Carnegie is impressive. She can flat score, defends, can handle the point and has excellent vision. Huge upgrade in the backcourt.
Woliczko is as versatile as advertised. Faison is pleasant surprise.
Hayes is the only big question mark. Woliczko may have play some 5 and go small, when the match up allows it.
All of this is of the understanding that they are playing Marysville. Still, 97 points in 3 quarters?

Not a lot to complain about. Some sloppy 3 point defense but this is an offensive juggernaut, and might be the deepest team Iowa women's basketball has ever had. With the exception of the post, you see very little drop off with the reserves coming in. Every other position looks upgraded from last year.

Side note. Watching Wisconsin to see how teagan and deal looked. Teagan 3 for 3 3's in first half. Other than one early game in her career at iowa she couldn't buy a 3. Weird. Glad to see her do well though. Deal has looked decent

Iowa should destroy Wisconsin

True she never got her game together at Iowa after her early game, then injuries, and then probably forcing things. I really thought she might be a big asset early on her career.

Think we trashed a half-way decent team by ~60 pts.
From what I can tell so far, JJ switched out a bunch of one-hit wonders (for lack of a better term) for a very versatile and aggressive clan.

Jan has said this years team is far more competitive in regard to getting after each other in practice than last years team. IMO that should help in the mental toughness department.

I would sometime like to see stats on how common it is for injured players to hit the portal. It has to be very tough mentally to be on a certain trajectory, get injured, and then see their direct competition pass them by bc they are getting their reps while they are recovering.

She could continue the grind here with a now even more competitive squad, or start fresh at a program closer to home that will still earn her a very good degree.

Very close, within 10 miles of Kohl Center. Even closer than Stremlow's hometown.

Plus her longtime boyfriend from back home in Mcfarland was killed in a car accident back in March, during the NCAA tournament. I think she really needed a fresh start back closer to home. Wish her well......

Flala, you and i are the only ones apparently worried about the 5 position. I got smoked pretty good saying that McKenna might have to play some 5. I understand how people don’t think that’s ideal but i believe it may be a possibility.

Against Maryville, the first nine players ranged from Houston's 18 minutes to Wright's 27. That's close to 9 x 20 minutes equaling 180 of 200 available. Against average teams, I could see that approach paying off, keeping everyone fresh. Big games will mean big minutes from the big players. Hopefully all will step up when called.

I believe that distribution of minutes will be one of the biggest challenges for the Iowa coaches. Journey Houston averaged 16 mpg last season with several 20+ games down the stretch.

It’s a big asset to have a player like Houston come off the bench but, absent injuries, it seems like her mpg will decrease.

You're not the only ones and it's possible she might play some 5 depending on Layla's play and the opponent. If McKenna can be more effective in relief of Ava, then she could take some of those minutes.

And it's not only about Woliczko being effective. I think that move would also keep Journey (or another player) on the court, which may be overall more effective minutes than a rotation with Hays.

I'm guessing this is something they are trying to figure out.

I think maybe we should play some games before people decide that Layla can't help play some solid minutes. Will there be teams who go small, where playing MW in the post makes sense. Sure. There will still be games where we need Layla's size, and there's no reason to be writing her off at this point.

Hays is going to be needed, the season is a grind and Layla being willing to get beat up down low takes the physical pounding off teammates who dont have her frame. Im highly appreciative of what she brings to the team that doesn't necessarily show in the box score.

Not writing her off. Just suggesting the coaching staff is likely to explore their options. However, I'm not yet convinced Hays is a strong wall. We'll see.
