I bounced around a lot of names. Bo Jackson, Maravich, KiJana, Greg Oden, and others, but I can't think of anyone who got a worse deal than she did:

Maravich was amazingly unlucky, but was never stabbed or attacked.

* Born w/ only one ventricle
* Had to move constantly while young
* Played on lousy teams his whole life
* No 3-point line (except last season)
* 2 torn up knees that could have been fixed in 6 weeks today
* Predicted his own death

Pete Maravich died at age 40. His son, Josh, died when he was 42. 😞

My serious answer would be that it's hard to settle on anyone specifically. There are countless stories of athletes having careers shortened by factors which were out of there control. Is a potentially stratospheric Hall of Fame career shortened by injury while still living a long life (Bo) any more or less unlucky than an otherwise average player who suffered a life ending medical condition at age 26 (Piccolo)??

My unserious answer is Rocco Becht. He's been unlucky. He said so himself.

Unlucky for sure but at least she had a career - 9 GS wins (in only three years) before the incident. I’d say someone like Andy Roddick who had the misfortune to play at the same time as Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic. Guess that goes for all men’s players for a twenty year period or so…any other twenty year stretch and he wins half a dozen GS’s.

I don't remember Roddick getting STABBED in the back in the middle of a match though.

After more thought, I've come up with a couple of people more NFLers who were potential Hall of Famers (we'll never know) who had both their lives and their careers cut short due to tragic, unlucky events.
  • Ernie Davis. 1961 Heisman Trophy winner and first round pick of the Cleveland Brown. Tragically died of leukemia at age 23 before ever playing an NFL game.
  • Joe Delaney. 1981 second round pick of the Kansas City Chiefs. 1981 Rookie of the Year with 1,121 yards rushing and 4.8 yards per attempt. His 1982 season was a shortened by an eye injury and the players' strike. He died during the off season at age 24 while trying to rescue some drowning kids who were swimming in a place where swimming was prohibited, despite the fact he was unable to swim himself.

Not looking for an argument here, but unlucky? Bias made his own bed. Sad story, sure, a great great player, I mean no disrespect here. RIP.

KiJana, Aaron Harris, Journey Brown were definitely unlucky.

Me, I’m the luckiest SOB alive.

Very unfortunate, but it became a favorite Halloween costume that fall. My GF at the time dressed up in her cute tennis gear with a knife in her back. She did have the grunt down o_O

I always think about the curse of the PSU running backs in the NFL. Lost Enis, Carter, Thomas (to an extent) all due to injury.
