it sounds crazy I know but here me out. I start by saying this, if you think UNC still deserves a 1-seed, how did we not bump them out last night? About a month ago I mentioned how putting our resumes side by side would lead one to believe that Duke actually had the better resume, not UNC. It wasn't a big deal back then as there were still plenty of games to be played. Well now it's up for debate. Do I think UNC is worthy of a 1-seed, yes. Therefore I must make a case for Duke leap frogging them with a win tonight.
Regular season champ vs ACC tournament champ: on one hand the regular season champ is made up of a season worth of games and not just one weekend. Some would say it's a better indicator of cream rising to the top. On the other hand look at the unbalanced schedules with having such a large conference. Duke had to play every single top ACC team on the road this year. We had our struggles but we also came away with very impressive wins, see Notre Dame and Virginia. Additionally the ACC tournament is all played on a neutral court as is the NCAA tournament and it's a win and move on lose and go home style as is the NCAA tournament. I would argue that in the very least it's a tie
Overall Record: if Duke wins tonight they finish the regular season 27-8. With the loss last night UNC finished at 27-7. A half game difference.
Good Wins/Bad Losses: obviously the Nc St loss sticks out like a sore thumb. But look at our overall body of work and look at our wins. @ND @virginia FSU UNC Florida Mich St even Rhode Island and then tournament wins against Louisville UNC and Nd. You take a look at UNC's resume which is compiled of beating people up on their home court and you can't honestly say that their resume matches up with ours.
So there you have it. Similar overall records, equal amount of championships whether regular season or conference tournament and a resume comparison where ours stacks up much better than theirs IMO. It sounds crazy I know, but if you argue that UNC is still a 1-seed I would argue that we are playing tonight to leap frog them.
