Makes sense why yall are on the Free Forum. Seems about right.

Anyways. I think it's an AWESOME idea if you have the means to contribute so we can lock in some quality players in all sports.

They can take their Attitude of disloyalty,
Buyouts, fancy Cars, and all the rest of it straight to Hades in a handbasket. I don't care if they ever win again. We would all be better off investing every penny of this $ into people who deserve it and make a difference in the world.

I'm certain that the magnanimity of your motive will be reflected in the generosity of your contribution, some of which will be undoubtedly expended by the beneficiaries at other locations. But it's your money - until it's theirs.

If you haven't noticed, the free section over here is kind of like 4-chan. Not the most productive place to be...

I'll give to St Judes first ( which I do annually) to help save a kid from cancer. Why? I cannot imagine the helplessness of a parent or grandparent watching their child or grandchild going through that, wishing there was some way you could trade places with him or her, but can't.

I don't have this situation because I'm retired. I find it incredulous that fans who have young families to support are asked to fund 18,19. 20 year-olds. If money is that important to these teenagers, then try out for the NFL or some other pro team or even a semi-pro team. Is there an age limit in the pros? I don't know.

I don't mean to discourage fans with young families from donating to GT. Do what you feel comfortable doing or like to do. This is America. It's a free country. Do as you please. God Bless you. I'm at the stage of life where I can easily afford to contribute. But, I won't. It's not that important to me. And I don't get enough of a thrill winning a darn football game to justify contributing. But, that's me.

I can’t imagine it making sense for anyone at any stage of life to pay a player to play and then to turn around and have to pay to watch that player pay.

I can imagine if the Panthers sent out a letter asking their fans to help them pay the players that fans would drop those letters straight in the trash.

Not nearly what they cost.

I donate to my grandchildren’s college funds every month. Every spare nickel I have goes to that.

College football was never supposed to be what it is now. They left me, I didn’t leave them.

I’m still a diehard Gamecock but just don’t expect me to hire the talent

Win first.
That comment reminds me of when Jim Carlen was a first year coach and was going around to the donors asking for support. When he asked for support he was met with a "Coach , you win 6 games this year and I will back you ". Carlen responded with "If I win 6 games this year I won't need you ".

I can't think of any other industry where fans/consumers are asked to help pay the salaries of the workers and then have to turn around and pay for the product/service as well. I can't think of any other scenario where fans/consumers would even consider such an absurd notion.

But, somehow, some folks seem to think it makes perfect sense with college football. Some even present it as a duty.

Just absurd.

It is the scam to end all scams. "Just give us more money and we can compete for championships!!!" It's a total con, but many are buying it hook, line and sinker.

... and we have been hearing money will fix our ills ever since. And now we hear it really will take money to fix our ills. That said, I can see how a younger generation may be more inclined to buy into that right away... Ill wait.

You all forgive me for diverting this thread. I just want to comment that I really liked Jim Carlen. I realize his personality was abrasive and rubbed some people the wrong way. But he was a heck of a good football coach. The only negative about him in my eyes was that he did not beat Clemson enough. Yeah, he had a private affair that was not good. I acknowledge that. But, he was railroaded by Jim Holderman.

I have figured out how this works. I go to work every day so I can earn money to pay for my house, cars, food, utilities, clothes, gas, insurance, tuition for my kids and room and board for my kids in college and also put some aside so I can hopefully retire one day before I die. Now, I need to give money to a college kid I don't know and will probably never meet who already has tuition, room, board and a stipend to cover other expenses paid for so he can drive a high end luxury vehicle, live in a luxury apartment or condo and put tens of thousands of dollars aside for his future every month. On top of paying for this college kid to live the life of a very rich person, I should donate money to the athletic association and pay for tickets to see the college kid play football so the football coach can make more money in one year than I will probably make in my lifetime. In return, I get to be happy when the team wins a game and very happy if they ever win a championship of some sort.

I can't imagine anyone thinking this is not a good deal and a logical thing to do.

Carlen was his own worst enemy. If he had watched his mouth, he probably would have provided 20 more years of solid success for the football program, avoiding the debacle Woods/Scott era.

It wasn't Holderman alone. It took more than he to oust Carlen. Remember, the press had already turned on him.

I really thought he was a fine coach. Being a straight shooter is good. Shooting at people all the time is not so good.

It's simple. The current scape of NIL sucks ***. I agree. But I also agree that if we want to compete, we have to play the game. I think it's a ridiculous premise, and I won't donate forever. If some rule or legistation doesn't come down, I'll take my money and spend it on more worthy things. But as of right now, as much as it sucks, this is what the game is. I don't want us to lag behind other schools more than we already do. That's why I pay a few bucks a month to the NIL collective. I'm not saying anyone should or shouldn't, but it is helpful if you do. It doesn't make perfect sense. It's not something that even people who pay into it support whole-heartedly. It's just the reality we're living in right now. That's all.

Fair enough. I'm liberated in that I feel ok spending my own money on this frivolous endeavor. For now.
You be you, Partner. I think that's great.

It might not work out the same for you, but I look at discretionary things a lot different at 73 than I did even 10 years ago, and much different than I did 20 years ago. I think that, when you see yourself in the fourth quarter with maybe eight minutes left (believe me, it sneaks up on you), priorities go in a different direction than earlier.

Very true. If he is lucky, he will experience that and really understand what you mean.
