Why cant we outflank these stacked defenses in the box?

Are we still that slow? We cant show run and then shift to 5 wide? I dont get it because Minny was all out to stop our run game with Lbkrs filling gaps right away and a safety close to the LOS.

Minny crashing the line and not one flea flicker. 30 rushes for 90 yards, yikes
@eyesofhawk says we should keep running the ball into a f***ing wall because that makes our offense work better........

Teams have stacked the box on KF for a quarter-century, and we still haven't figured out how to beat it. And they will continue to do it. It's disgusting. It's one of the reasons we are always have one of the worst P4 offenses, even when special teams and defense set up the offense

But to answer your question, the teams that have less talent that tend to flank the defensive throw a lot of wide receiver bubble screen screens. I don’t know why we don’t do that more often against boxes.

10 years ago and prior when we had Beathard, Stanzi, Tate, Banks, etc. we had QBs that could make throws 10+ yards down field regularly and we ended up with RBs that could rip off 1000 yards in a season. Ferentz has gotten so risk averse that he'd rather have QBs constantly check down to 2 yard passes than throw downfield. That allows the defense to stack the box and it is all over for our run game unless we have the best RB in the conference paired with a dominant OL.

KF never was a coordinator, right? He was a position coach and head coach. My guess is that means he's really solid on technique, but not great in game scheme?
Yes, I know, he hires people to scheme his O and D for him. He struck gold on the D, but not so much on O.

You still have to be balanced. But yes, we weren’t very creative yesterday but we also got absolute **** QB play. Heck takes us right down the field on our 2nd drive and then throws a terrible pick. Has Diaz wide open on 2 other occasions and misses him. You’ve got to make plays when you have them. Brown with 2 picks and the terrible pass on the final drive. Plays have to be made by your players. It’s another reason we can’t get receivers to come here.

Tony needs to leave and I assume he will......more money to be made somewhere else AND more catches. He needs to prepare for the next level and playing here is NOT the place for him. Hate to say it because I really like him.

I understand keeping the run pass balance which is why running sweeps is also a good idea, the pin and pull type running plays where running backs stretch the play looking for a seam as all it takes is the defense to miss plugging a hole for a nice gain.

And the wide screens to receivers is like a long handoff out in space and Iowa was good with that play with Vandeberg, Smith Marsette, McCarron, we dont use it much now to stay away from the box

Unfortunately you're correct. He's a kid that got sold on being THE guy at his position. An opportunity to showcase himself and be the big fish in the small pond. I was really hoping he would be the catalyst for getting decent receivers to come here. Instead I feel like he might leave and be another Charlie Jones case to signal recruits and transfers NOT to.

So true and we cant blame him. He is blocking, running basically decoy routes, getting open and catching balls. That big catch yesterday was a 7 yard completion that turned into 57.

Well if HEck hits him with those 2 passes that were probably TDs and then gets the 57 yarder in the 2nd half that is a whole highlight reel right there. He would be making 8+ catches a game for many teams.

Iowa should run more between the tackles on second and long (sarcasm). Ferentz does not believe in stretching the field and IMO never has.

That's also the problem. You can make the guy the focus player, and even if the scheme doesn't suck anymore, you've still got to have someone to actually make the throws to him. Until that happens it's going to be hard to get another guy with any real offers from brand name schools to come here instead.

There are a lot of very good QBs at G6 schools also that are auditioning to go to the big leagues, Gronk was one from an FCS former DIIA team. Heck and Hank neither were starters, Hank had 2 starts for a very small sample size.

Was Joe Flacco from Delaware I believe so they are out there.

Why wouldn’t you stack the box?

Iowa might throw the ball past 10 yards once a game
Heck threw it long to Diaz twice yesterday and the throws were way off the mark and then Hank hit the long TD to RVZ which was a very good pass. Enough for me to see.

The ANF guys say that Hank has the stronger arm to throw the 10 yard out or comeback to the far sideline and beat coverage.

There are a shlt ton of good qbs plying in smaller conferences , I watch them regularly and many could be had for fairly cheap price. Kid at Oregon State was found at Mercer and he’s one of the best qbs in the country. Right now there’s a player who can run and throw every bit as good as Brad banks at Austin Peay, Chris Parson. Hand picked by the late Mike leach and a former four star.
someone send his info to Lester. He wouldn’t break the bank.

Agreed, but Iowa does not get him into space except when he gets too close to the water cooler.
That reminds me of the old joke "grampa did you play football? Grampa says yes I played end, guard, and tackle. I sat on the end of the bench, guarded the water cooler, and tackled anyone who shouldnt get close to it"

I have also said that Iowa can find a very good qb with good game experience , a year or two, who has skill and especially some speed and escapability and run game. we see them all the time. Pay them decent money for a year to play on the biggest stage.

Chris Parson is really good, he would have a Chambliss like effect at Iowa. Very smart accurate passer who can run. I would love to see Iowa show some interest in him. Leach valued Decision making and accuracy above all and he thought this kid has it.

i followed this kids recruitment and Leach signed him at Miss State as his first dual threat qb in the air raid. He fell through the cracks after Leach’s death and a coaching change. He’s flying under the radar at a Austin Peay.

What? You didn't like all those Tim Lester 2nd and long off-tackle plays against 7 and 8-man fronts! It's called "establishing the run" according to Lester's offensive philosophy. parlance.

haha, no I didnt, and I think the only reason we did a lot of that is because we were tied or within one score and playing conservative KIRK ball. Geezus, with little time to go we opened it up after getting away from our own 2 yard line with 2 beautiful throws and catches. Minny was playing one high safety most of the game so send two receivers up the hashes, the QB waits for the safety to move or you have two players to throw to.

Sometimes you need to throw to set up the run. And we kinda of did it the second drive then decided to not do it the rest of the game. Ferentz and Lester too stubborn this game as well as isu to do so.

There was a series where we rushed for a first down, then on the next first down ran for 8, setting up second and two….lester calls a pass play..incomplete, end up punting. You don’t stop running until they stop it.

Because they have very little confidence in either QB and were of course thinking we could win 13-10 ala Deacon Hill style. And both QB’s had ample opportunities to make a play and couldn’t. At some point your players have to make plays. And their were plenty available but neither QB could do it.

2nd and 10 calls were beyond bad. Not a huge difference between 3rd and 10 or 3rd and 8. You've put yourself in obvious throwing situation either way. We can't continue to run into a brick wall on 2nd and 10 imo

I heard kurt warner today say " the absolute worst play sequence in football is run, run, pass."

We do that too much.
Hayden got more conservative as he aged.
Threw 68 passes at smu one time.
But later at Iowa the 3rd and long draw play became common.
The cliche is that you do not abandon the run even when it fails early but for Iowa it just seems like we stick to it,it never kicks in, we get behind, then they know we're passing.
Just frustrated.
