See the link below. From the article:

”UNIVERSITY PARK, Pa. – Penn State is launching a national search for its next executive vice president and provost. As the chief academic officer for the institution reporting directly to the president, the provost works with deans, chancellors, faculty, and staff across the University and helps set and lead academic priorities, uphold research and teaching excellence, support access and affordability, and advance the land-grant mission.

A search committee has been created to select the best pool of candidates for the position. The search firm of Russell Reynolds Associates, with 47 offices worldwide, has been hired to assist in filling this critical academic leadership position.“

What no Krafty or Franklion on the search committee? System is rigged.
Not to worrry. The search firm will ask each candidate whether he or she knows the definition of "alignment" and is 150% committed to it. Only those answering in the affirmative to both pass "GO."

Don’t forget the most important attribute: 150% commitment to DEIB.

Find it interesting that a school feels it needs to go outside to hire a provost.

The interim provost, Justin Schwartz, the well-respected dean of the College of Engineering, is rumored to be not interested in the permanent job, He'll apparently return to the deanship of Engineering once a new provost is appointed.

Even if an internal candidate is a leading candidate, Penn State is going to post the job externally. That's required protocol. However, I'll be a bit surprised if an internal candidate wins the job.

Posting a job and engaging Russell Reynolds (and paying its retainer) are two vastly different things.

Having no internal candidates for provost says nothing good about PSU.

This guy fits the bill. Won't even have to change a lot of his stationery.

Yes, I thought Schwartz might want to make it permanent.

Don’t know if it holds now, but when I was applying to grad schools way back it was quite noticeable that PSU’s faculty & admin was way more inbred than other schools’ I applied to. Could this look outward be a response to try to rectify that?

PSU is too big to be that inbred. Maybe Dr. Bendapudi doesn't like the internal options. Not good however you cut it.

Provost is one of Dr. Bendapudi's most critical hires. Hopefully comes from an academically reputable university. Otherwise, PSU continues to fall in this area.

I doubt if anyone on this message board has a clue of who should fill this position.

That is absolute nonsense. Not looking outside, even if you have someone inside, says nothing good about PSU.

Really? Hiring of a provost from the outside is generally a tool to attract well-regarded faculty. Ordinarily, that's fine. Downside is that the hire often doesn't have the administrative skills or experience for the job and lacks familiarity with the institution (though it's not uncommon to see the hire having previously been with the school). Then there is the small matter of PSU running nine-figure annual deficits and imposing a hiring freeze. Small potatoes, right? And some wonder why Harrisburg doesn't write blank checks when appropriations time comes around.

These issues are commonplace for what executive search firms encounter routinely and successfully deal with. That’s why you employ them.

If PSu has to go outside to fill the position, of course, it should employ a search firm. Question is why does PSU have to go outside?
