Aside from wrestling, what’s your next favorite PSU sport?

I’m really wondering how many of us just aren’t into football given how few of you I see post on about footbalk

Football would be closest to highly interested. I quit getting season tickets about 20 years ago, but still followed with great interest. The interest darn near disappeared when the Trustees threw Paterno under the bus. It has come back a little, but not like my first 45 or so years of life. Apparently with PSU in 7th place in the Big10 as far as NIL commitment is concerned, the university isn't as interested either.

During the year I will attend a game or two for
Women’s volleyball, football, baseball, softball, hockey (M and W) and gymnastics.

Also attend multiple Eisenhower events.

I feel like we need to give Coach 3 years to show who he is. I have resigned to punting this year and the next 2.
If things were as they were 10 years ago, yep. However, they should be able to build up the roster with the portal and elite traditional recruiting much more quickly than previously. I get he knew Becht, but I am stuck questioning his ability to judge talent. Gronkemeyer is a D1 QB talent. Becht looks like he is in over his head at Big10 speeds.

None.

Notre Dame football, Villanova basketball, anyone for swimming.

On second thought, since anyone includes PSU, I guess the real answer is swimming.

But screw diving.
One of my best friends growing up sent 3 of his kids to Villonova. He became a big fan and has taken me to several games. I find myself rooting for them in basketball.

Question about Notre Dame. With all of the crap Indiana has received for their OOC schedule, I was wondering if you maybe knew why Notre Dame doesn't catch the same grief for their schedule period. Well, except for BYU.

I ran into Jay Wright at a restaurant and told him my dad, my daughter, and my money all went to Villanova. I got a laugh.

As for the ND schedule I have heard a bunch of blowback but they have an ACC schedule and sometimes they get Clemson and sometimes they don't but the real issue is that the ACC's quality has slid with all the realignment. They also play three Big 10 teams and sometimes they are good teams and sometimes not. Then they play Navy out of tradition. Finally USC cancelled on ND because they joined the Big 10 and wanted to make their OOC schedule easier.

Indian gets flack for the same reason as USC. They cancelled on UMass (not exactly a dynamo) replacing them with Jacksonville State (an FBS team since 2023), schedules Kennesaw State (that has only had a team since 2015 and only been FBS since 2022), and scheduled an FCS team (Indian State). So their OOC schedule is basicly three FCS, or near FCS teams.

I am a huge volleyball fan, so usually that is my go-to sport along with football. However, their early struggles this year dampened my enthusiasm. This fall has been tough- both men’s and women’s soccer teams, women’s volleyball and football are just painful to watch☹️

College Sports is getting tougher and tougher for me in general. To much player movement and the misapplication of NIL money has really turned me off. Now having athletes in court trying to get more eligibility is pushing me away even more. If I had to select it would be football.

Anybody that attends Eisenhauer events is good with me. I can tell you the Eisenhauer/Eisenhower origins if anyone is interested.

Wait, the ACC's quality has slid? Who knew? Some posters here think they have murderer's row and PSU couldn't complete.

I've recently started to watch Lax. That is a very enjoyable sport to get into. I am still VERY green on the learning the rules and how the game plays out. I think it has some similarities to Hockey, although I cannot pin point them, lol. I guess the physicality is similar in a way. I grew up playing Baseball all the way through college. I wish my HS had Lax because I believe that was a sport I would have enjoyed. Not that I didn't love Baseball.

I really only love football and wrestling in general. The only sport I like even half as much as those 2 is sprint car racing.

I hate the NFL. And I hate it when college football tries to run itself like the NFL. This 24 team playoff crap is a disaster.

I think the 24 team playoff will prove very successful, but I still don't like it.

My stepdad loves dirt track racing. He took me to Lernerville years back and it made NASCAR seem boring in comparison. There are several late model/super late model racers up where I live. Some are semi-retired (Chub Frank and Boom Briggs), others are still racing most weekends. One of my students dad wrestled back in the day (he was a Fargo qualifier in ‘02). He races late mods and he races basically every weekend from January to September.

In the entire history of college football, no 3 loss team has been deemed national champ because no 3 loss team ever deserved it. Very few (under 8) 2 loss teams were worthy.

Letting virtually all 2 loss teams and many 3 loss teams compete for a national championship will monumentally cheapen the regular season, which was perennially the best overall regular season in sports.

I think Chub won the World 100 once.

In central PA, dirt track racing is obviously huge. My favorite track is Port Royal. My favorite WAS Silver Spring before it closed in 2005. 2 relatives raced flathead stock cars and super sportsman sprint cars, respectively, at "the springs."

LOL why do the womens sports always out do the mens??
Consistency in coaching, which necessarily implies the athletic department doesn't mess with them. Wrestling is extremely lucky in that it's been extremely insulated from the overall administrative chaos at Penn State in recent years.

I get every point you are making. It is still going to be successful.
There have only been 2 2 loss football champs. Gophers in 60 and Florida in 2007. Neither team celebrates the championship with an asterisk. If PSU goes 9-3 in the regular season, gets the 24 seed and runs the playoff table 5-0 i am not refusing to celebrate the championship.

Back in my HS days my girlfriend’s father used to regularly take us all to Hesston Speedway. Loved the place but by the end of the night I always prayed that my hearing would eventually return.

My parents have been to Port Royal a bunch and they love it. My stepdad said he always used to laugh at the people who would scoff at Chub when he first started racing because he never had the fancy equipment the bigger guys would. Chub would crush them in the race and they’d change their tune real fast lol. From what I understand, he and Boom still race at Stateline from time to time. Mostly because it’s a super short distance from their homes

1960 was crazy. Minnesota was, yes, AP champs but the AP voted *before* the bowls - Minnesota lost badly to Washington.

The best national title claim for 1960 is probably Iowa. Iowa did lose by 17 to Minnesota but were otherwise very strong against a brutal schedule.

I wouldn't recognize any team as national champ in 1984 or 2007.

Hesston is way the hell up there in the boonies. I guess it's still open. I don't think the 410s ever ran there. Some late models.

Pound for pound, I think the Port is the best sprint car track in the Northeast other than Grandview. Williams Grove gets more attention but the Port puts on the best shows.

20 years ago I wouldn't say that. The track conditions were awful. But they improved the heck out of that track.

Oy! Men's lacrosse is now pretty unwatchable to me. I played the game briefly in college in the 70s and the degree of change because, mostly, of rule changes has been insufferable. I had a neighbor years ago (2010s) that happened to be from the same howntown in PA as I and who happened to be in the National Lacrosse HofF. He told me he couldn't watch the game anymore. Biggest rule change was in allowing substitution during play which has resulted in large periods of inactivity while players shunt on and off the field. The game has slowed down so much compared to 40 years ago. That and the bizarre rule that keeps possession after a missed shot with whichever team has a player closest to the ball when it goes out of bounds - so that the offensive team keeps a player close to the out of bounds line and their teammates just wind up and fire the ball as hard as the can somewhere close to the goal.
