but they have to be getting close.

I think the buyout is around $40 million (and presumably they would end up on the hook for nearly all of it - given what has transpired)
They have "passed the hat" down there before - I think to can Taggart. But that's a big chunk of change for an ACC program to burn, and a lot to expect "boosters" to raise.

It never ceases to amaze how willingly these (complete idiot) college sports "leaders" go around laying these huge albatrosses around their own necks with these nearly forever guaranteed contracts.
And then cry like soiled babies that they need help in "saving" college sports.
(And PSU, of course, seems to do it not just with coaches, but with every empty suit running around w a 'VP" title on their business card)

It’s amazing that one of the big three Florida schools has such an unathletic team. In their glory years under Bowden, they had elite athletes all over the field.

At certain positions FSU has NFL caliber players.

I thought Norvell was a good hire, but there’s something very wrong at Free Shoes and Crab Legs U

Maybe they could use some of that research money? Oh wait , silly me the money in that pipe only flows one direction, from the football program to the university, what was I thinking.

It’s amazing that that once great program hasn’t won a game away from home since 2023. They’ll lose to Miami next week and then they have an off-week, so that’s when a decision may be made. FSU just has become a nondescript program this decade except for 2023.

Maybe Franklin's agent is talking to FSU. It's time to leverage a possible FSU coaching vacancy into a pay raise at VT.
That is the truth! Franklin was able to talk Sandy into an extension after the 2021 disaster season. He and Sexton are capable of anything.

Florida State didn't appreciate what they had under Jimbo Fisher 83-23. They insisted "We Deserve Better."
The only difference is that Fisher actually won a NC and a certain unnamed coach never even got to a NC game and only made one expanded playoffs despite having several teams that had enough talent to qualify, and also was the head coach for the better part of twelve seasons.

What was the condition of FSU when Fisher took over? FSU won NC's under BB in 1993 and 1999.
Jimbo won in 2013. The "difference is" that FSU was a top 10 program when Jimbo took over and PSU was in the midst of the second most draconian sanctions in NCAA history. But let's not confuse you with the facts. By the way scholar, when did the playoffs expand? Because had the current playoff format existed, Franklin coached teams would have had multiple playoff appearances.

Franklin didn’t want VT. He will jump the first chance he gets. Cal should be an easy win for him, but we all know how Franklin follows up one loss… so if that happens today he’ll take himself out of the running. Then again, don’t underestimate FSU’s ability to make bad hires.
Franklin isn't getting offered that kind of role nor does he want pressure
I think Va Tech is exactly the role he wants

Or does he go to FSU
He is better off at VT. His closest recruiting rival is PSU, and we are in a different conference. VA, UNC, NC St and Clemson are all down. Other than Miami and perhaps Duke (Manny is doing a great job there) there is not much competition in the ACC. FSU is a disaster, worse than the situation he walked into at VT. FSU sued to leave their conference and has crapped the bed since then. They are $15m behind Miami in NIL, and Florida hired Sumrall, who will do well there. I think FSU is screwed in the new era of cfb. James will fake interest in fsu and get another $1m-$2m out of VT. I think he is in the perfect spot at the moment.

Fellow scholar, the former coach had playoff worthy teams in most seasons from 2016 to 2023 before the playoffs expanded, and failed to get PSU into them. Those are facts too. He had OSU on the ropes in 2017, 2018 and 2022 and somehow came up short in all of them; even the 2023 game went deep into the fourth quarter before it was decided. If PSU had won one or more of those games, they might have made the playoffs in at least one of those seasons. Also, while the sanctions affected depth, he didn’t inherit a talentless team.

For the love of...
Like I said, the sanctions affected depth. However, PSU was good enough in 2014 to beat BC in a bowl game, and they didn’t have a losing record in either 2014 or 2015. Also, the teams from 2016 through 2019 were probably the most talented at PSU since the mid 1990s, so the sanctions had a minimal impact on the program.

He inherited a team with 65 scholarships and 4 scholarship offensive linemen. It's true Franklin didn't make the playoffs when it was a field of 4 teams. Despite the fact that in 2016 PSU was the Big Ten Champion. Blaming Franklin for failing to make the playoffs makes perfect sense. Under his coaching PSU lost it's spot to Michigan and Ohio State. They never won a spot like the 134 other division 1 teams. Obviously, WE DESERVE BETTER! Now you have it! Congrats!

65 players minimal impact? I'll have what you are smoking.

I stand by my comment, and by 2016 PSU had entered into a period of very talent rich teams, and not all of that talent arrived in 2016. He also inherited a qb who became a high draft choice whom he had for his first two seasons, and whom almost every program would’ve wanted.

He inherited a QB that played 2 years and washed out with at least 3 NFL teams never playing a snap.
Not to mention lower level organizations. I was at the bowl game Hack checked out of Vs Georgia and McSorley immediately injected more life into the offense.
2016 Team was largely Franklin recruited. Let's compare it to the 2027 team Campbell has lined up.

Depth is critical in football. This isn't Canasta. Are you telling me PSU doesn't miss Howard and Granville?

in the 5 years before Fisher arrived, FSU averaged 5.4 losses/year with one year of 4 losses being the lowest total.

The "difference is" that FSU was a top 10 program when Jimbo took over
Is that based on the Marshall ranking system?
By the way scholar, when did the playoffs expand? Because had the current playoff format existed, Franklin coached teams would have had multiple playoff appearances.
Haha, he would have gotten more participation trophies had the money grubbing bleeding hearts only expanded sooner.

Even after blowing the tOSU game in 2017, they still likely make the playoffs if they had just beat MSU in the following game. That was Franklin’s/PSU’s real blown opportunity year.
