Here is Rick Beato talking about it. The NYT guys are unbelievably smug. There is a disconnect in this country between people running elite institutions and regular people and these NYT people exemplify it, although there are many other examples too.

I’d have GOT and Mad Men at the top, with Breaking Bad, Atlanta, True Detective S1, Watchmen, Deadwood, Community (not even on the list?!), Justified, and maybe Schitt’s Creek or Arrested Development (toss up) to round out the top ten.
Agree with got with breaking bad. Now I have never seen mad men. Guess I should? Does it progress and build over time with the characters over the years or is it random episodes. That is why I liked got and breaking bad.

There’s progress in Mad Men characters over the years, yes. I liked it okay.

It was #78
My bust. Had it tee’d up for Diff’rent Strokes, then realized it was since 2000 so I could not delete the post and had to throw something in there. Can we bring back the delete button?

The main takeaway I have from this list is that I really didn't watch a lot of TV. I've hardly seen any of these shows. Or maybe my tastes are just far too pedestrian/bad, as I admit to liking reality TV game show types of series when I have the time to relax and watch some TV.

Personally, I'd put True Detective Season 1 as #1.
Dexter is on the list, but at 88, and I'd probably have it top 10.
Stranger Things holds a special place with me, since it's one show our entire family watched together throughout its entire run.
Mad Men was very good, but I didn't feel it was an all-timer.
Same with Breaking Bad. I didn't even finish it - I got bored after 2 or 3 seasons.
GoT was great - a top 10 contender.
Peaky Blinders was quite entertaining, but I wouldn't call it "great."
Severance is absolute trash.

Community was maybe the last network comedy before the PC police shut everything down (good news is streaming shows like Tires and HBO’s Righteous Gemstones don’t give a sh*t about PC) - had an amazing cast and could dip into meta comedy without effort. That Allison Brie was also on Mad Men really gives this scene some extra juice. And they did stuff like this all the time. Crime it’s not on this list.

It's on the list.

Which means it will lean a certain way lol
That was my thought too. but The Shield was very very good, and we love Ted Lasso. But no credit to shows that dominate TV like NCIS or formerly Blue Bloods. I also think down the road that the new Matlock will be recognized. Kathy Bates is amazing.

Basically the only thing you can do is wipe out your post and post “Delete.” 🤷🏻

The only weak part is one of the central themes of season 5 (last season). Was a little silly, but it ended well - unlike GoT which never regained its stride.

Season 4 of the Wire is one of the best, but most devastating, seasons of TV you will ever watch.

My personal ranking of the seasons: 4,3,2,1,5 - the first 4 are nip and tuck.

I WANT to watch the Americans, but can’t get rolling on it. Have started and stopped 3 times. It has everything I should like - if that makes sense (set in time period I grew up in, centered around the US-USSR rivalry which governed everything in global politics then, great cast, etc). Just can’t get fully invested
I agree on season 4 of The Wire. Having watched the entire series several times, I now think Season 2 is the most underrated

Yeah, the way McNulty screws over Dornan after getting screwed over by Dornan is priceless.

You are always great with travel inputs... Take this advice, please. The Wire is the only show I've gone back to watch in its entirety 2+ times. In my opinion it's neck n neck with BB as best ever.
The Wire brings you a myriad of interesting characters in really compelling scenes. Dornan calling out McNulty for blaming himself for Kima getting shot. The Robert’s Rules of Order scene, “You’re taking notes on a ******* criminal conspiracy?” Deangelo thinking that Wee Bey invited him over to his apartment so as to kill him only to find out Bey wants him to feed his fish while he’s gone. The F scene with Bunk and Jimmy. “Where’s Wallace, String? Where’s Wallace?” Omar whistling A Huntin’ We Will Go. Every scene with Slim Charles, “That was for Joe.” Every scene with Bodie. Snoop buying the nail gun at Home Depot, good grief. Snoop, knowing she was going to die, asking “How do I look?”

IMHO The Wire is Homicide Life on the Streets uncensored and darker. Schitts Creek is so unfunny. It tried to be cute, but was so stupid and contrived that I forgot to laugh.

I didn’t like Bodie most of my first watch and then he became one of my favorite characters - especially the fantastic scene with him and McNulty at the cemetery. Here’s a great scene - first his hilarious anger at being stuck on an off-brand corner and then his back and forth with Cutty. Brilliant stuff by both of them

every episode of each season is just so rich... and season 2 was my least favorite but upon rewatch it is underrated. And then there is this scene...

Okay The Wire Boys, what do we think? I’d be shocked if Fincher does this but could be amazing if the OG showrunner is involved….

I'm always skeptical of the redux. The Deadwood movie was meh and the Peaky Blinders movie was absolutely tragic.

That said, David Simon did "We Own this City" not long ago on HBO with a number or The Wire alums and it was quite good. Underrated imo. So, maybe there is hope that this could be successful.

You still haven't watched the original have you?

Some thoughts on the overall list

BB and the Wire in the top 2 checks out, why don't I see the Sopranos? It should at least be top5.
Succession is good but overrated at 4.
I liked Chernobyl but don't get the hype. I would have thought more like 60's or 70's, not 19.
White Lotus at 21 overrated.
Deadwood underrated at 24
Better Call Saul underrated at 27
Peaky Blinders way underrated at 43
Love that I Think You Should Leave made the list
Chappelle's Show way underrated at 58
The Bear should be like True Detective and just have the first season or two. Sorry, but I hate what they did to that show.
It's Always Sunny underrated at 78
Halt and Catch Fire - nice to see it on the list

How about Shameless? Unless I missed, I thought it was great. Good cast and entertaining story lines.

Drug scene in the hood. Watched every minute of the Wire. I found it drawn out and painfully slow. Wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.

Everyone is entitled to their opinion. I just wonder why you didn't stop watching after one season......or less.

A friend of mine kept telling me it was the most ground breaking tv ever….. over and over he did. I was trusting the process that I would be rewarded. I was rewarded with fools gold.

Maybe the fact that I never lived in a ghetto and never wanted to live in a ghetto admiring thugs with drugs affected my impressions.

Soprano’s started in the 90’s I think - so they miss the cut. Halt and Catch Fire is top ten for me - I rewatch scenes from the show more than any other I think (Mad Men, GOT, Deadwood, Justified, Peaky Blinders and Silicon Valley up there too). Personally think BB is overrated at #1 - it’s very distinctly two shows - the one that ends when everyone thought they’d be cancelled, and then the second show that begins after that (so, seasons 1-4, then 5-6). Same thing happened with Hell on Wheels but they thought they’d get cancelled after two seasons. They ended season two as if they was it but then they got two or three more seasons and couldn’t recover from the bad decisions in S2.

French version of The Bureau is insanely good.

Sopranos was 99-07. Seems silly to omit a great show because it started 1 year before the 21st century.

Watch The Wire already!!

I don’t agree with Breaking Bad at #1, but it’s in the top ten for me. Bigger issue with White Lotus as high as it is. More later…

That list is financially discriminatory.

Most every listed show requires a paid subscription to a channel or streaming service.

What about OTA (over the air) shows?

Another obvious GREAT show that was overlooked - even by me. This show was as SoFla as Miami Vice and just as cool.

Cast was perfect and the writing and shooting were well done.
