The interim provost, Justin Schwartz, the well-respected dean of the College of Engineering, is rumored to be not interested in the permanent job, He'll apparently return to the deanship of Engineering once a new provost is appointed.

Even if an internal candidate is a leading candidate, Penn State is going to post the job externally. That's required protocol. However, I'll be a bit surprised if an internal candidate wins the job.

PSU is too big to be that inbred. Maybe Dr. Bendapudi doesn't like the internal options. Not good however you cut it.

Really? Hiring of a provost from the outside is generally a tool to attract well-regarded faculty. Ordinarily, that's fine. Downside is that the hire often doesn't have the administrative skills or experience for the job and lacks familiarity with the institution (though it's not uncommon to see the hire having previously been with the school). Then there is the small matter of PSU running nine-figure annual deficits and imposing a hiring freeze. Small potatoes, right? And some wonder why Harrisburg doesn't write blank checks when appropriations time comes around.
