Wow! Hope he has a successful recovery and gets a good education because looks like his football career is over.

Agree and would definitely choose life over a sport .. has to be the farthest thing on his mind … hopefully he recovers quickly and fully

At least he knows and didn't just drop dead from it before finding out
That pretty much describes what happened to my brother. He wasn't feeling good for a little while. Assumed it was a bug like any 20 year old. The delay in treatment probably killed him. Lots of seemingly healthy young people have dropped dead on a field.

Like me, this guy got a heart. God bless him.

Good questions. Going from learning you need a heart transplant to having surgery in only 3 days? That can sometimes be a multi-year process (if you survive that long).
Need plays a big part. If you survived several years you weren't listed as 1 which is the top of the list. At 1 you're very near death and often on mechanical assistance to keep you alive. That was me. Sometimes it's simply luck. Someone dies, they're a match for you, and there isn't anyone above you that can take it.

Who makes that decision?
There's actually a national registry that all donor hearts are supposed to run through for match, location, and need. Ultimately at a local level a decision is made, typically by the heart failure / transplant team of whatever medical institution you are listed at.
