It was an incredibly bad performance by Becht. That is unacceptable for a 5th year starter. By the radio broadcast, it sounded like he played rattled the whole game. The play calling by Mouser (OC) didn't help. As a few of us have discussed in this thread, the OC should had Becht rolling out after he was noted to be struggling with throwing over the Wisky DL. OC play calling = F in that game.

I think the experience (number of years played) is one of the most overrated barometers of future success in college football. It’s the level of improvement and quality that counts way more than the number of years played. As an example, Allar played a lot of college football over his PSU career but his development was a major disappointment. So far, Becht has looked a level below what Penn State needs at the position.

  • How badly did PSU miss Koby Howard? Nobody else has that athleticism.
  • I was disappointed that we didn't see more of Zay Robinson in the slot. I don't know how he looks in practice but we need a playmaker and it seems that he was our best chance.
  • Becht was horrible. 7-18, 114 yds, 0 TD, 1 INT. He didn't get a lot of help but he was missing wide open guys in the first half when he had time.
  • Becht ran in a TD with an empty backfield and he also converted a big 3rd down with his feet (19 yds). That said he's not nearly as mobile as Allar and he wasn't the most mobile QB.
  • The OL was weak and we rotated too many RBs. The I formation with extra TEs in the red zone has been a disaster even against weaker teams.
  • Brahmer and Eskildsen might be fast but they haven't shown my any toughness. PSU needs somebody who can catch a poor pass or outfight defenders for 50/50 balls.
  • I couldn't tell how poorly Riker and Rapp played. Maybe they weren't 100%. I'll have to see the film.
  • I disagree with posters who said Campbell was too conservative at the end of the half. Wisconsin just scored to make it 17-7 and Becht nearly threw an INT. We needed to get to halftime and try to make adjustments.
  • I disagree with fans who thought the announcers were biased. It's their job to report the action but it's also their job to keep the audience interested.
  • Tyce averaged 42 yds per punt with no returns. He wasn't good but he isn't why we lost.

Playcalling:
  • I defended the playcalling at the end of the half but...
  • IMO the worst playcalling was when PSU had the ball with 8 minutes to go and leading 20-10. I hate overly conservative playcalling as much as anybody but the offense was doing nothing. We could have taken 3 minutes off the clock but instead we threw twice and got tackled for a loss. Only 1 minute off the clock.
  • You could also pick the wasted TO on 4th and 1 and we decided to punt anyway.
  • More bad playcalling was what I warned about all week. Our blitz doesn't get home so don't bring the house and leave gaps in the defense. We let Dupree escape and convert a first down with 20 yds to go. Let them have 5 or 6, yds, just don't get beat on a big play. Same on the 72 yd pass that cost us the game. Why go for the pressure/sack? I'm sure there was a missed assignment but there should have been two safeties back there.
  • One more bad play call was after Wisconsin scored to cut the lead to 3. At that point the momentum had completely flipped. There was 3:31 remaining and Wisconsin had 3 TOs and the 2:00 TO. IMO it was obvious that we needed to get a few first downs and not punt it back to Wisconsin. 3 yd run up the middle and 3 yd pass to Brahmer at the LOS looks like Campbell was trying to run out the clock. WAY TOO EARLY! It reminded me of Franklin saying he went by "the book". The problem is "the book" doesn't know momentum.
Other:
  • Franklin, Grunk, & Reynolds are getting the last laugh tonight.
  • Worst prediction of the night: Lando said we win even if we don't score for the rest of the game. I posted "next score wins" when it was still 20-10. You could just see the momentum swing.
  • The little graphic at the top of the screen says PSU has a 60% chance to beat NW on the road next week. Really?
Final Stats:
  • Total yds 233-355
  • First Downs 12-18
  • As Joe would say we got our ears kicked in
Allar more mobile than Becht? I don't think so. I think we need to run Becht more to add a dimension to this dismal attack.

The TE threw a forearm at the initial DB in coverage and pushed off. That is why he was so open. A clear OPI that wasn’t called but we should have never been in that position!
Was watching it happen. Saw the ref throw the flag and as the guy was running for the TD I said to my son "dont worry, it's coming back. " Couldn't belive they called the penalty on the guy that got put on his ***.

If what we saw last night is what we really are for this season, how does Campbell break through with better recruits (including the portal)? How do we get better?
There was a CFB writer who, when ranking yesterday's performance by the Lions, noted that Campbell was hired after the early National Signing Day (which is by far the most important NSD), at which point PSU had THE worst recruiting class in Power 4 football. Understandably so. How do you recruit without a head coach in place?! How do you even manage the Transfer Portal, which has become increasingly critical? Plus, Franklin took some solid players with him when he went to VA Tech. So this writer said that he is gonna give Campbell incompletes for pretty much this entire season, as he wants to see what he can do with a full recruiting off season under his belt.

I don't want to be an apologist for Matt Campbell. I think that writer is being a tad charitable. PSU is not a run of the mill program. There are still a lot of very talented players on the roster. The Lions should at least win 8 or so games. I sure hope they bounce back, and quickly. If Becht cannot raise the level of his play, Campbell needs to give him the hook.

Really? Great. Do you have a link to that footage? I know it won't make a difference at this point, but I would nonetheless like to see if for myself.

Not sure this reply is appropriate here. I guess I'm hitting on several things, none of these are meant to be in disagreement with anything you typed.

What happens next is most important. The tentative, conservative approach failed miserably. the 17-0 lead was fool's gold. A good punt return, a pick-6, and near pick-6. Team did not respond well to adversity and the defense played the fourth quarter incredibly soft. Don't let Wisconsin beat you twice.

Campbell isn't going anywhere. He isn't getting fired. I'm interested in how he responds, how the team responds. Hopefully, the Big XII, Iowa State East stuff stops soon and Penn State moves forward. Hopefully, this is a tough week of practice with accountability and responsibility, from the head coach through the staff and onto the players. He doesn't have to say in a press conference, behind close doors is fine.

I'm by no means making any snap judgments, but it concerns me that Matt Campbell said he thought Rocco Becht played a good game.

He was 12-29 for 114 yards and a pick.

If that's a "good game" what does a "bad game" look like?

I understand that there's no need to bury a kid (even a 5th year QB) after a poor performance, but there's a dramatic difference between "not burying" and "divorced from reality".

If a player has a bad game, you don't need to pretend he had a good game. You can be lucid and honest without throwing someone under the bus:

"Coach, how do you think your quarterback played today?"

"We had a number of problems on offense. I think Rocco fought hard, and tried to make plays, and obviously, we didn't execute the way we wanted to. We have a short week and then we're on the road at Northwestern on Friday, so we'll be looking at the game film, and see what we can do to make necessary adjustments and have Rocco and the team ready to go for Friday so we can get back in the W-column."

The problem with insisting a player had a good game when they didn't is the fans don't know whether you're insulting their intelligence, or you're off your rocker.

Don't gaslight, Matt. We all saw him go 12-29 and throw a bunch of horrible passes that weren't even close to being on target. Waving your hand and saying, "These aren't the droids you're looking for," doesn't work on (most of) us.

I think this is 10000% spot on. What happens next is crucial. go into NW and go up 10 then turtle again, we're in trouble. go into NW and go up 10 and pour it on to win by 25-30, then clearly the lesson was learned.

yeah I wish people would look at this whole situation pragmatically. sure, it's a light schedule, but dudeman came into the job AFTER national signing day with 1 recruit committed, and his predecessor cleaned the cupboard. Not to mention at that point, most of the xfr portal was accounted for and bare bones. Yeah he brought a bunch from ISU with him, but it's still ISU, not to mention you have 3 LARGE pools of players that have to gel together (PSU, ISU, portal). You can't just take them to Gettysburg, wake them up early for a run and stop in a graveyard with a "if we dont' come together" speech and expect a switch to flip. To expect him, even with a light schedule, to come in and only lose 1 or 2 games??? not even REMOTELY reasonable.

To me PSU was up 17-0... if they could run the ball at all they walk away with an easy win. The inability to create a rushing attack reared its head and Wisconsin figured out how to stop Rocco or make him ineffective. Until this team and coaching staff figure out how to effectively run the ball this team will struggle to put teams away and allow them back into games.

Let's see how he performs against Pitt, which will be the best defense that he will have faced this season by far; he won't be playing against VMI on Friday. Maybe after Firday's game, you'll change your tune a little bit, or maybe you'll be right.

And by the way, unless I'm mistaken, the wins went away in 2025 under Franklin, who also had a lovely losing season in 2020 and a 7-6 season in 2021 as well as a beautiful 9-4 season in 2018 with a very talented team, but we conveniently can forget about all of those wonderful times.

It was the right call.

#31, Neal, comes over in man coverage and tries to grab/tackle him as he is running his route.
Neal is not good in coverage, FWIW, this year and at ISU.

Watching the film I can tell you Donkoh and Coleman had bad games including in pass protection. Donkoh has only been here for 10.years and still stinks. The line had a bad day and if this the level of oline play we get we are screwed.

Sure. If you conveniently omit the part where the TE is running his route, cutting outside of Neal, and Neal jumps out in front of him (a defensive holding penalty... the rule is "defensive holding", but it is really impeding the receiver)

Play in question is at the 4:28 mark of video:

The receiver has the right to run his route. Neal needed to turn his hips and run with him - but he just jumped in front of him. Clear defensive penalty.

How did Grunk play against Indiana?
Speaking of forgetting....how many 10+ win seasons? Top 10 finishes?
Until Campbell wins 10+ games, makes the playoffs and beats Ohio State and or Oregon it is a hard sell to claim PSU is better off with him.
It simply doesn't matter what Grunk or Franklin do at VT.
Is PSU recruiting better under Campbell?
Remember, we are watching excellence at the highest level. No excuses. Based on the performance against Wisconsin, it's probably not the best time to disparage Franklin.

Why would he want to let that much bigger and stronger TE lock up with him?
He's gonna lose that every time

The official definition of offensive pass interference, from the NCAA rule book, is as follows:

“Offensive pass interference is contact by a Team A player beyond the neutral zone that interferes with a Team B player during a legal forward pass play in which the forward pass crosses the neutral zone. It is the responsibility of the offensive player to avoid the opponents.”

Boom. Cut and dry. Harris completely trucks Neal in the open field and makes no effort to get around him. That’s it, right?

Campbell’s plan all along. Diabolical.
This is going to be a brutal season. The more I’m thinking about it…there is no way they’re beating Northwestern. Not after what we just saw, and what we saw from Northwestern vs Colorado and Indiana. I wouldn’t rule out a blowout win for the Wildcats.
