UCLA didn’t get a shot until there was less than 6 minutes left. Hopefully Rutgers will continue to play well in the second half. Interesting to see what adjustments UCLA makes.

Heartbreaking loss. Rutgers outplayed UCLA, had way more chances, and then UCLA scores after the ball gets deflected at midfield to a Bruin player, who was 1 on 3 running down the middle, and she fired the ball past Bodmer from 25 yards out as Bodmer was retreating from the sudden turnover.

So that’s two home conference losses in a row, both heartbreakers.

Once the kid Calvert realizes she doesn't have to do it all, she going to be very good. Fun to watch. Tough loss, better team for much of it.
Very talented with the ball. Needs to be more aware both passing and shooting. Its multiple times per game she is missing obvious passing opportunities and shooting directly into defenders. Indictment on the coaching staff that they haven’t been able to coach these habits out of her. She has a bright future, as long as this staff isn’t around long enough to ruin her development.

We completely dominated the 2nd half

Horrendous goal...so many mistakes

Lots of talent but we were just so disorganized and clueless in the final 3rd...it's frustrating

Some of these youngsters are really really good
That’s all about coaching or shall we say lack of coaching

Yup. First I've seen her/the team play. Takes a bit to remove bad habits from freshman, you don't want her to lose that confidence while making her better.
While I think the girls' up top show some ability, wish there was some more speed there to go with some decent hold up play.

Her decision making is light years better than the players around her.

We have not had good speed up top since Amirah Ali

Thats a bold claim for a player with 30 shots attempted and only 5 have ended up on goal, and thats not even taking passing into account. Again, she is very talented, but far from a finished product. The lack of experience and adaptation to the college game flashes just as much as her skill, which is normal for a young player. Like I said before, once she gets some real collegiate coaching to guide her she’ll be set.

Agreed. Also wish the speedsters had more opportunities to put their athleticism to use, but MON would rather park the bus and have them drop to their own 18 to do the back lines job for them. There have been some poor moments/games for the attacking third, but the more you watch this team, the more you see a majority of these issues stem from not really having any sort of plan of attack offensively, so I can’t really blame the players for that.

my point was relative to her teammates

mcglinn is lost out there...lost. she doesnt even look to pass, and when she does it's off the mark by miles

Dunne has a lot of ability, but also makes the wrong decision virtually every time

Baran has regressed and hasnt gained the fitness needed to align with her skillset.

this team is coached poorly...I've been saying that for YEARS

but 3 is the best player on the field...technically and soccer IQ wise by MILES

the closest to her is Tsokos (sp)? 77. and 9 has a lot of potential as well.

I mean who could have seen another poor season coming, it totally came out of nowhere! I have no words for you, coach mike, just get out.
I mean, who could’ve seen another match blown in the last five or so minutes? It’s only happened about 20 times or so in the last 10 years.

Knights1998 absolute ball knower. Barely anyone on the team knows that to do when they get the ball. They either hoof a long ball or pass it backwards until they concede possession. It so clearly a coaching and recruitment issue but nothing will change as long as MON is at the wheel.

Based on a very quick search - O'Neil's base salary is close to $250K (obviously he makes more via PDA and other stuff). This puts him near or at the top of all B1G women's soccer head coaches.

The point is, how can RU go year after year with such lousy coaching when they clearly are paying a salary that could draw in someone elite?

This disaster that they call an offense was partly covered up by some extraordinary players (like Ali and Tiernan).

RB Julia Joseph (#2) has also been terrific, probably our best back overall (and that includes Tsokos, who sometimes gets too enamored with her own dribbling and ends up losing the ball).

Calvert (#3) is our best player hands down, but yeah, she needs to work on her decision-making in the attacking third. Too many attempted shots from 25+ yards out.

Valente (#9) has been good too dribbling from the back to the front, but she also seems to get indecisive and make the wrong choice when she gets near or into the box. Several times this year, she has dribbled into the attacking third, and would have a wide open look from the top of the box, but instead of shooting, she tries to make the perfect pass. As they used to say on the NY Rangers telecasts 40 years ago about defenseman Barry Beck -- "Shoot the puck, Barry, shoot the puck."

Baran has been solid on the right wing. She has that deftness that Riley Tiernan had to trick the back with sudden starts and stops, and her crosses are outstanding. It's just that there's rarely anybody filling in to receive the crosses...

MON has to stop with the multiple player substitutions in the second half. We don't need to see 5, 13, 24, 57, or 92, almost EVER, but certainly not in the last 20-25 minutes of the 2nd half. And for god's sake, please stop starting McGlinn -- she missed yet another good look last night and didn't even shoot the ball on frame. (She's fast and does a great job CREATING opportunities, but rarely actually cashes in on them). Russomanno should be getting most of the minutes at the wing opposite Baran.

It is way too deep into the season to be emptying the bench at the end of the half. Thornton, Russomanno, Stiles have outplayed and deserve to start over Dunne, McGlinn, and Hippeli. No if ands or buts about it, its very clear cut and dry at this point of the season. Outside of them, I’m not sure if anyone on the bench has done anything to warrant substantial minutes, especially in crucial moments in the second half against a ranked opponent!

I felt like I was dreaming watching the combination leading up to that goal against Purdue. Might be the only time all year we see them chain that many passes together, let alone score from it!

Calvert is very skilled but a ball hog at this point.

Baran is our best goal scorer but doesn't see the ball enough. Mike also yanks her out every game with close to 20 min left in the 1st half.
Same substitution patterns every game. Give Barron a 5 or, at most, 10 min break in the 2nd half, otherwise play her the whole game.

NO 25, Hipple I believe, is pretty rough IMO.

McGlinn clearly has trouble finishing.

Still can't consistently deliver good corner kicks.

There is enough talent on this team to win if handled correctly.

Don't think anyone disagrees here, she was the most talented, problem is, right now, she plays a little like she knows it and trusts herself to try somethings over trusting her team mates. As that trust comes, she'll be even better.

He has one year left on his contract and his buyout is $215,000 so it is very doable to get rid of him after this year

Not sure I if I agree about Hippelli and Stiles. Frankly, they’re both a bit shaky. Stiles is giving early Kassidy Banks vibes the way she seems indecisive with the ball.

Drives me nuts that Baran is subbed out so much. MON should stop subbing in Emma Johns, who is a turnover machine, and give those minutes to Baran.

Agree and disagree with some of these takes. Look at the actual stats.
Dunne has potential but should be a sub and needs more development- Not a finisher currently. McGlinn has looked good historically but has struggled the past few games. Not really sure what’s going on there? Someone said 92 provides nothing the other day which is completely inaccurate. She literally leads the roster in per minute impact despite having some of the lowest minutes on offense. I would argue that Russomanno, Baran, and Johns should be up top. Three players with speed, IQ, accuracy, and experience. Calvert in the mid obviously but they desperately need to develop her to start making smart passes to the forwards versus just wasting the opportunities she’s so good at creating. They’re wasting her talent otherwise.
I’d argue that Thornton is talented and has shown progress over the other starters yet has been relegated to being a sub. Why?
Bottom line, lots of actual talent on this offense. Yet he is currently starting a freshman up top with a stat line that looks worse than some of the teams defenders.. as in 0 actual production despite having some of the highest offensive minutes.

Makes no sense. looking at the numbers, this team doesn’t have an issue with number of opportunities. It’s a conversion issue and the efficient players are on the bench for much of the game. Maybe try putting your most effective weapons on the field at the same time and let them build some chemistry. That seems like an obvious move that hasn’t been made which is beyond me.
Clearly MON is a defensive minded coach and either has no clue how to put together a cohesive offensive unit or doesn’t prioritize it… despite having the talent available. Instead it’s just a lot of disconnected individual efforts. That just doesn’t hold up at this level of play.

Johns should be a 9 and on the field WITH Baran. Agree they shouldn’t be swapped though. Baran and Calvert should be on as much as possible. Thornton keeps getting better. Lots of promise. Calvert is exciting but has to start making smart passes instead of trying to carry the offense herself. Could be incredibly dangerous making some real plays.
