I thoought might get closer to the top 25, but we have not been good for so long we started at 40+.
Looks like Nebraska is postioned perfectly for that bowl game in Detroit in mid December.

NU defense - 5th in the nation in yds allowed, 10th in pts allowed.
NU offense - 20th in yards per game, 16th in ppg.
They have done what they were supposed to do with the competition they had. The starters on both sides of the football have played a lot of football. They are much more likely to play the next play and just worry about the next game as opposed to start thinking they are world beaters when they have a little success.
This is a first go around for this defense with these players I suspect that the players will improve every game as they become more familiar with what they can do within the defense. Whittington has a really good motor and Nwaneri is showing signs of what we hoped he could be. It would be nice this year to see them put away the teams that they are supposed to beat. They did that against MSU on the road.

The polls are a joke and are heavily biased toward the SEC because ESPN blows them every weekend.
I saw a stat where Tennessee hasn't beaten an FBS opponent that finished with a winning record since November 30, 2024. They spent the entire season ranked last year.

5-0 Nebraska should always be ranked, and we will if we take care of business against Maryland.
If 3-1 Missouri and 3-1 Tennessee (two teams that have won nothing of note since 2024 at the latest) stay ranked, Nebraska belongs in the convo as well.
Time and time again we have feasted on soft *** early season schedule and fall apart in November. There is no reason to think we won't again. Fortunately we have every opportunity to prove we are a good team.

I agree with this. Any semblance of not regressing involved a 5-0 start. And while we have covered spreads at 4-0, that doesn’t mean anything. I haven’t seen line dominance. The meat of the schedule, the part that matters, is the last 7 games.
MSU/Maryland was supposed to be an early read but has been unexpectedly rendered suspect. MSU due to crazy in-game injuries, and Maryland due to WTF against UCLA. Even at 5-0, there is less meaning to that than I was meagerly imagining in July.
So, the meaningful part of the season really does begin with Indiana. And we haven’t done well in the latter half of season for some time. But, maybe this year.

They snuck UCLA in at 23 ahead of their marquee game against Oregon when they got 2 B1G wins under their belt.
They'll shuffle pieces to ensure Nebraska is ranked before Indiana, after which we will be brought down to size and likely remain unranked for the rest of the season.
I thought we should have made the top 25 this week. There is a lot of bias towards certain 1 loss teams already.
A loss to Indiana doesn't mean we would get booted out of the top 25.. not if it was a close game.. Anyway, I wanted us to be there for 2 weeks before the Indiana game, but Nebraska's lost decade with Scott Frost and Mike Riley has definitely soured people's opinions, and as I look at our coaching staff, I'm reminded that this year is an anomaly because of a highly competitive QB.
I was going to mention UCLA too. They went 3-9 last year and they’ve won 4 games against bad teams this year. How are they ranked and were not
5-0 is tough to ignore. You’re not wrong about Maryland but voters are going to look pretty stupid if an unranked 5-0 team beats Indiana. If we beat Maryland, we’ll be ranked.
Im guessing we get ranked so the TV people can promote a game between “ranked” teams. Huskers are showing progress, but not enough IMO to be ranked.
It is about perception and our (Rhule's too) history.
1. We still have not won a game we weren't favored in
2. Not until we beat a good team (Indiana, Oregon, Ohio State etc... should they believe otherwise about this team.
3. How quickly this fan base forgets the previous year! Do you forget last year we were 5-1 and just beat Michigan State 38-27... How'd that Minnesota game turn out?

We aren't getting ranked for beating Maryland. Indiana will be our measuring stick. We could lose and jump into the top 25 at 5-1 if it's a game

And the AP is the poll to use, not ESPN or some Coaches poll where some staffer does a ranking.
