Moorhead influence here. Basic same offense since Gattis worked with Moorhead at psu.

Maybe he thought he had a chance to be the head coach if Harbaugh went to the NFL.
Exactly. I think that he thought he would be the head coach when Harbaugh went to the NFL and now that Jimmy is back he knows he doesn't have that chance at Michigan. Plus I'm pretty sure he knows that they are not going to be able to beat Ohio State next year and his time to go is now.

Fall-out from Harbaugh flirting with NFL? Lost both his DC and OC. Apparently, Matt Weiss had a lot to do with the running game this past year, so will likely be elevated to OC. Might be more of a loss in recruiting than running the offense Harbaugh wants.

Could also be Cristobal wanting similar to what he had with Moorhead at Oregon. Gattis might have been the play caller, but the Michigan '21 offense was different than his previous years as OC. Miami allows him to be more Spread 3x1 I'd figure.

The money Miami threw at Cristobal, perhaps they offered more for Gattis (or at least enough to walk away from the strange off season that was).

He won the award for Broyle Award for top assistant and likely asked for a raise and was denied. With the lawsuits and all, Michigan doesn't just have money laying around anymore. 😆

Did he interview for any HC gigs?

I'd guess that JH was honest and told them he was considering the NFL......and Gattis got the impression that should JH leave, he was not being considered for HC.
PS Just saw his text......well he has now burned bridges in Alabama and Michigan. LOL......
PS 2 I forgot his little deal with Locksley so count Maryland (and likely not getting Xmas cards from CJF).

I'm not sure but I did read somewhere that Harrbaugh's contract forbid him from interviewing for other jobs. I wonder if Gattis had the same language in his contract.
I believe that he had to let the AD know beforehand, not that he couldn't.

Not all rosy in Ann Arbor.

I have no idea about any behind the scenes things at UM but that's a small time tweet to send to some players on your way out the door. Magnanimity is in short supply nowadays. Maybe he's trying to sway some guys to hit the portal and go to a different UM. IIRC, Gattis hit the road after he was passed over to be Penn State's OC. Apparently Franklin knows Gattis better than any of us.

I think Gattis was more responsible for their success last year than anyone else. I'm on my way over to the MGoBlow board to see the meltdown. Hairball had his one season in the sun and now they're stuck with him even though he'd rather be in the NFL.

It's generally a good idea to take the high road in these matters and keep your mouth shut even if you were wronged. But on the other hand, is it better to just ghost former players and move on to the next job without any explanation after you assured them you were staying as many coaches seem to do?

did anyone save the tweet, cant see it now
I think this is part of it noted above....

In a text to some Michigan players, Josh Gattis said, “Unfortunately the past few weeks has told a different story to me about the very little appreciation I have here from administration. In life I would never advise anyone to be where they are not wanted…”
