Schlabaugh and the other college fb analyst on ESPN today agreed on only one bowl projection:

Iowa vs LSU on jan 2 in citrus bowl

Would that be better than making the playoffs as a #11 seed and playing Notre Dame in South bend on dec 18?

Personally, it is a close call as I like having that last game on new years weekend.

LSU might be a comparable opponent to ND
Beating kiffin would be fun
Season ending on dec 18 would suck.

No. The goal is the playoff.

I bet Iowa is going to be much higher in the first playoff rankings than everyone thinks. They'll probably come in around 17 or 16. We need to win out and hope we can get all the way to a #8 seed so we get a first round playoff game at home.

I wonder how fan support will be next year if we are 5-3 and out of contention on Nov 1st?
I know attendance is starting to wan already at some real football schools this year as they fall out of contention.

Next year it will be a clear pass/fail test on a team's seasons...playoff or consider firing your coach...2 or 3 seasons without playoff - coach gawn....NFL mentality takes over.

I'll root for them in any bowl, but there's no comparison between that and having a shot in the playoff. If they go to the 24 team deal they should get in most years unless we really fall off.

I would like to see the hawks in the playoffs meaning they go 10-2, next it would be great to have a first playoff game at Kinnick as the old structure could see something new, next a win and a 2nd playoff game or more would be awesome, then lastly the Citrus or other top bowl game. we shall see

How would we be out of a 24 team playoff at 5-3??

And we have an opportunity to bring back all 11 starters on offense and 9 of 11 on defense plus all our specialists. Barring catastrophic injury, I highly doubt we’ll be 5-3 next year.

Not happening. There is no NT trophy coming to Iowa City. Hank is good he is not great and that's what you need, you need a great QB. You need a Heisman trophy type QB. And about 3 other first rounders to have a chance.
Jan 2 vs LSU would be great.
Not to say that it will or won’t happen by any means, but I will say there is really no juggernaut out there this year that’s unbeatable.

That’s a good point. It would suck if you were a good team that peaked late in the year but had 3 early tough losses. Eliminated from the playoffs, fans lost interest but you are good enough to be in the top 12.

LSU would likely have many guys bow out of game.
Probably. And the playoffs are of course the bigger reward.

Still, New Year's Eve at Mickey World would be fun if uber expensive. And Dec. 30-Jan. 3 in Orlando would be a lot warmer than where 99.9% of posters on this board live.

The chance of this team winning a Natty is less than 1% BUT the whole point of sports is to compete and to TRY. I would love the hawks to get into the CFP and get a win and move on. But as you say Citrus Bowl would be great

Dotzler is 5th year out of 5 years so can he come back on some exemption?

But, as you say, if everyone comes back who can come back we should be better. We dont know about Moulton and his injury and being a short shelf life running back he might be smart to declare for the draft.

And I really think KF will want to coach next year's team with all these good players he likes and cares for, more crying next year probably, hahaha, he gets emotional

Yeah, playoff teams will find a way to win one of those 3 early losses you speak of. I thought Iowa might lose all of Mich, OSU, Wash this year based on those teams recent history. I thought we might catch Mich early with a new system and new coach etc but it also turns out they were a bit of a mess and we won 2 of 3.

Living in Orlando, I always wanted Citrus or Outback/Reliaquest. Now, having just moved to NC, it's all about the Duke's Mayo Bowl for me! 🤣

The playoffs would be better but beating LSU would be a good thing. We've done it before.

Animal Kingdom! I swear the ride over the Nile crocodiles they are just looking up at me as lunch. "Just lean a little farther out friend, now a little farther, see if you can drop that popcorn into my jaws. Reach a little closer..."
