After Vanderzee’s catch, TV caught Kirk raising a finger to an official as if signaling “1” for PAT. Moments later the head ref announced the game was over. Did Kirk not realize Iowa had won with a 6-point touchdown and time expired, up by 1, and no opportunity for Michigan to get the ball?

Who knows... one flaw KF has always had was below average clock management. Hell the Cap One bowl was complete clusterf* of game management that turned into one of the most improbable plays in Iowa history.

I thought they were masterful managing the clock in last 3 minutes.

in years past, the refs would make the team scoring at the buzzer attempt the XP, ONLY IF it could change the outcome...in this case it could...bobbled snap or blocked XP returned for 2-pts by Mich changes the winner. Maybe rule has changed giving the scoring team the option to do so
That was the rule and I’m not sure if/when it changed. I had not seen discussed until now.
When seven got six vs MSU (Stanzi to McNutt), Iowa had to run the PAT because one or two points could have changed the outcome. As it could have Saturday.
If Iowa was forced to run the PAT Saturday, I hoped to hell they wouldn’t go for one. You line up for the two point conversion, snap it, and take an instant knee in victory formation. I laughed when the commentator said “Iowa is going for one here”.

That's what I thought. And I swear that was mentioned in a game I was watching this very season. Honestly I just thought they kicked it or knee'd it and in the ensuing flurry of excitement and bouncing test messages I just missed it lol.

And the best way to not screw up that extra point attempt is to take a knee in punt formation with all ten other players in tight blocking formation.
It was obviously him confirming with the refs that the customary Michigan Stadium one extra second was going to be added to the clock.
This is what I have always thought. I was actually surprised they weren’t required to play out the extra point.
It used to be that even in the case when you scored a game-winning TD, you HAD to snap the ball for a PAT attempt. But the rule apparently was changed recently in light of the fact that no one would actually kick the ball with the lead. They'd just kneel down, making the PAT attempt moot. At least that's one explanation.
My understanding is that "changing the outcome of the game" only applies to the team that scored. In other words, if Michigan had kicked the extra point on their last TD to make it 20-14 and then Iowa scored at the end with no time left, they could obviously kick because it would change the outcome in their favor. But because it was 19-14 and our TD made it 20-19, we didn't have to kick because our XP wouldn't have changed the outcome for us. Doesn't matter in regards to the defensive team. I'm pretty sure that's been the rule in college football for forever. In the NFL, I believe that rule changed in like 2018 or 2019 to not force the team to kick the XP.
If you rewatch the game, watch when Ostrenga goes down on that next to last play (the tip to himself). There's clearly 3 seconds left when the refs blow their whistle, but the clock operator allowed it to go down to 2 seconds. Moot point now, but had the Michigan guy not gotten injured, we would have been forced to immediately run a play rather than spike (since there must be 3 seconds to spike). Always something clock related at that effing stadium.
Truth. Penn st had to do this back 17’. Took a knee then their dbag qb punted the ball into the stands. Rule changed in last few years.

Yes, and there apparently was an exception, which was the losing team just walking off the field (like LSU in the Capital One Bowl).
I remember the bowl game with Missouri and after Iowa scored the refs said Iowa had to try the extra point, but Iowa jus snapped the ball and took a knee instead. I don't remember all of the details on why that was.
And how exciting would that have been? Iowa players amped up celebrating the fact they defeated hated USCUM in their own “Big House” with no time left, delivering karma and Justice to WMU, defending against pissed off blues brothers trying to do everything dirty to rip the ball away. I mean Jimmy Rogers’ Cyclowns on steroids!
I'd have to find the video but he may have also just been acknowledging he only needed one foot in (really he got both) before it was confirmed.
Iowa won by five for that game so a PAT was moot. The PAT wouldn’t have changed the outcome.
