“Twelve men on the field!”

Zach Mills against Ohio State, where Coach set the record.

I had a wonderful father, just putting that out there.

Glad you feel that way. I feel that way about both of my parents, both are gone now but never to be forgotten.
I am passing on the way my parents treated me and my brother and sister to how I treat my step-son and daughter.

Remind me about twelve men on the field?

I too had a wonderful father. Unfortunately he had some significant health issues and died when I was in my early twenties... before I grew out of that young adult independence. So many things I missed out on. What I wouldn’t give to go fishing or watch a Penn State football game with him again.

My dad was a Purdue alum, but I have plenty of great memories of watching/attending Penn State games with him. The plays we saw together in person that stick out most:

- The pick-6 against Nebraska in 2002
- LJ’s run breaking 2000 yards against MSU, also in 2002
And the biggest:
- Ki-Jana’s opening play TD in the Rose Bowl. I believe I’ve told this one before on here… sitting right behind us was one of the most obnoxious opposing fans I’ve ever encountered: a manic Oregon Duck fanwoman wearing a sequined hat and repeatedly blowing a loud, foot-long wooden duck call in our ears. By kickoff we were already way past done with her. Right in the middle of Ki-Jana’s run, Dad turned around and gave her a boisterous, joyful “Duck you! Duck you!”

Miss ya, Dad! (Not due to the outcome of the Duck you or anything, lol… she eventually left about mid 2nd quarter.)

Yep, KU’s 6-3-3 D.

The game tapes revealed later that KU also used that D in the 3rd quarter.

That was my freshman year at KU. Born and raised in PA with my father a PSU letterman, I feared all that fall a KU-PSU matchup was developing. Yep…..and they were THE TWO BEST TEAMS in the country. They both would have beaten tOSU!

That KU Orange Bowl was my real introduction to football, I’ve never looked back.

KU had 12 men on the field for all 4 plays once we got inside the 5 yard line. Got the TD anyway on 4th down. The ref whose job was to count the players on D told Joe he counts them on every play, and we weren't even in the BIG yet!!!

Not for my dad, but for my uncle instead, he was a diehard Penn State fan. He went out and bought a VCR just to record the Fiesta Bowl back in 87. He was home to watch the game, but he just knew that it was something he was going to want to record and keep forever. So ‘interception giftopolous’ would have to be anyone in our families connection to him through Penn State.

we would regularly have Christmas dinner at their house, and more often than not that tape found its way back into the VCR after we had finished eating. He passed away last month and was buried with a Penn State hat on.

That Ohio State game was the last game I went to with my father. He never got back to another game as his health started to decline. A good memory

A great memory. That game was the last PSU game I watched with my dad, too, which is why it’s up there. My first and last PSU memories with the man.
