One interesting bit about the book is that it reflected Orwell's perception of life in England in 1948. Swapping the last two digits came later.

If you care for Orwell, I think two of his other books are better reads. Homage to Catalonia and Down and Out in Paris and London. Homage to Catalonia is almost universally considered the best book about the Spanish Civil War. And his account of near-starvation as a young writer makes becoming a writer sound as wretched as it probably is.
