A few notes on this weekend's PA Districts for our guys:

Gibson actually somehow got the 3 seed. He'll still win, handily. 1 seed went to Penns Valley SR Colten Shunk, an uncommitted M2 guy. Going out on a limb and guessing someone with that last name is headed to PSU next year.

Weiss and Perry will both win Districts easily, probably bonus their way thru, and they'll be in the same regional next weekend. Both have less than challenging brackets. Perry's is particularly weak; he likely won't see the 2nd period this weekend.

Watson has a tough bracket. He's the 3 seed behind McCort freshman Melvin Miller and 2x regional champ Trent Hoover. He should still advance to SW AA Regionals next weekend.

PIAA postseason brackets can be found here: https://live.pa-wrestling.com

a lot of the 2/16 - 2/17 events have concluded, and the above post for that weekend is updated through a minute ago. So far:

120: Nate Desmond won PA Prep States, and is headed to the National Prep Wrestling Championships next weekend
126: Luke Lilledahl won PA Prep States, is headed to the National Prep Wrestling Championships next weekend
165: Will Henckel won the NJ/NY National Prep School Qualifier with a couple of crazy-quick pins, and is headed to the National Prep Wrestling Championships next weekend
190: Connor Mirasola won the WIAA D1 Sect D, and is headed to Wisconsin States next weekend
285: Cole Mirasola won the WIAA D1 Sect D, and is headed to Wisconsin States next weekend

Still contesting:
133: Mason Gibson is in to the semis at the PIAA Dist. VI AA tournament. The AA and the AAA Districts are being held at Altoona HS, with the result that nothing seems to be running quickly
139: Brock Weiss is in to the final at the PIAA Dist. 4/9 AAA tournament
139: Dalton Perry is in to the final at the PIAA Dist. VI AAA tournament. Same comment as mentioned above about Mason Gibson
152: Ty Watson is in to the semis at the PIAA Dist. VI AA tournament. Same comment as mentioned above about Mason Gibson
160: Asher Cunningham is in to the final at the PIAA Dist. VI AAA tournament. Same comment as mentioned above about Mason Gibson
165: Joe Sealey is in to the final at the PA Prep States. They started the finals at 4 pm; they haven't gotten to 165 yet.

I have to attend an event early this evening, so I'll update things a bit in the next 30 minutes or so, but after that won't be able to update results until late this evening.

All the competition for the weekend of 2/16 has been finished, and I've updated the above post for that weekend's competition with the results. Every PSU recruit won their respective tournament, except for Ty Watson (152) who finished 3rd in a really tough bracket (which @El_Jefe wrote about before the tournament) in the PIAA Dist. VI AA tournament.

I focused on posting the results, but don't have time to figure out what is the next competition for those competing in PIAA tournaments. I'll update that in a day or so. -- I've updated the results to include what the next PIAA tournament they'll be in

The post for "for competition on 2/22, 2/23 & 2/24" is updated for all competition that took place on Feb. 22 and Feb. 23. All PSU recruits in action advanced to the semifinals of their respective tournaments. I should be able to update it through the day on Feb. 24, but I have an event to attend Sat. evening, so I'll be slow to update for results from the evening.

2/24 Update -- The National Preps are completed, and all 4 of PSU's recruits won their championships. The rest of the PSU recruits in action have advanced to the respective finals. As noted in my earlier post, I have to attend an event this evening, so I may not get to post the final results until late tonight.

You guys should be able to watch the Dalton Perry - Brock Weiss match, and Asher Cunningham's match (both finals) for free:

EDIT: smh. They post that, and then appear to block the mat with the finals, but allow you to view a warm-up mat.

all matches for 2/24 have been updated in the above "for competition on 2/22, 2/23 & 2/24" thread.

PSU recruits won every match they had today, except for the one match where 2 PSU verbals faced each other in the PIAA North West AAA Regional @ 139. In a bit of an upset, #2 seed Brock Weiss defeated #1 seed Dalton Perry, 9-8.

PSU verbals accomplished:
- 4 National Prep Wrestling Championships (Nate Desmond, Luke Lilledahl, Joe Sealey, and Will Henckel)
- 2 Wisconsin Div. 1 State Championships (Connor Mirasola and Cole Mirasola)
- 1 New York Div. 1 State Championship (PJ Duke)
- 2 PIAA (Pennsylvania) North West AAA Regional Championships (Brock Weiss and Asher Cunningham)
- 1 PIAA (Pennsylvania) North West AAA Regional 2nd place (Dalton Perry)

I'll update the OP in the next day or two to include this weekend's results

The "post for competition on the weekend of 3/1, 3/2" thread is updated for all results on 3/1.

I have something on my schedule for a good chunk of 3/2, so I won't be able to update the results until the evening.

Thanks for posting Tom. That’s an impressive list of accomplishments. I have to say, I am a little surprised with the Weiss-Perry result. Desmond and Cunningham appear to have stepped up a level this year.

The "post for competition on the weekend of 3/1, 3/2" thread is updated for all results on 3/2.

Mason Gibson took 1st place @ 133 in the PIAA South West AA Regional.

Ty Watson took 3rd place @ 152 in the PIAA South West AA Regional.

I try to avoid posting about anything that doesn't involve a PSU Verbal in this thread, but I'll make an exception in this case. Jax Forest, beside being a target of PSU wrestling, may have won a silver medal at the 2022 U17 Worlds, and may have beaten the #1/#2 (depending on which ranking) ranked college 125 lber earlier this season in a College Open, but he was only ranked 3rd in the PIAA South West AA Regional @ 127. He steamrolled everyone he faced to get to the finals (bye, fall @ 1:04, TF @ 3:11, and fall @ 1:35). However, he was defeated in the Regional final by Chris Vargo (Bentworth), 13-7. (FWIW, Vargo, a senior, is headed to Edinboro.)

Returning to PSU Verbals, I've updated the OP to include this weekend's results. In the coming week, when the PIAA State Championship brackets are out, I'll update the OP to reflect the 1st round opponents for those PSU verbals that are in the PIAA States.

Vargo was a state finalist last year. In the past 2 years, his only AA losses were close decisions against state champ Cooper Hornack. So he's pretty good.

Still this was a major upset, and a reminder of how tough PA can be.

PIAA state brackets are out: https://live.pa-wrestling.com

Cael's guys:

Mason Gibson (SR, AA 133, SW-1, 44-5): Got the 4 seed as expected. Will get state #1 Brandt Harer (S2, NE-1, 50-0) in the semis. If he wins that, he will likely get state #2 Camden Baum in the finals. Harer and Baum both beat Gibson 3-1 this year. These 3 guys are the class of the weight.

Brock Weiss (SR, AAA 139, NW-1, 30-0): Got the 4 seed as expected. Will likely get S2 Maddox Shaw (SW-1, 39-3) in the semis. These are the 2 best wrestlers in the top half. In the bottom half ...

Dalton Perry (JR, AAA 139, NW-2, 31-3): Perry has more good wrestlers in his half, but nobody as good as Shaw. In the quarters, he'll get the winner between SC-1 Seamus Mack (34-2) vs. SW-3 Blake Reihner (45-4) -- both are returning medalists. In the semis, he'll get the winner between NE-1 Jack Campbell (33-6) vs. SW-2 Dominic Ferraro (37-5). Perry is the best wrestler in the bottom half, and should make the finals.

Ty Watson (SR, AA 152, SW-3, 35-5): Watson got a rough draw. He opens with state #5 Gage Wentzel (NE-2, 41-8), who IMO is a legit possible finalist. Win that and he gets Faith Christian's Max Stein (SE-1, 37-7) in the quarters. He is good enough to medal, but will likely need to do a lot of work in consis.

Asher Cunningham (JR, AAA 160, NW-1, 33-1): Got the 2 seed as expected. He is the best wrestler in the state and should reach the finals, where he'll likely get a rematch vs. Ohio State commit Nick Kunstek (NE-1, 39-2). Cunningham beat Kunstek 7-2 earlier this year. Kunstek first has to get past 2x state finalist Ryan Garvick (SC-1, 46-4) in the semis.

Coach Franklin's guy:

Caleb Brewer (SR, AA 285, SE-3, 39-6): Brewer got an extremely favorable draw and has an excellent chance of medaling. He is the only wrestler in his quarter of the bracket (including the 4 seed) with under 10 losses -- he should win his first 2 matches and reach the semis. If he loses one of them for some reason, there is only 1 guy in his consis path who might give him trouble before he makes the podium. He is unlikely to beat Effendian or S2 Morgan in the semis, but a top 6 finish would be a good way to cap his wrestling career.

Among the Not Yet PSU Commits:

Jax Forrest (SO, AA 127, SW-2, 49-2): Expect a rematch with SW-1 Chris Vargo (38-2) in the finals. All of the guys who might threaten Vargo ended up in Forrest's side, and primarily against each other until they get Forrest in the semis. None will threaten Forrest.

Bo Bassett (SO, AA 139, SW-1, 52-0): Got the 4 seed as expected. He will steamroll his way to the finals, where he'll get a rematch with S1 Cooper Hornack, who he pinned at regionals. Nobody else in this bracket is near either of them.

2 of them advanced to the Finals (Perry and Cunningham)

1 of them is in the Consolations, and advanced to the Consolation Semis (Gibson)

2 of them lost their 2nd match, and as such their States are over (Weiss and Watson). Weiss forfeited in the Consolations, but so far there's no info on why he did so. Watson lost 4-2, where he got a TD in the 1st period, but got reversed in the 2nd and then gave up 2 NF after the reversal.

In addition to Weiss and Gibson, several other returning state finalists lost this weekend, many by upset:
- Returning champ Gauge Botero lost in the quarters to fellow champ Louie Gill -- not an upset, Gill won their regular season match.
- Gill then lost in the semis to a freshman with 10 losses. Oof.
- Returning champ Kaedyn Williams got pinned in the first round, like Weiss on a defensive fall. (His opponent pulled another big upset in the semis and is now his school's first ever finalist.)
- Returning champ Chase Hornack lost in the quarters.
- Mason Ziegler (who lost to Cael Nasdeo in last year's finals) lost in the quarters.
- Hunter Hohman lost in the quarters.
- Nick Pavlechko lost in the semis to Dean Bechtold, who he beat 2x earlier this year including a pin.
- Andrew Binni lost in the semis -- though his opponent (Trey Wagner) was ranked #1 in the state a weight up before dropping for the postseason, and is favored in the finals.
- Cameron Milheim lost in the semis in SV to Melvin Miller, who was the pre-tourney favorite to win the weight.

Is it fair to say that both Gibson & Perry were held in higher regard, as recruits, earlier in their HS careers & have since seen their stars fade a little, or is that too harsh of a take? Of course, I'm not suggesting that finishing in the Top 4 in the state is somehow bad, but it's just not quite the dominant, Top 20-30 PfP recruits in the country, that they looked like a couple of years ago.

That might be a tad harsh on Perry. He's just a junior. Here's his results at PA States:

Fresh: 1st @ 126
Soph: 3rd @ 139 (in a really loaded bracket)
Junior: 2nd @ 139

This year (his junior year), he lost in SV to Maddox Shaw, who is a another good wrestler. I believe when he took 1st as a freshman, he was only the 50th kid in PA history to win as a freshman. He went through a bit of a growth spurt after that (not unexpected), and even for really good wrestlers that can cause some hiccups.

The other thing to consider is that he was, if I'm not mistaken, the youngest kid to ever verbal to PSU. He did so shortly after winning States as a freshman. Most of the guy's we get are juniors or seniors, with a longer track record of accomplishments. I'm sure Dalton would like to be a 3X PIAA Champ, but 1st, 3rd, 2nd, with one more year left, is nothing to sneeze about.

As for Gibson, he'll always have the asterisk of losing a lot of opportunities due to the 2-year PIAA ban on Bishop McCort. He certainly was elite a few years ago. He's a bit stocky, so there was some concern about him having to wrestle a weight or so above his optimum. And he hasn't grown much (height wise), so he's in a battle between weight and size. He's a really good wrestler, though I wouldn't put him at quite the same level as some of PSU's other recruits.

Last year Perry wrestled up a weight and still finished 3rd. His loss was 3-1 to now-2x state champ Kollin Rath, who will be top 10-ish in 2025 and is committed to Missouri. (Rath last year had an insane hit list, and this year beat fellow state chmp Collin Gaj multiple times. He's really, really good.)

This year Perry lost to Shaw 3-1. Shaw will be top 20 in 2025. Perry beat Shaw by the same score 2 years ago. So they're close.

Gibson definitely has a height/length challenge ahead. Shorter guys can succeed -- Frank Molinaro isn't exactly Manute Bol -- but Frank was much better on feet. Gibson is too dependent on shrugs and throw-bys, and when he does shoot, he doesn't finish cleanly enough, allowing opponents to tie up his legs.

IMO Gibson will be better off if he can reasonably get back down to 125. (And maybe he was at 133 to accommodate Forrest.) But either way he'll need more shots and better finishes.

Here are all of Duke's matches at NHSCAs last week. It's not a highlights reel, and not a long video.

NHSCAs is segregated by class, so Duke's entire bracket was 2025 kids. Because of that, it's easier than say Super 32 or Ironman or Powerade, but this was not a cake event: his Round 2 opponent (!) was 5th at PA states, and his finals opponent was 4th and 3rd at PA states the last 2 years. You wouldn't know it from the video -- hot knife thru butter.

He's gonna be scary in college -- especially if he does take the M2 Shirt next year.
