You could have 5 All-Americans on the OL they're not going to be able to block 8-9 guys. Our lack of any semblance of a downfield passing game makes it easy for opposing Ds to stack against the run and shut our run game down. ISU did it. Minney did it. Others I'm sure will follow.
There's more to it than throwing the ball more than 15 yards down the field on 1st or 2nd down..........

You have to have a run counter to their defensive flow, and you have to be willing to use it until they get out of their gameplan, rather than treating it like a trick play like Ferentz does.

You have to have a blitz beater where you're getting the ball out of your hands in 2.5 seconds so they don't just load up and bring pressure the whole game like Wisconsin did against USC.

You can't do what Iowa has done in the past and know the blitz is coming and still run our basic route trees 10-20 yards down the field with everyone somehow blanketed despite them rushing 6 or 7...............................🙃

It's not just our "scheme". It's the lack of imagination as it pertains to taking what the defense gives you.

Very good points. I watched some of Lester's W Mich game video and he had some formations with 2 running backs in the backfield, fake to one and the other would slant out for a pass and if they were open the would make the pass and gain good yards. The hawks need to outflank the loaded box. And I have been screaming for counter plays since O'keefe was OC.

And not sure you read my post about how Purdue lined up offensively in their recent game against Minny. But Purdue was in wide spread formations with 4 receivers and Minny had only 6 in the box.

Not sure why the hawk coaches didnt spread the field once they saw what Minny was doing loading the box

The run game doesn't fool anybody. When the Hawks have a fast back, like a Goodson or a Johnson, the 6 yard gain turns into a 15-20 yard gain.

We don't need to go 4 wide like Purdue.

We had the counters. I just think the staff clenched their butts and weren't willing to go back to those counters more than once a half.......................

Again, a QB read option is a f***ing trick play to Kirk Ferentz in 2026.

How long did Lester last at WM? I'm guessing his teams turned the ball over a lot more than Ferentz likes. Ferentz philosophy has produced winning for 27 years. Lester couldn't even last half a decade.

Not only that, but where'd our fullbacks disappear to?

Our o line is not overrated. And yes, we have 2 1st round picks. We’re not creative enough with the running game plain and simple.
To my untrained eye, the right side of the line seemed overwhelmed much of the game and it wasn't just on running plays.

We or pro style teams only use a fullback when under center. To replace the fullback we often have a TEnd who is lined up off the LOS shift into the backfield. I would like us to go 4 wide or 5 wide like Purdue did to Minny and see what we can do against Wisky

I'm sure Dotzler is a good kid, but his play this year has been horrible. He's the weak link on the line and it's not even close. His play has been killing us all year against Power 5 teams.

when you are on defense & there's no threat of the opposing team shredding you downfield it makes it very easy & fun to play against. plus as the previous poster said you can almost never block 8 or 9 guys with 5 or 6 oline/te/fb, played against a few teams like this in my day & when you aren't worried about them throwing on you you can just play. also goes the other way when a team can't run & they have to throw you can just pin your ears back & attack! makes it a fun game for the guys on defense!!

Regarding the Spread type offense, isn't it easier on Olinemen?
Quick developing plays and less time needed to sustain blocks?
Heard that is part of why it was invented; reduces the need for Behemoths, Leviathans, and Nephilim much like the Wishbone back in the day.
Could be wrong.
