I don't watch anywhere near the amount of college football games as I used to as I feel the sport has proliferated to a who's who of money spenders\money grabbers and not the game I grew up watching. The question I have is this: when I watch a game now the announcers are mushmouthed loud mouths, trying to top each other and show how articulate they are while demonstrating they did nothing with their education while in school. I grew up watching\enjoying Keith Jackson, Brent Musberger, Curt Gowdy etc (showing my age now 😂😂😂) and trying to listen to games now is aggravating. Thoughts?

I mute even PSU games and play Supertramp or Mick Taylor Stones. If there is some call to be explained, or something I really need to hear, then I'll hit the remote.

There are about 10 or so college announcer seats in the entire country. It amazes me you all discount the guys who score those seats. I’m guessing they worked their asses off to win those spots.

I didn't realize there were only 10 college announcer seats? Seems there are more than 10 college games aired, do these 10 announcers jet from game to game?

Of course but you’re not criticizing the tools who called the Harvard game yesterday.

I watched a bit of the Florida-Georgia game yesterday, it sounded like Kirk Herbstreit and whoever the PxP guy is (can't recall the name at the moment). Can't stand Herbie. Glad I didn't care much about the game. Then there was Fox. Whatever the 3:30 game was, the crowd noise was overwhelming my rear surround speakers (funny, not a problem with CBS or ABC so much, hmm) although the announcers were full blast. Only reason I switched on these games is because it was during my daily workout routine.

We switched to Youtube TV last summer, so last year we had BTN and all the sports networks. This spring, we switched our package to the least expensive one and ditched sports. It's been great - I haven't missed it. I do follow the Penn State games and other scores on Yahoo, but that's about it. CFB and Pro football are fading fast in my rear view mirror. Better things to do.

What is it you don’t like about Herbie? I think the other guy was probably Chris Fowler.

If you included Musberger in the ones that you enjoyed, there is really little that can be said. He was the absolute worst.

The announcers today talk to much and are purveyors of the obvious.

Gus Johnson is the worst.

Unfortunately, I have seen local news in the 45 States I have visited professionally or personal basis. The level of hype and slogans to attract viewers is unheard of and disgusting. I wonder if any of them have even visited a college course in English, Public Speaking, Drama or Debate. The word 'job' should be replaced with 'work', 'have got' is a negative command/demand and 'reporting live' - we know you are not dead.

Two of the worst on the national scene were T. LLamas and Elizabeth Vargas and the many who maintain a speaking part as an additional observer. And - Gus Johnson is terrible - enough said.

At one time, baseball announcers were gifted with insights to be reported, now many just talk to hear themselves positioned for notoriety. They were just one man in the booth, but now everything is two or more who must have their say. Like the announcers on local tv, bantering back and forth .........unlike the God of Local TV - Jim Gardner of Philadelphia. He regularly had 93% market domination during his broadcasts.

I cringe at the use of the English language being used and additionally the 'slanguage' used to attract viewers. Hopefully one day our resistance will be noted and change will happen. Until then ........good luck.

Musberger was bad but I forgave his incompetence after Penn State completed its comeback from 21 points down against Illinois in 1994 and he said I don’t know about the polls but I just saw the best team in the country. Might be the only time he was right.

Oh you're onto it. One guy is describing in a corporate approved tone what YOU are watching, and the semi-articulate ex jock wearing a suit that will be out of style by the end of the game is attempting to tell you what you should have seen. This is my view of too many of the broadcasts. There are some good broadcast teams out there however and no need to mention them. We all pretty much know who they are

Herbie, although pretty good, needs a cup of STFU once in a while

Over the past seven seasons Herbie has had an intrinsic need to whip out the term “physicality” once every broadcast such that it’s now in the broadcasting lexicon …. Likewise he’s been guilty of mis-using the term “prototypical” for years … I hate him for those reasons as much as his gooey leakage of Alma-mater bias

You could also carry it over to referees and coaches. Guys didn't get jobs coaching at the highest level because they don't know what they're doing, but many fans think they are idiots. And the guys refereeing Big Ten football or NFL are the best of the best, yet most think they are terrible.

As @Grant Green likes to point out, male sports culture is a different breed.

Nothing more emotional than the male sports fan. And nostalgia is a hell of a an emotion.

I could never understand the annoyance over announcers, never a big deal if you know the game.
Maybe getting Keith Jackson back in the day meant your team, especially your game was special.
Like game day today, and that's even getting stale.

There are far more games being broadcast, so you have far more broadcasters. I would say the percentage of good vs bad is about the same, but the actual number of bad ones is higher. I also think there’s a bit of nostalgic remembrance going on with some of these broadcasters from the past.

He's also the first person I heard using the word ask as a noun. "Can quarterback Blah Blah drive for a TD with so little time? That's a big ask." I've since heard two or three other people use ask in the same way. Is it a noun? I don't think so but maybe Herbie is doing it so much he's changing the English language.
