1976 Indiana Hoosiers closest game

It was their first conference game of the year at Ohio St. They won 66-64. I thought that was kind of ironic.

Nobody saw this Ole Miss game being close. Vegas had us favored by 23. Conference play is different. It's a grind, I don't care what the teams record is these SEC teams are going to give us everything they can. Most nights it won't matter but our team has got to learn you have to show up every game with energy and toughness. No one is going to give up if they fall behind early by double digits. They are going to fight even harder to keep from getting embarrassed. Our young guys looked a little shell-shocked most of the game. This should be an eye opener for all of them.

We took them to ot in Freedom Hall,I think the final was something like 83-78 or so

Nice find. We came out strong and really took it to them. Aaron was extremely hot. I think two things happened. Cal taking him out kinda changed the flow of the game. Booker didn't initially keep the up the scoring pace that Aaron started. 2nd we didn't handle their change to the zone very well. Lots of spacing issues, standing around and holding the ball to last few seconds of the shot clock before starting offensive play etc.

We are everyone's super bowl so we HAVE to expect this every single night. If we don't match the intensity we will drop 1 or 2 games that we shouldn't.

One side point, it is a coincidence not Irony though.

Your right, but they ended up winning 77-68. I googled that Indiana teams schedule and it just showed the score. It didn't show OT. So we took them to OT but lost by 9. I remember that game though I just thought it was in '77. Kent Benson made a shot at the end of regulation that was tipped straight up in the air and in dropped in as time expired. Cawood couldn't believe it.

I was lucky enough to somehow get a ticket to that game(ireally don't remember how I got it)The tip-in by Benson was more of an accident than anything else,the ball bounced off the rim hit his hand and went in(I can still see that play to this day)It was one of the best games I have ever seen,a couple of close calls that went against Larry Johnson really cost us dearly in that game

Horrible call during that game.....Kent Benson and James Lee both went up in the air to grab a loose ball.
Benson: 6'-11" 265 lbs??? Hell, he was at least 250, if not more
Lee: 6'-5" 220 lbs??? Maybe he was 220 at the time??? Maybe not.
Anyway. Both players crash to the floor.
Foul on Lee.
Joe B. went apes%#t, to say the least. He came flying off the bench, threw his program, yelling and screaming, waving his arms and being all animated.....uh, oh...technical foul.
It was great! Fired-up the team, and then some. We were down close to double digits at the time and made a comeback, and took the game into OT, where at that point it was all IU.
Ah, those were the days. Watched that game on a "delayed" basis.
Okay, maybe those WEREN'T the days after all !!!

I say it all the time....no matter the team in the SEC, we are dealing with high level D1 athletes who can ALL play. Couple that with the fact that we are basically a championship game for most of these programs and you have tight games. Underestimating any team we play is a mistake. Again, all these guys can play or they would be in a different league or division.

For Ole Miss it was almost like a pickup game. No pressure whatsoever. If Ole Miss is favored to win a game or a slight underdog, no way that one kid jacks up 25-footers. No way the team makes its first 16 free throws or whatever it was.

They came into Rupp Arena with everyone expecting them to get UCLA'd, and for the first three minutes that was happening. Then it's like a switch went off and they were like "screw it, we have nothing to lose". Same thing happened in the Buffalo and Columbia games.

We better get used to that.

Absolutely, and they know they can get embarrassed real quick if they don't bring their A+ game. Saying that, if we play with energy and toughness, especially on the defensive end, teams won't shoot like Ole Miss did last night. With our depth at just about every position we should automatically come out playing physical and get the opposing team to play the same way. The fouls should eventually hurt the other team before it starts to affect us. We just didn't play that tough for most of the game and their guards got on a roll. Moody, White, and Summers all made numerous shots with hands in their face. When Moody hit that floater that he through up high just to get it over WCS and then it kissed softly off the glass, I thought it may just be there night. Luckily he cramped up. The rim was 5 feet wide in his view last night.

My main hope for this team is that they never buy in to the idea that they are what the scoreboard says they are. By that I mean you see it all the time in sports where one team lays down its sword (UCLA, Kansas) allowing the other team to win by a huge margin. Inevitably the winning team goes forward to the next game thinking "we're so good we make other teams quit."

I think last night UK got up 12-0 on Ole Miss and figured "here we go again, another UCLA game." Only Ole Miss wasn't having it.

Indiana's 1975-76 undefeated team was voted the "best ever" and they beat a 6-20 Ohio State team by 2, and a 16-11 Purdue twice by 3 and by 4. Even for the "best ever" this kind of result is happened. UK goes on to go 40-0 and this will be a footnote to remember like the OSU game was for IU.
