The lowest price I ever remember is 16 cents/gallon in Johnson City, Tn. A gas war was in JC was taking place.

I can't remember the exact price. But I do recall that it was in the 20 cent region in the early 1970s in Aiken.
The average national price today is $4.4918/gallon. In South Carolina the average is 4.138. In North Carolina it is $4.16.
I expect the national average to go to at least $5.00/gallon in the next 5 or so weeks. And I would not rule out $6.00/gallon in that timeframe.

.19 in downtown Columbia, and it was due to a “gas war” between two stations. Early 1960.
I don't remember the exact price either but I was in HS (this would have been in the '90 - '91 timeframe) and I could go into the BP station on Main St. in Anderson (no pay at the pump then), buy $5 worth of gas, and drive the rest of the week on that. And I was driving a Corvette!
I wasn't really paying attention to the cost in my earlier years of driving, but I recall it being .89/gal in August, 1998 in GA, and 1.47/gal in Novato, CA later that same month.

I can remember $0.25 per gallon. We would all chip in .25, get a dollars worth of gas and cruise around that night.

I remember my dad saying it was a gas war late 60’s early 70’s headed to the mountains in Chesnee, low .20 cents. Seems around Spartanburg always had better gas prices.
I worked at a service station when I was in high school and regular was about 20-22 a gallon in 65-66.
I am not sure but I do remember regularly getting $5 worth of gas. That was really all I needed or my dad or my grandpa needed to go to work for a week.
There was also a small station about 5 miles from my house growing up that had an older employee that would always pump your gas for you- you'd just pull up and say "filler up" or "I want $5 worth" and he'd give you a finger wave and do it. They always charged about 2-3 cents more per gallon that the station in town 2 miles away but it was easily worth it.
He'd also check your oil for you and add a quart if needed. They even had an RC and Nehi grape and orange crush old style cooler right inside the front door.
if the owner or his wife knew you, you could even say "charge it" and they'd write it down in a small little book they kept at the front counter. On payday, that's when people would come in and pay. But during the week, people would "charge" a soda or two or maybe a honeybun or a pack of crackers.
Lots of the women would charge things- and their husbands would come in on payday and pay the bill. I am not talking about big bills- like $5 or $10.

I am paying $5.59 a gallon for premium in Atlanta. Georgia has a .$50 cents a gallon state gas tax which makes it worse here. I had always wanted a diesel car, but now I am glad I don’t have one. I am in LA this weekend, regular gas is $8 a gallon here, crazy!
About $.25 cents a Gallon.....Cheaper if you had a Clemson Graduate pump it....don't know why.

Gas stations had service attendants in those days. You didn't have to get out of your car. I can still remember the ding ding when you drove over the rubber hose as you pulled in.
When we were small children, we would get out of the car and jump on the hoses to hear the dings.
About .45 a gallon in the late '70s. Getting a dollar's worth actually meant you could get somewhere. I was on my way home late one night in my mother's car and knew I didn't have enough gas to make it. I pulled into a convenience store and put .47 worth of gas in the car, that was all the money I had. I made it home no problem. It went to $1 a gallon shortly thereafter and people lost their minds. People were trading in 2 yr old full size cars for Chevettes and Vegas and dealers were giving them $500 trade in allowances on cars they had paid $6-8000 for two years earlier.
We had a 1964 Oldsmobile 88 and a 1962 Malibu sport when I started driving in 1968. Both got about 10 mpg. We lived close to downtown Columbia and most of my friends lived in Forest Acres. $2 of gas would get me out to Forest Lake, drive around a bit, and get me home.
People today have no idea how bad the gas mileage was on cars in the '60s and '70s. Those cool muscle cars with the big V8 engines got around 8 or 9 mpg in the city and 11 or 12 on the highway. A HS friend's mother drove a giant '74 or so Ford station wagon with the 460 V8, it got 6 mpg in the city. My father had a '77 Lincoln Town Car with the 460 engine. It got 7 mpg in town and around 11 on the highway. It had a 26 gallon fuel tank, so he could not go 200 miles on a full tank in town.
