Rising above expectations would mean they won. They lost to a USC looked totally uninspired throughout the game. Acclimation has nothing to do with it. QB gave them 14 pts and the D wasn't good enough most of the day.

I can’t help but laugh at this. Rutgers doesn’t attract high level established defensive players, because we don’t have budget, even when kids know who the DC is going to be. Kids like that go to Miami and Ohio State because they can pay them. I’m talking about the Akeem Mesidors, who helped Miami to the National Championship game, as a transfer from West Virginia.
This is like complaining about our inability to land a 5 ⭐️Quarterback. Sure it would be nice, but it’s never going to happen because these kids have better options. We were unable to land a high level established quarterback, despite the OC being in place for a number of years, and the last QB having a productive enough season to make the NFL, and having Korey Duff to throw to.
Most of the defensive transfers we got, committed when we did not have a DC. And if nothing else, it looks like they are going to contribute something.
We are #80 in Total Defense, which is a big improvement from where we were last year, which was #125. We are roughly where we hoped we’d be, which is incrementally improved. Offense has to stop turning the ball over, and then we’ll be set.
We didn’t try to land a clear starting QB. That wasn’t where we put our resources - right or wrong. We hedged our bet - brought in someone with starting experience but who was beatable - and gave Surace a chance. And by the way - Athan might not have beaten UMass in that game either. Lonergan made a lot of mistakes but it would’ve taken a career day from any QB to overcome the complete inability to run.
I don’t know what to tell you about the defense. Even UMass was able to land “some” transfers from power conferences. They have a lot less money than us. Our options were going to be very limited without a DC. Most kids want to know the style system they will be playing in. It’s common sense.
You cannot blame a 1-3 start on NIL when we had significantly more money to work with than 2 of the teams we lost to. It makes no sense at all. And then you contradict yourself by talking about how good USC’s defense is because they spent more on their players. We spent more than UMass and BC. Does that make our defense better than theirs??? Clearly not so why does it apply only for USC.

These threads are comical. In one thread he says our players suck. The next we are running the table after beating Howard.
A lot of those UMass P4 transfers weren't playing much or at all at their previous schools. They came cheap as a result. It's the perfect example of why coaching matters. Joe H. and his staff got them ready to play and function as cohesive units immediately.
At Rutgers, Al strangely claims that they need an "acclimation" period during the first few weeks of the regular season. That's a coaching issue because things are not getting done during the spring or training camp when 90% of the team was on campus in for the spring workouts. Ignoring that all roads lead back to Greg mishandling things from the DC hire, use of NIL, game preparation, etc. is foolish on his part. It's always someone else's fault but he forgets that there's a new sheriff in town who knows how real operations run and where the buck stops.
Suck can be a temporary state. Terry Shea and Chris Ash’s players would suck for 12 games. Greg Schiano’s Players get better during the course of the season, with a ton of work. #5 Bradlee Jones is twice the player he was at the beginning of the season. He is trusting his training and performing when the opportunity comes.
Just like in real life, you learn more from failure than success.
Again, Rutgers has NEVER landed a clear cut starting quarterback, because we’ve never had budget to do so . Darian Mensah, Heisman Candidate, is a clear cut starting quarterback, but Miami also paid in the neighborhood of $6M to $10M, to land him. We don’t have that kind of coin. Even Beau Pribula cost UVA roughly $2M. We’re paying our Qb a lot less. I can blame our 1-3 start on NIL, because with Beau Pribula, we’re 4-0. The guy we got is developing, and getting better with each game. Our fortunes are riding on his arm. He’s a work in progress. Similarly, with our defenders, they weren’t all ready to go Game 1. There was a lot of confusion and missed assignments. Now you look at them, and it’s like night and day. They are playing with a lot more confidence. This is due to their hard work. They watched film, they took corrections, and the end result is they got a lot better. Their improvement will be on display this Saturday.
That's not what it's called in the current reality we're living in. Losing by double digits at home as a 3 TD favorite to a team that was winless the previous season is not rising above expectations. It's called sh#tting the bed.

We could have extended training camp by 50%, and the issues still would not have been sorted.

Rutgers players vs UMass players and BC players illuminated the issues because both sides of the Rutgers line needed to get better. And they did vs USC. This is why Needham was moved inside and is doing a lot better. The return of Walker, Abram Wright and Kaj Sanders has helped a lot on the defensive side of the ball. The kids from Drake and similar watched film, took corrections, and consequently are playing a lot better. This is why we have a great opportunity to beat Indiana.
Irrelevant. Kids all over America are overpaid. How the talent plays or is coached is what counts, not how much it was paid.

Like UMass did when they not only covered the 29.5 point spread against us, but ***** slapped our players and coaches with a 16 point outright win.

You do realize the OL was WILDLY unprepared for the UMass game and had that not been the case we’d likely be 3-1 instead of 1-3 right now. The QB play hasn’t been good but it was a secondary problem in the first game. It wasn’t until it became clear that we couldn’t run the ball that everything fell apart.
Not sure 4 TO's out of the position are secondary, Id call it even w poor line play and pathetic defense. There was no one issue that led the way.
I say there was. We were cruising along until the rush got stuffed over and over starting with drive two. Everyone, including Lonergan was caught completely by surprise because it’s was a team that hadn’t won a game in years getting pressure on him every play from there on. At one point in the game, he flat out panicked from it, no doubt, but that didn’t have to happen. The ones later in the game when things were blowing up never would’ve happened if we weren’t desperate.
Again - you’d have to go back really really far to find a game where we only rushed for 30 yards. That’s horrible.

Cruising along is a stretch. One scripted series - where our first four rushes went for 5 yards each, then interception on next drive and fumble on next and team is down by the final margin basically. Whole team went in the tank. OL was awful, so was every other unit.
No - the turning point of the game was the punt series your missing in between. We got stuffed twice in a row for negative yardage and then threw incomplete with a blitz in Lonergan’s face. Joe then knew the recipe to stop us.
We ran for 20 yards mixed in with the passes on the first drive of the game. 10 net yards the rest of the game. We played more additional series (11) than accumulated net rush yards. You cannot move the chains that way (less than a yard on the ground each series). It’s absolutely a recipe for a QB to panic and make mistakes. As I said - AK would’ve struggled too.
I’ll add - BC stunk last year but Lonergan’s stats were what they were and it’s not like he was a walking pick machine last season.
We did not have the optimal personnel on the OL.
Vigna at LT is key. Needham is a much better fit at Guard. We will run the ball better against Indiana than we did against UMass.

something similar happened against New Hampshire years ago. OC was Chip Kelly. UMass OC is very good, and will be a HC down the line.
