Iowa goes 11-1 in style

I tend to agree with this. If you had asked me before the season if 10-2 would get Iowa into the CFP, with Oregon, Penn St, Michigan and Washington dropping out of contention, I would have said heck, yeah. But now I don't think so. The B1G is not certain to get 4 teams in, and right now Iowa is far behind IN and OSU, and is now behind UCLA (remaining schedule similar to Iowa's) and USC (remaining schedule brutal).

I think Iowa is definitely IN at 11-1 (or 11-2 if they play in the BTCG), but they would need "help" to get in at 10-2 (multiple losses by IN and USC and/or the SEC cannibalizing itself). A 10-2 record with a loss to one of the teams remaining on our schedule, with our best win being Michigan/Washington/Nebraska is a really good season but the resume may fall short for the CFP....
I think any P4 team with a 11-1 record is in.

But, an 11-1 record brings us to the B1G championship where, if we played Ohio St again. We would likely lose again. Bringing us to 2 losses.
There is no golden goose scenario right now for Iowa. Win out and they play in a hard to win game against Ohio St. Lose 2 games and they likely miss out on not just the CCG, but the CFP.

Call me whatever name in the book, I'm just using logic and decades of being a Hawkeye fan. The SEC has too many ranked teams and they will find a way to get more teams in than the B1G.

Yes, there is still a chance, but Iowa does not control their own destiny.

Unfortunately most years we probably get in with a 10-2 record. This year probably not unless UCLA loses 2 of their last 7 with a pretty easy schedule, and Indiana loses at least 2 games going forward.
I agree, and I've been saying this for weeks. 10-2 isn't anywhere near a lock to get in today.

Any sec team at 9-3 is not deserving of a CFP BID. IF the B12, ACC or B1G has teams at 11-1, they are better than the 9-3 sec teams. Moral , don’t lose 3 games no matter what your name is.

Well a 9-3 team isn't getting in over an 11-1 team so you don't have to worry about that. A 9-3 SEC team could sneak in over a 10-2 team however.

If we control our own destiny, that means we can't be left out as long as we don't lose. Doesn't that include the BTCG? If 11-1 Iowa is in, 12-1 Iowa is an auto in.

I love this board. A week ago, after losing to one of the best teams in the country, most were discussing how we get to 6 wins. Today, it’s the path to the cfp. It’s awesome.

Before anyone comes to rip my head off, I’m not calling anyone out. Just calling out the ridiculousness of this board sometimes.

Call me naive. But. Looking at the current standings.

Indiana 3-0
UCLA 3-0
OSU 3-0
Wisconsin 2-0
USC 3-1
Purdue 2-1
IOWA 2-1
Nebraska 2-1
Minnesota 2-1

Iowa could win out. go 11-1 and NOT control their own destiny, at least in regards to the BIG championship game. Simply because they do not play Indiana, UCLA, or USC. In order for Iowa to play in the BIG championship you need at least 2 of the 3 IU, UCLA, or OSU to lose at least 2 games. And to be safe USC to lose another. That is of course assuming that Iowa runs the table.

Our one loss to Ohio State makes me wonder about tie breakers against other 1 loss teams not losing to Ohio State. Maybe I'm not doing the math correctly here though. So if it's Iowa and USC at 11-1, assuming Ohio State finishes with no losses. Or Indiana at 11-1. I'm probably making this too confusing but could 11-1 also leave us out given some teams we won't play could match that record.

*Edit 7thSummitCoach just posted the same, his make sense*

Look at the conference standings, then look at those teams' schedules. Some of them can go undefeated, more than likely won't. Iowa needs help to make it in. Even right now they wouldn't even be amongst even the last 4 out, let alone be a CFP team. I listed just a couple of those scenarios. Obviously there are others. Iowa really needs to finish 11-1 and miss out playing the CCG.

Idk if Iowa makes it through their next 3 games without a loss, let alone the rest of the season. I also don't think a 10-2 Iowa team will make the playoff. The committee will say we played no one and yadda yadda and find a reason to add another SEC team in our place.

I'm telling you, Iowa can never have nice things.

6 more games. I still don't see 10-2 as a sure thing. If you see it as a sure thing, make sure you leave us a copy of your betslip. Even Purdue will give us hell. Northwestern and their Wing T will also be tough to stop. Wisconsin looks better now than when I made that comment. So does Nebraska. I will admit when I'm wrong, I doubt you will.

Feel free to search threads, I openly admit when I’m wrong. I just don’t make statements while speaking out of my ***. Northwestern is a solid stumble game, Minnesota does not impress. Wisky, their qb is ****, Debby, well who knows, but that game is here. I would be surprised if Colandrea plays the whole season, but he is solid.

Sorry, but I just don't agree for a second that this is not Lesters call. He has way to good of a current resume for Kirk to over rule his chance to be successful in his current gig. If Lester truly wanted one guy and Kirk overrides him I think 100% he won't be here next season.
Kirk would take Lester’s recommendation.

Any team playing in BTCG is automatically in. You can’t penalize teams for playing an extra game.

They need teams in front of them to lose. Including members of our own conference.

4 teams are in just due to winning their conference. If an ACC scenario happens again this year (team that doesn't deserve it wins their CCG) that is 5 teams in and 7 remaining.
Take one of those away for the top G6 team. That leaves 6 teams with an at large bid.
Yes, in some realm of possibility Iowa could win their CG. I'd be willing to bet my lifesavings against it.

Again, I'm not negative or looking for a fight. All other opinions are welcome to me. I like a good debate. But never sink low enough to ridicule fellow Hawkeye fans for having an opinion. I'm just strictly a realist.

Below is a fictitious, yet possible and likely CFP bracket for the current status of the season. Only 2 B1G teams are even considered right now.

Notre Dame steals another at-large bid. They could lose to BYU and still make it in. Utah isn't a likely spot either, but UCLA would probably take their place or even another SEC team.

That makes 5 remaining at-large bids. 5 teams will have their schedules, performances and stats under a microscope by a committee.

Iowa has one of the easier schedules.

That doesn't help their case. Biggest win? Michigan? Not looking like a great win anymore.

God forbid we lose to one of those "simple teams" (that some Hawk fans think has no shot against our Hawkeyes:rolleyes:) and then their chances at a CFP would go to crap and would need quite a bit of help.

Winning out and winning the CCG would secure a spot. But, again I'd be willing to bet my house on that not happening. So I don't view it as a likely option.

Am I wrong? Maybe.

  1. Head-to-head result — if the tied teams played each other.
  2. Record against all common Big Ten opponents.
  3. Record against the best common conference opponent, then the next-best common opponent, continuing down the standings.
  4. Cumulative Big Ten winning percentage of all conference opponents — basically conference strength of schedule.
  5. SportSource Analytics Team Rating Score after the regular season.
  6. Random draw conducted by the commissioner or designee.

I pray that it doesn't happen. But that Wing T offense honestly scares me and it's a road game in their new stadium. I've heard its pretty loud for the small amount of people they have in there.

Purdue scares me as well. They're balanced and their schedule shows they're not the old pin cushion they used to be.

Well, I guess a million things are possible, but I would bet MY house that there won't be three Big 12 teams in the CFP and only two Big Ten teams. The chances of Iowa winning out and winning the BTCG are greater than that.

However, fans have the luxury of looking ahead in the schedule.
Perhaps. I'm not sure what good it accomplishes, though.

And I have seen where fans overlook a team, and just don't bring the necessary energy and fight, when Iowa ends up being in a dog fight with that team.

Anyway, 5-1 is the thought I had to contribute, about the situation

Washington's lines are not very good. The Hawks will see better line play from their opponents in many of the remaining games
That’s the issue it’s always “well, the opposing team just sucks anyway after Iowa has a great performance and that’s why Iowa won” no, Iowa won because they dominated both lines of scrimmage and Heck has a quick trigger and can move in the pocket. Now remember Washington was a -2.5 favorite going into this game and Iowa blew the doors off them 27-3 heading into the 2nd qtr… let’s give son credit where credit is due

Blaming the fan base for overlooking a team and not bringing energy to a game. JFC. Get over yourself.
I guess I don't understand your contention with this. Can fans do no wrong, in your book?

Certainly you've seen this happen before.

Why is it wrong to point out ways in which fans can do better? Are we not trying to give the Hawkeyes their best chance to win?
