If we are having a serious discussion, I was not sold on Campbell as being "the guy to get PSU over the hump".
He won 64% of his games at Toledo. He went to Iowa State and, with more resources than Toledo, against more difficult competition, he won 58% of his games. He comes to PSU with even more resources and even tougher competition.....and let's see what he does.
If Krafts' stated goal was to win NCs, then I don't think Campbell is the guy. If he just wanted someone to keep things status quo, then Campbell may be fine.
Campbell, Franklin, O'Brien and Joe (because he and I are on a first name basis), all have the same problem. It ranges from committment of those resources to obtaining more - and everything in between. And the real problem that these guys all have/had is that the juggernaut named Ohio State is in their backyard. Now add in Oregon, Indiana and Michigan, and the road gets tougher to get "over the hump".
That said, he is the coach and I support him and the team and want them to win. And I agree with your position that he was the only coach truly available. The Pa coal regions are a non starter - that area is dead on a number of levels and doesn't help PSU.
