“Basketball GOAL” vs “Basketball HOOP”

What would you call the basketball system installed in a driveway? I just mentioned getting a new “basketball goal” to a coworker from Chicago and he had never heard that terminology before. Some light Googling shows that most of the county calls if a “hoop,” but Kentucky, Kansas, Indiana, etc. call it a “goal.”

I also read a distinction between more substantial systems being “goals” (I think of “Goalrilla”) and cheaper portables being “hoops.”

What say you (and where did you grow up and how old are you)?

I always thought the hoop was the rim and net and the goal was the entire structure as a whole.

Most definitely basketball goal. The hoop (a circle) is the rim.

There’s no hoop at all. The overall structure is the “goal”. The thing the ball goes in is the rim.

To be fair, we would say "drive towards the hoop" or "take it to the hoop" as opposed to anything about going towards the goal.
