”Commissioner Rob Manfred is considering a petition filed by Pete Rose's family filed on Jan. 8 to have Major League Baseball's all-time hit leader posthumously removed from baseball's ineligible list, multiple sources with knowledge of the situation told ESPN Saturday.

Jeffrey Lenkov, a Los Angeles lawyer who represented Rose prior to his death at age 83 in late September, said he filed the reinstatement petition after he and Fawn Rose, the oldest daughter of Pete Rose, met with Manfred and MLB spokesman Pat Courtney in the commissioner's office on Dec. 17.

"The Commissioner was respectful, gracious, and actively participated in productive discussions regarding removing Rose from the ineligible list," Lenkov said of the one-hour meeting in the commissioner's office. Lenkov said he is seeking Rose's removal from MLB's banned list for betting on baseball "so that we could seek induction into the National Baseball Hall of Fame, which had long been his desire and is now being sought posthumously by his family."”

Maybe we can get Major League Baseball to honor JoePa. 😞

Rose violated the cardinal rule of baseball and instead of admitting it and falling on his sword and apologizing he arrogantly lied and denied doing so for decades. It was only when he recognized his own mortality that he showed any remorse and contrition. Any “suffering” he may have experienced was self-inflicted.

The man deserves to be in the HOF. He was a better player than most in the Hall.

Rose was a pretty scummy human being. He was my sports idol (or one of them, at least) growing up, but a pretty scummy guy as it turned out. He bet on baseball as a manager and he deservedly was banned from the game for his lifetime. But he was a hell of a baseball player. This was always a pretty easy solution. Put him in the hall of fame for his playing career, keep him banned for his admitted gambling. If the hall remained an establishment of elite players I might be more inclined to keep him out but Harold Baines is in. A good hitter, and that’s it. Rose was a great hitter and actually played in the field as well, all across the field. Put him in.

I concur--that said, gambling permeates all sports these days and the leagues are actively encouraging it--often with gambling areas inside the stadia.
There's a difference between fans and managers and players that affect the outcomes of games. Players and managers still can't bet as it should be. Fans can't figure out the difference.

Yes. And while Rose bet only on his team to win, what’s that say about the games he didn’t bet? It doesn’t take much imagination to think that in such a case his bookie might say to himself, “Pete’s taking a pass on tonight’s game. I think I’ll put some money against the Reds tonight.” And the bookie would always have something to hold over Rose’s head. You can’t have a player or manager compromised like this.
