This is a fascinating read about a could have happened rescue mission to save the crew if the problem had been identified before reentry. The mission would have been extremely difficult to pull off but if it had been it would be the greatest moment in space flight history.

Sounds like they got the better end of the deal. That would have been torture waiting that long for a rescue knowing that any one of thousands of variables would have killed them anyway.
