Are there any Schiano defenders left?

My initial anger (rage, actually) at the UMass debacle, followed by the giveaway to BC has faded a bit. I wonder what the long term affects of this whole "Fire the Coach" stuff will have on the future of the program. I can see the argument for getting rid of GS. And I sorta agree with it.
But I've been dealing with the whole "Rutgers will never be able to roll with the BIG BOYS" crap since Dick Anderson replaced Frank Burns. Mostly from New Jersey college football fans who have zero respect for Rutgers and root for one of the Big Boys. Schiano was the only one who shut them up for a while.
I've seen Rutgers hire any number of head football coaches since Anderson. And it doesn't exactly make me optimistic about the next hire. I have a tough time answering the critics I talk to when they ask what quality coach would wanna come to this loser career-killing program. Or what this whole "Fire Schiano" stuff will do to recruiting this year....freshmen or transfers.
Perhaps if/when it happens and GS is replaced I'll regain some optimism about the future of this program. But I wouldn't place any bets on it right now. Unless we can recruit Mark Cuban, of course.

let’s be serious, there is little reason to be optimistic whether he’s fired or not. The only reason to fire him is that he’s cratered and there doesn’t seem to be any defensive coaches that want to coach for him. It’s not leaving us much choice. If he was going on merrily at the usual 6-6, 7-5, etc, the argument to replace him would be much weaker.

Paying 28 million to a fire a coaching staff when the athletic department lost a record 75 million last year and has blown over half a billion since 2014 and replace him with a new coach that at best would go 7-5 when the old coach is more then capable of doing that seems silly to me.

basically we won't get the return on investment from firing Greg and hiring a new staff. Our fan base is small and from a revenue and cost perspective it makes no sense.
Blame Hobbs for the bad extension

If the argument is "well, RU Athletics lost half a billion dollars that we need to recoup" then just shut down the whole department. Full stop.

And that's what a self-proclaimed superfan says? Holy sheep ****.

Seriously folks, Rutgers fans are not cut out for this and need to get in or get out. Going back to playing grabass with Lehigh, Lafayette, and waiting for the big game against Colgate doesn't get that money back. But it gets the stadium just as empty with players just as hapless.

The truth is our fan base doesn't support the program like other BIG fan bases do so we shouldn't blow up our finances to take a gamble on a new coach. What is realistic expectations for a new coach with the worst facilities and bottom 4 NIL in league. At best they go 7-5 and back to pinstripe.

for one I think Greg is capable of getting us back to the pinstripe. And at the very least don't think it's worth it to blow up our deficit to get to 7 wins at best.

I would give Greg 1 more year. Work down the buyout. And then move on if we don't see results.

Whether or not firing the fraud will lead to reasonable and modest success isn’t the key question. No hires are certain winners.

The key question is whether the university aspires to having a competitive Big10 football program or if it’s just in the conference for the visibility and the money and is satisfied with a sub .300 conference win rate over 7 years.

If the goal is the former he needs to be fired yesterday. Every sunrise he’s still the HC shows that’s not the goal.

What makes you think Greg is capable of going 7-5? If that were the case no one would be wanting him fired..

I think you just answered OP's question

The coach is set to clinch his 14th losing conference record in 18 seasons at Rutgers this weekend. Allowing him the opportunity to come anywhere near that number shows the university simply is not committed to competing in the Big Ten.

18 years of proof is enough. GS is not a winning coach particularly against the P4.

And it’s not fair to bring up Anderson or Graber who has no support, worse facilities, worse conference to recruit out of, way way less money spent on assistants , etc. we really have no idea how either would do in this era.

We know GS is better than Ash. So what?

IU never had success until they got Cigs and he won in year 1 with low cost transfers from JMU! He didn’t get the big check until year 2!

But Keli will bring in Brian Kelly AND Lane Kiffin! That offense would average 69 points per game! There surely must be a mysterious billionaire donor that will make this “dream team” happen.

It doesn’t matter if he deserves it or not. He will get another year unless someone wants to write a big check.
If he gets another year. We are serious about big time football. Players will transfer out and who do you will transfer in.

The entire staff will be playing for their jobs next year. Hopefully, they will be motivated. Think GS has to start calling or coaching the D. We need to be more downhill. Getting killed by thousand cuts is painful to watch.

The fanbase have a hard time supporting a losing coach. The longer GS stay the stands will remain empty

I think it's very clear that Rutgers and the alumni are both not willing to put in the resources to be a very successful program. I think the school is more than happy with 6-6 type seasons.
Considering that's the case why fire Greg this year. He can get us back to 6-6. It's not like we're going to go 10-2 next year if only we get rid of Greg. We will still have bottom level NIl and terrible facilities.
And I'm sure the money we spend on buying out Greg and his staff will cause shortages to other programs in our department.

in reality your looking to fire Greg to try and get back to the pinstripe bowl. I just don't think that's worth it. I would wait another year.

The buffoons at nj.scum make it seem like there is nobody willing to vouch for another year of Schiano https://www.nj.com/rutgersfootball/...fans-have-minds-made-up-we-need-a-change.html

I am skeptical. There have to be some people who think he deserves another year. Did they not find a way to interview Al?
Last two years, just total clusterflubs in roster management. He made more sense pre-NIL. Any reticence in letting him go, probably more to do with the financials and depth of the replacement market after last year's free-for-all. Whether this year or next, think the postscript has been written. Just a matter of when.

I'd venture the following are all Schiano defenders:

Mrs. Schiano
Joseph Schiano
Matthew Schiano
Johnathan Schiano

The difference between firing him at end of 2026 season vs. 2027 season is approximately $7M. Schiano continuing into the 2027 season is a Penny Wise Pound Foolish decision. Schiano is dead man walking in 2027. Season tickets revenue will continue to erode along with sponsors and donations. Good luck getting back to the Pinstripe by beating 3 OOC cream puffs and 3 Big Ten teams that are having miserable years. The 2027 In-Conference schedule has very little room for error. If you're a portal player that is from a P4 school how excited are you for signing up to play for a lame duck coach, that has done nothing but lose in front of 30K Rutgers fans? Seriously.

Bring in a new Head Coach and staff, sell it correctly and provide some hope for a fanbase that's lost all hope. Maybe ticket sales doesn't increase (or donations) in the first year, however, with a new start it shouldn't erode as we're seeing today. That will cut into some of the $7M difference. Do nothing and you get the same exact results. Take a risk, make a change and restore some hope for the future. Don't waste another year, along with resources that will be better spent on a new Coach and Staff.

Since Pikiell got another year I figure Schiano also should get another year.
Agree that Pike has not been competitive the last 3 seasons and blew an incredible opportunity with Harper/Ace. That being said, at least he had a stretch of 3 seasons where Rutgers basketball played competitively in the B1G and won games against ranked teams and teams with winning records. Schiano has achieved none of that. No ranked wins and only 2 wins against B1G teams that finished with winning records in almost 7 seasons. Their track records are for the most part day and night. I'm not a huge Pike fan as a basketball coach as I believe the game has passed him by and he's been slow to adjust. However, Schiano is a disaster.

No we do not have bottom level NIL. We are low middle of B1G and more than many ACC, B12, and G6 teams who are way better than we

We have had 30 losing conference records in 36 seasons total since joining the Big East. Those are not the numbers of an athletic department that takes winning seriously. It is the numbers of a department that consistently delivers mediocrity with very little expectations otherwise, because mediocrity is acceptable. Even in this thread there are people that are conditioned to be perfectly fine with essentially conceding next season too with a lame duck Schiano in a program tailspin if it saves buyout money. That is the behavior of acceptable mediocrity

And there will be people that wonder why we don't have an engaged fan and donor base.

And don’t forget that he never beat BC, VT or Miami the first time around … had they not left, would he have had any winning seasons at all ?
