1-Score Game Mindset

What is with this BS obsession with the mindset of a 1-score game in conference games from the coaching staff? I just don't get it.

I know Rhule REALLLYYYY wants to be Iowa 2.0 but when you look at the top teams in the conference, the majority of their 1-score games come against each other. The best teams in the conference don't play 1-score games every week, nor do they go into it expecting it to be a 1-score game.

Since 2024 season began, Ohio State, Oregon, Indiana, Penn State, and Michigan have played a combined 56 games against B1G opponents. 20 of those 56 games were 1-score games. Now, there are duplicate games in there (Penn St vs Oregon, Ohio St vs Michigan, etc). When you remove the games played between the 5 teams listed, they played a combined 39 games and only 9 of those games were 1-score games.

Now Nebraska. In that same timeframe, Nebraska played 10 B1G games and 7 were 1-score games. Why is that?
if we get up by 7-10 points they throw it in neutral...and if we get up over 10 points they do onside kicks...big 10 advertising said keep the games nail bitters so folks are watching dumb commercials as long as humanly possible in a shaky mindset

lack of identity
Several times in the last 2 years Rhule has told the team, and the fan base, we're one of the best teams in the nation. Bottom line, he doesn't even believe it, and our lack of ranking and actual wins against good teams prove that.

His own expectations are such to tamp down actual expectations, while at the same time trying to control the narrative. He looks at the season as winning the war of attrition and no further dominance (other than Akron and H Christian) which meets his expected results.

He knows this team lacks the blue-chip talent needed to run people off the field, so he pre-loads the expectations so as not to reveal that we stand to be outclassed on occassion. It also allows him to "gaslight" the fans and press by saying, "See I told you it was going to be a one-score (close) game." It preserves his job security while giving the faithful fans hope.

Two of Rhule's former assistants are head coaches, McGuire at Texas Tech (12-5) and Fran Brown at Syracuse
(13-5). Maybe they're not talking about 1 score games every week.

He’s said so, but the weird thing is he is now denying it. Such a bizarre thesis to even start with.
I'm a believer that all who post are entitled to their opinions, rather I agree or not. I will give him his dues in that he spent a fair amount of time researching the BIG games and arrived at his opinion. If he further broke it down into home games, or 2-3 time zone travel games, or teams coming off byes, etc, could draw even a stronger conclusion to his posting.

What's more funny is that if Nebraska gets blown out. People freak out. And now if the game is closer than expected people just whine that we have another 1 score lose.

Why would a coach who is abysmal in 1-score games at a program that is abysmal in 1-score games want to continue seeking 1-score games? His expectations are every single B1G game being a 1-score game. It’s a loser mindset.

Exactly this - two years ago Michigan destroyed us and it wasn’t a game. I don’t like using single games as a benchmark to a program but it would appear we have gotten better and tightened the gap. Michigan has gotten worse. Either way - we wouldn’t be excited in that case either.

We lose those games simply because of toughness. We can’t get 1 yard when we need it and we can’t stop a team from getting 1 yard when we need to. The other team prevails due to Neb failure to be tough when needed. This is a product of coaching. Anything else being explained is the usual excuse-making

Would you rather our coach come out and say we aren't as talented as the top end teams in our league, and we need to ugly up games and make them one score contests?

We simply don't have many explosive playmakers on either side of the ball.

I love Barney on offense, but while he is electric and fidgety, he doesn't have straight up take it to the house kind of speed. He isn't going to demand double coverage to open things up for others which is needed for an explosive offense. I'd kill to have Trey Palmer back with Raiola.

Defensively, we don't have a single pass rusher. We have to play contain, and rely upon technique and contain with our back end guys doing work well above their pay grade.

We are a well coached team. We will struggle with superior athletes at the top end of our conference. We saw it against Michigan. We make little mistakes in technique and assignments and some dude goes 75 yards off tackle for 6.

Being Iowa-like sucks. Without elite athletes and speed, it is very hard to beat those with numerous players with elite athletes and speed.
