I’ve stayed away from the football threads this season, partially because I had no real idea what to expect. Anyone telling you they saw this train wreck coming is playing the result; nothing more, nothing less.

Overall, I’m happy with what I am seeing.

Off-the field. I think it is necessary that the program, the alums, and the fans go through this season. For too long everyone made the head coaching job at this school a title for life and actively fought for any replacement to be a loyal insider like Scrap or Terry. Every other school, except for the end-time Bowden years at FSU, routinely rotates through coaches and staff. Sometimes it works (Georgia, Miami, OSU), sometimes it doesn’t (Texas A&M, current Michigan). James Franklin’s time had come and passed. Campbell may be a crappy replacement. But already the same fools who said Franklin gets to stay forever are now calling for Campbell’s head based on ½ a season. The ones saying give him more time are not projecting out 15 years like Franklin or Paterno, they are saying 3 or 4 seasons. That’s a far cry from the Paterno era where Jesus Christ himself could have lobbied for the job and still not gotten it. And that’s what progress looks like.

On the field. This team stinks, but I don’t see Campbell losing them nor do I see him looking for an exit door or throwing everyone under the bus. I do think Campbell and some of these ISU guys have a bit of a “dog who caught the car” look from time to time. It happens and I suspect that Campbell will grow out of it by next year. He probably needs to pull a Franklin and go find a Joe Moorehead to come in and help him organize/utilize a beast like PSU. Would probably also help if he could recruit a local Saquon again. Going forward, I think he will slowly rebuild the team and field a few scrappy squads over the next 2 or 3 years. If during that time he can pull off the random unranked win vs a highly ranked team, you’ll see media momentum explode and the recruits and transfers will notice. College football wants and needs PSU to be good, trust me. If Campbell can't pull it off in 3 to 4 years, you go find the next guy who can. Simple as that.

As I have said on here several times I watch Miami because of the Mrs. I’ll tell you what they did (yes, the ACC sucks, I get it) but listen to me:

  • Michael Irvin. Yes, this guy is a famous alum and super bowl champion loudmouth on the side lines. But he actively finds, develops, and mentors these kids when they are young via his camps and other means. For years he worked to undermine Ohio State’s/Chris Carter’s hold on the local south Florida high school football factory schools and started to funnel these kids to Miami long before they could even drive a car. PSU has no one like that in the state of PA.
  • Miami buys their QB. If the guys they recruit develop, cool. But they don’t let a Justin Fields flip ruin their class.
  • Miami makes you a star, not just an NIL deal. Look up the Malachi Toney book bag. The kids down here sold it out in about 10 seconds when they released it. eBay had it going for over $1,000 shortly thereafter. PSU still doesn’t have names on the jerseys. It’s not necessarily about the money the school’s NIL fund will pay you, it’s whether you can become a star with the school’s help. PSU needs to develop a star and market the hell out of him. They openly refused to do that in the past.
  • Miami recruits and develops the d-line and o-line shockingly well. Franklin struggled mightily with this and Campbell appears to be headed down this road also. If you don’t know, Jason Taylor is the d-line coach at Miami. Yes, the hall of famer. Guess who actually played offensive line in college at D1? The head coach for Miami. Know who the assistant head coach is? The actual offensive line coach for Miami. Until you can put that level of emphasis, knowledge, and experience on those two areas of the field, PSU is going to struggle to consistently win and recruit.

Why precisely would Campbell's Free Agents be looking for an exit door when Campbell is paying them top-dollar, they stink and nobody else would probably even pay them a dime. The only people who are going to leave are the best players on the team - the Franklin-recruited holdovers who are being wildly underpaid, especially relative to Campbell's over-paid scrub FAs.

Yeah, I don't think your average PS fan has the same global view as you. That takes a real fan of the game of CFB.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts and observations. I have just a couple different takes on a few areas you mentioned.

First, I think you are in a minority regarding the current train wreck. My view is that most PSU fans who have followed the program during the Franklin era, were well aware that this train wreck was coming even if Franklin had not been fired. Franklin bet the farm on a senior-dominated roster in order to contend for a National Title run. It didn’t work out as planned. The post Kaytron-Singleton-Allar year was anticipated to be a rebuild year because of the number of seniors lost to the NFL and graduation. This was not a surprise.

Second, the days of having a program focus mostly on local talent are long gone. NIL has changed the local recruiting landscape dramatically. The top players go where the money can be obtained regardless of location. That’s why several big time PA,NJ, and MD recruits have bolted to programs like Oregon, Missouri, Tennessee, Alabama, Georgia, Ohio State and Notre Dame. Those programs simply paid high end recruits more money than Penn State.

Lastly, the days of giving new coaches 4-5 years to turn things around are long gone. There is too much money at stake. Can you imagine the financial impact on Penn State if attendance starts to decline once people realize they are paying exorbitant prices to see a degraded second-tier product? It could be disastrous for the athletic department.

The reality is that the program is at a crossroads. I think the next head to roll will be Pat Kraft. Time will tell.

So what exactly makes you happy about this season? You didn’t mention anything positive.

I’d be happy if I saw an identity or great coaching or a foundation of young talent or strong recruiting or general program buzz. I’ve seen none of the above.

I agree with the OP. I haven't seen anything that would make me believe that CMC is a bad coach or that he isn't a strong leader of young men.

I do think he underestimated the talent necessary to compete in the B1G and that that will have to be something he adjusts to. Having said that, the current talent on this team and the absence of the 2026 recruiting class is not something to be counted against CMC.

Give the man 4 years to build, recruit and coach this program as he sees fit and if there isn't noticeable growth, then it's time to move on but it's ridiculous to count the current state of affairs at PSU against CMC. He inherited this. It is not of his making. WE ARE!

I'm willing to concede this season of course, but you can't have 2 or 3 more years of this. With NIL and the portal, you must build something quicker than 3 or 4 years. He will have to work the system. Next year must be vastly better than this one or this regime is not getting off the ground.

Not convinced that this is a Big Ten style crew here. Should have gone after other Big Ten castoffs over bringing in so many Iowa Staters. It's clear they cannot play in this league.

He doesn't get a free pass. Becht is terrible this year. Campbell needs to take some responsibility for that. He's the HC, the 4 year QB now is losing games for you. That falls on coaching. The O-Line is listless. The D-Line is worse than listless. No defensive adjustments. Yes, weak talent which is a tough draw but I see no physicality or toughness on the lines. And tackling is weak.

No way does Campbell get a free pass so far. Certainly he gets at least 3 years although the 4th is given if there is at least steady improvement and significant when comparing year 1 to year 3. Personally, I think it will be tough for him to show significant improvement over the next 3 years. We have to overhaul the roster. He needs a new boss who can rain in the NIL and he needs to recruit well in our key recruiting areas. He also needs to show he can beat some teams who have better talent.

I don't agree with your second point. Reread my Miami analysis. The first thing I talk about is how Irivin has single handedly driven the local talent to the school. Some of it is 5 star, some of it is not. But there is a consistent quality local pipeline that is providing the bulk of the roster depth and fairly regularly is ensnaring the higher-end talent to stay. From there they bring in the national guys. I'm not saying the local 3 or 4 star is coming to Miami for a discount, but when all things are equal they are choosing to stay home because of the long-term relationship they have with Irvin, who roams the sidelines every game. When you combine that with everything else I listed, it all comes together. If PSU tries to go national without Uncle Bezos or Gates floating this or Nick Saban being the new OC, they are going to get killed. Franklin, to his credit, recognized it before NIL was a thing but he couldn't put the Irvin style pipeline in place to dominate the state. That was also the biggest short-term gamble with Campbell, he didn't have a personal local connection to tap into and PSU has no Irvin who would keep sending the players regardless of who replaced Franklin.

In general I don't know that I agree with the last point. West Virginia, Fresno State, and Kansas State aren't firing every two years. Alabama, Ohio State, Michigan, and Notre Dame probably are. PSU is inching towards that group. My initial post was that, IMO, it was a good thing that fans want the PSU coach on a short leash. That completely changes the theme that was PSU football for the last 100 years. And even more change is needed.

Also, If I have learned one thing about this fan base, they will show up for any PSU football team. Good, bad, or putrid. I'm pretty confident I could get a Beaver Stadium sellout if we brought everyone back from the 1994 team and had them play the number 1 team in the country in 2027 during a whiteout. Hope springs eternal in Happy Valley. And as much as this may upset some people, go listen to the United Airlines CEO. He recently said that despite a 23% increase in ticket costs, they can't keep up with demand for business class and above. College football is going to be the same way. The people with money will never stop going. The simpler folks will stay home. And, to be kind, the simpler folks' money is chicken scratch compared to what these programs earn from TV deals, merchandising, and sponsorships. Ten thousand of them simpler folk deciding to stay home for some random game in October against Minnesota is not even going to even register on the radar.

I did say that I don’t see Campbell losing [the team] nor do I see him looking for an exit door or throwing everyone under the bus. I also don't see him yelling at the fans as he leaves the stadium, that counts for something.

He doesn't get a free pass. Becht is terrible this year. Campbell needs to take some responsibility for that. He's the HC, the 4 year QB now is losing games for you. That falls on coaching. He not only recruited most of the "talent" here, but he brought them over with him as highly-paid Free Agents - Campbell spent +$30 million on this roster; what on earth makes you think he'll bring in better Free Agents next year??? Given that he originally recruited all these over-paid talent-light Free Agents, are his talent evaluation and recruiting skills simply going to improve because he's wearing a PSU pullover and baseball cap??? Some of you people are still living in fantasyland regarding Campbell's proven trackrecord of building top teams via savy talent evaluation and acquisition -- he was barely above .500 in his tenure at ISU. What leads you to believe he's going to suddenly become the next Urban Meyers? Why are Bob Chesney and Will Stein having so much more success with their large number of Free Agent transfers when they spent less money in the portal than Campbell did????

Huh.

You said, "Campbell may be a crappy replacement." "On the field the team stinks."

What did you see that you like? At Penn state, not miami.

I did say that I don’t see Campbell losing [the team] nor do I see him looking for an exit door or throwing everyone under the bus. I also don't see him yelling at the fans as he leaves the stadium, that counts for something.
Sorry I had to do it.

So what exactly makes you happy about this season? You didn’t mention anything positive.

I’d be happy if I saw an identity or great coaching or a foundation of young talent or strong recruiting or general program buzz. I’ve seen none of the above.
Franklin is gone and miami looks good.

Campbell does not have to yell at fans because tge fans are not yelling at him. The fans now expect to lose.

Yeah too bad he can’t win a Big Ten game. Interesting how all the posters are NOW defending the product we see on the field this year with it was going to be a rebuilding year any way when many of them were talking about an outside chance at a playoff spot given (1) the weak schedule; (2) Campbell brought his boy Becht to lead the transition; and (3) Campbell was clearly an upgrade who can “coach up” those 2 and 3 stars and be world beaters.

Kind of an "Other than that, how did you like the play Mrs Lincoln" perspective :)

I do think its time to look to next year and see if Manske is the answer or do we need to dive into the Portal at the end of the season for a QB- I don't care what he is being paid - not my money. The season is over for all intensive purposes so let's start to prepare for next year.

Sure. There is nothing to like about the win and loss record for this season, the team is not great from a talent perspective, and Campbell MAY be a crappy replacement (he might not be, hard to say yet). However, and this my surprise a few folks, and it may be misleading to some degree, but the defense ranks 5th nationally in passing yards allowed. So there is some talent back there and a defense that, as a scheme/system does something right. I don't think they are remotely close to beating a top ten team, but they are only a few positions away from quickly getting out of the BIG basement next year. With NIL and the brand name, they can upgrade some of those spots pretty quickly. Enough to beat OSU? Not yet. But enough to get momentum going and to start to attract better talent overall? Probably. It's going to be a slow build, but momentum is a funny thing. I like Campbell's attitude, he gets the school, and I think once he gets the deer in headlights look out of his eyes you will see better in-game decision making. He may not be the guy long-term, but I'm ok with him being the transition guy to the next one.

You play Manske and still go to the portal regardless of what Manske does. Playing Becht risks repeating Franklin's Clifford folly. The season is done, the older experienced QB didn't work out, so bring in Allar. Again, you can't let recruiting be the sole source of the QB position; they take took long to develop, get hurt, or sunk cost fallacy takes over. Justin Fields flips on you and now your whole class tanks. Better to buy the position and hope the recruited QB guys work out.

From what I have heard - Campbell has endorsed the traditions that Penn State is a special place. Many of us as grads from a long time ago learned to be adults over years spent in classes, rooting for all of the wrestling, women's volleyball and state college bars on Friday and Saturday's. He has instituted student performance, Penn State intrinsic values and a football winning value.
BUT - this is a team of Iowa State players here for only one year, to play football and earn media money while doing so. The team is not together, not pulling for each other, not performing on the field to be the best and not winning. And many coach-up standards do not apply.

The Penn State football team that many of us know and have seen in the past will return again only when all of the players actually want to be at, and play for Penn State - the wrestling team of today would come to mind as an example.

Once he gets the deer in the headlights look out of his eyes you will see better in-game decision making. Really? The guy coached a decade at a P4 program. We shouldn’t have to live through an on-the-job situation. (You) are also ok with (Campbell) being the transition to the next one. I thought Franklin was fired for not meeting the “standard” of winning Big and National Championships. Gimme a break.

See, that right there is progress. You would already be happy with running Campbell out today based on your personal standards for lack of performance. Before you wouldn't have allowed that talk with James or presumably Paterno. We now both agree that lifetime appointment is unacceptable and it is fair game to demand what we believe to be an acceptable level of winning from these coaches. Only difference here is that I am I'm willing to give Campbell a few years (3 to 4) to see if he can put it together on a bigger stage. If after 3 or 4 years he hasn't done much of anything, off he goes. I assume you will be the first to kick him out. On a positive note, he gets the school and seems to run a clean program; I believe he may be a good transition coach to a bigger name if he can't figure it out.

You also said we don't have a michael irvin funneling talent to psu.

I will add the fact that pennsylvania does not have the talent. Florida is 1-3 in talent and pennsylvania is around 10-20 and fading.

Psu does not even have the funding g to keep the in state talent. Miami is #2 in NIL. Psu is 22+.

Your plan is probably ly the same plan mid west wrestling schools had 10 years ago to keep up with psu wrestling.
