My friend......in this trying year, I thought the team played a little better coming out of the bye week. By no means did we play like world beaters. We are still making a lot of mistakes. But it was certainly better than getting worse. Even if it was lowly Purdue. Its as simple as that. It certainly didn't convince me that we will win any or all of our remaining games.
The schedule is room service for 2 wins. Rutgers and Maryland. We can acknowledge that a trip to the left coast is challenging, the Washington team is not. Look at standings and statistics. It's hard to argue that PSU (agree with you it's been a challenging year) should not win 3. As it stands today, Minnesota has a top 6 conference team. That would be in my definition a worthy opponent in this very painful year.

With the parity that exists, losing transfers and recruits and not much left in the portal at the time of the coaching hire, injury to a key offensive and defensive player, some close losses, we aren't really that far away from a playoff team going forward. Stronger recruiting and portal classes with the staff now having full windows, bringing back the good players, and we'll be right there going forward, in spite of tougher schedules and especially because of the 24 team playoff environment.

Holy crap. I cannot believe this. Somehow PSU is #34 in the current Sagarin ratings after yesterday's results and Va Tech is #47. How is this possible? Anyone?

Their SOS is like 100 with losses to Cal and Pitt
We'd be favored to beat them
I know people hate this statement--we don't have a "bad loss" or a quality win. Va Tech has 2 bad losses without a quality win

I see that #92 DT Siale Taupaki never did re-enter the game after getting a 15yd penalty for throwing down the PU RB.

That is an encouraging sign of disciplinarian coaching.

Thanks. I see the reason now. The algorithms aren't impressed with wins over 0-9 VMI, 2-7 ODU, 2-6 Maryland, 4-4 BC, 2-6 Ga Tech, and 5-3 Clemson.

They will get a chance to impress though with upcoming games at SMU and Miami, and you just know CJF will have them fired up and ready to go for those big games.

But those same algorithms are oh so impressed with two less wins by PSU to equally bad or worse teams LMFAO.

No one said we have good wins--we just don't have bad losses like they do
You can disagree with the formula but you can't disagree with the explanation of it.

So full of crap as per usual - scUM in reality is a 4-loss team (2-3 in b1g) with a loss to a MAC team without this bushleague's cheating for Pete's sake. Acting like Wisconsin is a good team "is adoreable" Load-O. Northwestern is nothing more than a middling team - again, "adoreable" that you believe it's an awesome loss LMFAO. The only reason VT is ranked so low is because the algorithm relies heavily on recent irrelevant past performance in this era of Absolute & Unlimited Free Agency for it's starting ranking of the year moron - given that VT was a combined 9-14 the two seasons prior to this year, they began the season ranked extremely low. This reliance on irrelevant past performance rather than just this year's performance continues to explain the ranking - your notion that losing to bad and mediocre teams 2x more than another teams can lead to a much better ranking is bs and NOT the primary reason VT's Saragin Ranking is so low. VT's Ranking started low despite this year's team is performing far better than last year's team - they started last year 2-5 on their way to a 3-9 season moron. VT is off to their best start through 8 games (6-2) in almost a decade (since 2017 to be precise), so ranking them consistent with their recent past MORE HEAVILY than this year's performance is utterly dumb and useless in this age of Absolute & Unlimited Free Agency Professional CFB (was an acceptable algorithm in the old world of true CFB where players were restricted from leaving), but your supposed explanation is nothing of sort and complete bs which is fairly typical for the neverending wrong crap made up bs that spews from Load-O The Great, legend in his own mind.

Didn't need that many words to say you know nothing about the calculation

I get it. I was totally impressed with Franklin Tech's 70 point win over a now 0-9 FCS VMI that later gave up 648 yards of offense to Mercer. Should have put them in the top-10, but those stupid biased algorithms just can't recognize the greatness. Fight the good fight, Brother. Never say in 100 words what you can say with 10,000 words, and paragraphs totally suck.

Here is where the Sagarin Predictor (Jeff's best ranking, and the only good rating that includes 1AA teams to get all opponents) ranks every team that we've both played...

PSU
USC - 14th
at Northwestern - 26th
at Michigan - 29th
Wisconsin - 31st
Purdue - 50th
at Temple - 119th
Marshall - 123rd
Buffalo - 139th

Virginia Tech
Pitt - 40th
at Clemson - 44th
at Maryland - 70th
Georgia Tech - 74th
at Boston College - 80th
at California - 82nd
Old Dominion - 143rd
VMI - 261st

That right there tells you why power ratings might not be more impressed with VT than PSU, even though they have a higher number in the "W" column.
