Maryville enters the season as the reigning Great Lakes Valley Conference champion after posting a school-record 25-7 overall mark and 16-4 conference record in 2025-26.

The Saints earned their second NCAA Division II Tournament berth in program history and were picked to repeat as GLVC champions in the league’s preseason coaches’ poll.

Maryville has defeated three NCAA Division I opponents in exhibition play over the past four seasons under head coach Brita Hand. The Saints defeated Saint Louis, 78-70, in 2022, SIU Edwardsville, 81-66, in 2024, and Missouri, 90-84, in overtime in 2025

I like the hawks 102-67

It'll be interesting how they approach the matchup. I just took a quick peak at Maryville's roster. Their three tallest players are 6'1", and two of them are freshmen. If Iowa just wants to come out and win at all costs and run up the score, they can just dump it into the post repeatedly. My guess is that Jan would rather see everyone get involved though.

I have to temper my expectations after a game like this. If we dominate, some of our players will look so impressive, but that is against a team that is slower, smaller, and has less potential. So player X has a career night, but then only gets cleanup minutes in conference play. "She played so well at the start of the season!"

That said, my seventh grade grandkid and I are so pumped to be back in Carver Hawkeye!

Maryville made 11 3's in the 2nd half vs Missouri. Tigers were 3-30 for the game on 3's.

Good idea. Don't go crazy when Layla goes off for 15 while playing against someone 4 inches shorter and 30 pounds lighter than she is. This doesn't happen against P4 opponents. I'll be more interested in how she looks on the defensive end and how she moves around the court. That's where we need her to be effective this year.

And hopefully her FT stroke has been something she has improved.

I know look at the competition. But I am watching the way players are comfortable in their abilities and they appear to be playing within their skills. Not forcing things. The hawk returners all appear to have upped their game a bit, and the new folks are pretty good. The team as a whole look much more athletic. I know exhibition game against an out-classed opponent, but early returns are positive. JMO today.
