Coaches are really struggling with these end of game kickoffs
We saw that with Baltimore 2 weeks ago (or maybe it was last week.
I still firmly believe a 14 year old playing Madden 24-7 would make better decisions (clock management too)

Shocked they kicked it in play. Almost no possible way Jags win if the Eagles kick it out of the end zone or even out of bounds.

Squib isn’t really an option.
Sure you can do it kick it right through their line or just over the line makes the return a lot harder.

but is would be moot if just ran the ball on first down in FG range and called time out with 3 seconds left in the game.

The worst case scenario is not getting the kick to hit inside their 20...and if you're going to be safe to avoid that, then there isn't a good squib option to stop their returner from getting it. With no timeouts for JAX, seems like the "kick it out of the endzone" was the best option.

Or if somebody ran down and made a tackle

I watched the play again. There was really not much chance at making a tackle. Rondon had the best chance and it wasn't a good one. The play was well blocked by Jax. I would be asking Michael Clay how he was so dominated on 2 different kick returns (including the opening kick. yeah, I know there was a penalty).

After rewatching the ending, Liam Coen actually botched the ending worse than Nick. After the Eagles got to the Jax 34, he should have immediately called TO. This was pretty apparent in real time. He wasted at least 20 seconds before finally calling TO for what was maybe a schematic issue.

I don't fault Nick so much for the kick off return. If he kicked it out of the EZ, Jax had time to make a long pass on 1st down, which was probably just as possible as a kick return. However, why not run the ball on 1st down when you get to the Jax 34 and make them burn their last TO? And when you throw an incomplete pass on 1st down, why not run it on 2nd? And if you are going to pass it on 2nd down, your players better know to not go out of bounds. Go down immediately and make Jax burn the last TO. Very poor game management.

well yes a pecking order of choices and of what the best thing to do kick it out of endzone for sure but if your guy cant do that -- Elliot is suspect

go watch it again, 17 runs around the block, if he strikes that guy down the middle or even if he dodges toward the ball, (rule is always dodge toward the ball, the hole is compressed and the return is minimal. 17 opened up the gate,

where does the team receiving the ball get the ball if you kick it Out of bounds? HOw much time would be left? do they have a time out? what is the range of the kicker? What they did was the correct choice, covering the kick would have been the best choice.

Ok, I did. 17 looks like he is intentionally filling the lane where he ran by design. It appears that he is expecting 84 to fill the gap where the returner ran. But 84 got double teamed. I don't know special teams that well, but I bet 84 is who was supposed to be in position for that tackle but Jax blocked it very well. To me this looked a lot more like good scheming by Jax (and poor by Philly) and not poor execution.

disagree, to me 17 is making a business decision to not take on the blocker as he should. 7 would have had an easier time closing the gate it 17 had'en let it wide open . I see the double but I highly doubt that guy and 17 were exchanging responsibilities. 17 is the one that plays it like a ***** to me.

That makes no sense. The blocker isn't running toward him. 17 has all the momentum so there is no reason to try to avoid the blocker. He never abruptly veers away from a blocker. He literally never changes direction from the second he starts running until the returner is passed him. If he was trying to avoid getting hit, you would see him abruptly shift direction or ease up.

if you dont want to get hit you'll do what 17 did. He can take a little bump, but he never strikes the guy down the middle as should

Or when you have a certain lane responsibility, you do what 17 did. He was part of the outside contain. Your best argument here is that he should have adapted his lane when he saw where the returner was going. Either way, Jacksonville obviously found a flaw in the Eagles coverage and exploited it.
