Former UT player Ollie Lane: UT was better team; only lost b/c of mistakes

He clapped back at Beamer for saying we were the better team in 2022 and this past Saturday. He said UT was obviously the superior thing but only lost b/c of failed execution and not making a handful of plays.

Uh...well....duh.

Teams lose all the time because of failed execution and not making a handful of plays.

This has always been a funny argument to me: "We only lost because we didn't play well!"

TN didn't give the game away. They had a 24 - 17 lead with minutes to play. If they make the plays, they win.
SC took the game because they made two game changing plays. Sellers TD certainly was not a gimme as he fought through three TN players trying to stop him. Stewart dominated the TN OLineman trying to block him and caused the fumble. Orsan kicked a no doubt 48yd FG which would have been good from 55yds. In the last few minutes TN gave SC nothing, they took it!

Objectively, I can understand. If the table were turned, our fans would likely be feeling the same as UT fans. Save for a couple of dumb penalties, they would probably have won. Our history is littered with "if only we would have...." games.

BUT, those are the breaks. They failed to put us away when they had the chance and Sellers and Stewart made them pay.

Just as big as the untimely penalties, UT totally botched a late-game 4th down play that led to our tying TD. If they convert there, they probably end up kicking a FG to make a 10-point game late and put it out of reach. They just botched the play.

It was just that kind of game. It was a tight contest meaning that it was going to come down to the little things.

I agree with him. It was there for the taking. But them's the breaks. You gotta execute. When they should have been salting the game away, the QB and the RB ran two different plays. And their defense had a chance to stop the tie, and they failed. They were the better team most of the game except when it mattered most.

That's literally any close game. One team makes a handful of plays, the other doesn't. It's a stupid argument, especially in a game like this where the teams are pretty evenly matched. Vegas favored USC for a reason.

I agree with you, SC took the game away from UT. I attented ETSU and everyone in the state of Tenn. pulls for UT. And to hear their fans, radio announcers, etc. UT has never lost a football game in the history of the school. They got cheated out of the games they lost or something strange happened like a puff of wind blocked a FG or something crazy like that.

And one team got big plays out of some of their playmakers that made the difference.

Does UTen have a Sellers, Stewart or Orban?

I mean Tennessee most likely will have a better season at the end of the day. Who has the better team, you could probably make an argument for both. Aside from the last minute magic, I thought they looked more sound throughout the game. At the end of the day, it’s a finite season and the margin for error is barely there. A loss is a loss. Hopefully it keeps Tennessee out of the playoffs.

No. A game is 60 minutes. We botched many things to blow that big lead in the 1st half.

For example: Swain hands them a TD. Hands them 15yds and midfield and they score. And we lose our best DB for the game.

We should have been up 10 at the half.

And that's just one game.

Let's go back to the UK and MsST games for a waterloo of botching.

That's football.

Scoreboard!

Wow, what a non-story.

Breaking news: most if not all former Carolina players probably believe the better team won last Saturday too.

I'd argue we were the better team and the stats proved it, we forced 2 turnovers (1 on downs) to their 1, we had more total yards on offense, we forced more punts on defense, we held them to a lower yards per rush than us, the only category they were better in was time of possession but that didnt result in more points.

Mistakes, particularly self-inflicted, can result in lost ball games.
Claiming to have won the game if those mistakes had not occurred is foolish and misguided but many have done so.
Thinking you are better than the outcome can lead to failure to correct the mistakes resulting in more losses.
Better to own up to the loss and fix the mistakes.

The biggest play of the game and Bishop had to sit. Believe Daniels got the tackle. He is as responsible for that win as Sellers,Stewart, and Orsan.
