Singles main draw consolation:

Evans wins! 6-2, 7-5

On the penultimate point, Bowers of Auburn called it out, it was overruled and she got a one point penalty, which means there was never a match point, lol.

Not sure what is going on with A. Nguyen's match: it was 7-6, 1-6 but no 3rd set, so maybe Nguyen withdrew?

Looks like aTm's Paskauskas has advanced.

Tomorrow consolation round of 16:
  • #95 Khirin (UTR 11.XX) vs #49 Kristina Paskauskas, (10.65) time TBD
  • #21 Evans (11.33) vs #54 Emma Dong (11.05) of UGA time TBD

How lucky is this Texas A&M girl three straight wins due to retirement.

Alexis and Nicole lost to injuries.

There have been a lot of retirements in this tournament. It’s been a ton of tennis day after day so hopefully the coaches are just being really cautious and telling the athletes to stop if they cramp up or something like that.

Speaking of a lot of tennis, Tatum Evans has now won her fourth Consi match in two days. Warrior. Beat two players from UGa today. She will play the woman from Ohio St who beat Nguyen in the main draw (3 sets). If she wins, she makes nationals.

Zampardo / Maltby are through to Nationals, won again today so play in the Main Draw finals tomorrow.

evans in a tough one right now bs Ohio State’s Sophia Cisse-Igniatev loses the first set 6-7 (5-7)

Zompardo/Maltby will face Perry/Johnson of Ohio State once Perry gets her rest period.

missed yesterday: rabman/manning made it all the way to the doubles semifinals but lost to UVA

That’s because Luciana Perry of Ohio State, the #2 seed going in, rolls Mimi Xu of dook for the singles title: 6-2, 6-1

thred Tar Heels were eliminated by the top 3 performers:

Frey lost to winner Perry,
Khirin lost to dook’s finalist Xu; only one to take her to 3 sets
Evans lost to semifinalist Nishino, also of Ohio St
this should help in rankings and eventual NCAA seedings should they all punch a ticket at a later tourney

ohio St with about as good a showing as you could hope for. they are also in the doubles consolation draw final later today.

ITA Regionals starts tomorrow and we have 12 Women in total who will play (our entire roster). As a reminder, there are 13 regions and two from each (plus one doubles team) region get a NCAA qualifying berth by reaching the finals. We are in the Carolinas region, hosted by UofSC

We start with the Qualifying draw on Thursday where Alana Boyce, Avery Nguyen, and Mary Grace Rennard will start. The other 9 all received berths in the main draw.

Here is the bracket:

Boyce, Avery Nguyen and Renard all win both of their qualifying round matches today and advance to the main draw.

So that means all 12 women on the UNC roster will be playing tomorrow morning in the Round of 64; that is a first.

We also have 5 doubles teams in the draw so 10 of those 12 will be playing doubles as well.

Wow, the Heels go 9-3 in the round of 64 with only the three qualifying draw entries losing due to tough outs with their low seeds.
  • Rennard loses to the 3 seed Tanasie of NCSU (10.91 UTR).
  • Boyce loses to Suchanova of Clemson (10.XX)
  • Aya Manning put up a good fight with the #2 seed Carnicella of UofSC (UTR 10.97) but falls 3-6, 5-7
Everyone else won in straight sets.

Mixed results in the round of 32:

Evans, Frey, Zampardo, Khirin and Ashar all lose. that is most of our seeded players, so upsets galore.

Nguyen, Nguyen, Hamilton and Rabman all win.

Hamilton upset Osuwuigwe of NCSU, probably the biggest win. thanks to that Avery Nguyen and Hamilton are now playing each other in the round of 16.

round of 32 doubles:
khirin/Frey, Evans/Hamilton,manning.Nguyen all advance, the latter with a big upset over NCSU. Boyce/Rabman fall

Singles Round of 16:

Avery Nguyen defeats Alanis Hamilton in some Heel-on-Heel violence; advances to the Quarterfinals.

Rabman and Alexis Nguyen also win again and both go to Quarters.

We are still alive to grab both NCAA qualifications: Avery is alone in the top half of the bracket. Alexis and Rabman would eventually clash for the qualifying spot in the semis.

Next round:
  • Avery Nguyen (UTR 9.xx) matches with dook's Eleana Yu (10.XX, who knocked off Evans 6-4, 6-4 earlier)
  • #85 Alexis Nguyen (10.93) vs #33 Tanasie (10.93) of NCSU
  • Thea Rabman (10.63) vs Stojanova (10.XX) of UofSC

Doubles Round of 16:

  • Khirin/Frey fall to the 1 seed from NCSU 6-8
  • 6 seed Hamilton/Evans roll over the Charleston duo 8-2, will face 3 seed Conway/Ananzagas of NCSU in the Quarters
  • Manning/Nguyen roll the ECU duo 8-3, will face the 5 seed Carnicella/Bergqvist of UofSC
Doubles Quarters just starting now.

side note: Former Tar Heel Claire Hill is doing quite well at WF; she too is in the singles QF.

She will face Alexis Nguyen, whom effectively faced her, for the NCAA spot in the semifinals if they both win their pending QF match

Why did Claire leave UNC?
She would have been in a battle to make top 6 like in previous years (last year she was #6 in the fall until Zapardo became eligible)

I would also guess (but do not know) that she was a walk-on at UNC whereas Wake gave her a scholly.

Avery Nguyen started out in the qualifying bracket and has now won 6 in a row to reach teh semis. What a marathon. Win the semis and she qualifies for the NCAA Singles Championship. She just beat Yu of dook 6-4, 6-4.

She will face unseeded Stojanova of UofSC who just beat 9-16 seed Rabman 5-7, 5-7

5 seed Alexis Nguyen fell to 3 seed Tanasie of NCSU 1-6, 0-6

So Avery stands as our only chance at a qualifier in this tourney for singles.

Evans/Hamilton are fighting it out in the Doubles semifinals right now, up 4-2 over UofSC. Win this match and they too will play for an NCAA berth next round.

Evans/Hamilton win a war: 5-7, 7-6 (10-8), 12-10

They will face NCSU's Osuigwe/Gilheany (the 1 seed) for the title and the NCAA berth.
Tomorrow (Tues) at 1 PM

Avery Nguyen's semifinal match starts at 10:30. I believe they likely will not play the final?

side note: Hey South Carolina, stop putting a permanent "Carolina" and "visitor" on your scoreboards. It is confusing as hell, especially when you are not even in the matches. we are often playing matches where "Carolina" is the other team and we are the visitors.

Nobody outside of Columbia calls you Carolina. Not even your rival. Nor your conference.

Heartbreak to close out Regionals: UNC loses both the singles match and doubles match that would have qualified Avery Nguyen and Evans/Hamilton for the NCAA's.

We will have a last chance at Sectionals just before the NCAA's

Your side note made me laugh out loud. I actually went to USC for business school, and I can tell you there is no way they will back off calling themselves Carolina. It’s a key output of the inferiority complex they’ve got going down there.

The team did very well, considering this team is relatively young and has transfers who have never played with one another before. The freshman class has proven themselves in such a short time. The transfers are settling in. It appears that our sophomores like Frey have made the jump from their freshman year to their sophomore year. Overall, they should be proud of themselves. They must continue to put the work in and get better each tournament moving forward. This should help build their confidence moving forwards as a team. They did lose some key players to graduation this past year. Go Heels!

Again LOL! I can’t begrudge them USC although I greatly appreciate the UofSC nomenclature.
Their own athletic marketing department did a study in the late 2000s that determined that Carolina is universally the Heels and USC is universally the Trojans everywhere but in South Carolina. As a result, you will notice they never refer to themselves as either in official athletic communications.
