The Rugby Union World Cup starts Friday, September 18th in the UK. The tournament will feature 20 of the top rugby sides in the world, including the USA Eagles. Coverage of the opening game England vs Fiji will air on Universal Sports Friday at 2pm. Then USA's first round match against Samoa to air on Universal on Sunday at 7am.

If you've never watched the game of Rugby before this is a good chance to do so. It's fast, it's physical, it's exciting. They hit almost as hard as in American football, but they don't wear pads or helmets. Check out the Sunday match between USA and Samoa. USA has a real chance to win. And you'll get to see the biggest hitter in the world in USA's Samu Manoa. He's a huge man that hits hard on defense and is very difficult to bring down when he has the ball.

USA lost their opening round match with Samoa.

Next match is Sunday against Scotland. It's a must-win if USA has any hopes of making the playoffs. The first round major upset of Japan beating South Africa kinda turned pool B on it's ear, so it's still possible for USA to make some noise.

Go Eagles!

Was just in South Africa. They really take rugby seriously. All boys are required to play it in school unless you can find a doctor to write a note to get you out of it.

The upset by Japan was biggest in RWC history and dropped South Africa from 3rd to 6th in the world rankings. It was an amazing feat by Japan rugby team.

I love watching; just wish we were any good. I don't like seeing the USA get destroyed. I realize our best rugby-suited prospects wind up playing football, but we should still be better.

They're just past the halfway point of this tourney and there are few surprises. Top 2 spots in each of the four pools are all held by tier 1 teams. Biggest matches of note were Japan over South Africa, and an injury-depleted Wales team over England.

USA lost their last match badly to Scotland, giving up 5 tries (touchdowns) in the second half. Next up for USA is South Africa on October 7th. I'll watch, but I expect USA to lose by at least 20.

Host nation England will not make it to the playoff round. They lost today to The Wallabies of Australia by a score of 33-13.

Playoffs are set.

South Africa vs Wales
New Zealand vs France
Ireland vs Argentina
Australia vs Scotland

I'm predicting all four Southern Hemisphere teams advance to the semis. And predicting that New Zealand beats Australia for the Webb Ellis Cup.

Semi-finals are all set for this weekend. And just as I had guessed it is an all southern hemisphere semi-final.

Saturday, October 24 at 2:30pm on NBS it's the New Zealand All Blacks vs South Africa Springboks.

Sunday, October 25 at 11:30am on Universal Sports it's the Argentina Pumas vs Australia Wallabies.

Tough to get many Americans to watch since it's gonna air opposite american football. But if you want to see this sport played by the top 4 teams in the world you should set your DVR and watch it later.

Can you imagine a team in the U.S. being named the All Blacks?

I watched some of that game, pretty interesting. I bet them ol' boys are sore after a game. I'm gonna read up on some of the rules, I didn't understand one thing that was going on. Would be a fun game to watch if I understood it a little. Maybe I can find a Rugby for Dummies book.
