Appears the women went 1, 3, 4, 5, and 6 in the Spiked Shoe Invitational

On the men's side, PSU wasn't as successful (looking at the live stats). It appears that Syracuse dominated the race, and PSU's scorers placed 18, 20, 23, 24, and 27.

I thought the scorers would get adjusted, as there were some unattached runners in the race. The PSU scorers placed 14, 18, 20, 23, and 24.

The Syracuse guys were really hauling. It was a 5.2 mile race. Their scorers' placement, and the times, were:

1 -- 24:58.5
2 -- 24:59.9
3 -- 25:01.3
4 -- 25:03.9
5 -- 24:04.9

The Orangemen that finished 1st & 2nd were seniors. But after that, they were, by placement and year:

3 -- Fresh
4 -- Soph
5 -- Fresh

And it gets even more impressive (for Syracuse), when you consider that:

- the guy that finished 4th (pre-adjusted) in the race was running unattached but is from Syracuse
- the guy that finished 8th (pre-adjusted) in the race was a Jr., and didn't even count in the team score
- the guy that finished 9th (pre-adjusted) in the race was unattached but is from Syracuse
- the guy that finished 10th (pre-adjusted) in the race was a Sr., and didn't even count in the team score
- the guy that finished 11th (pre-adjusted) in the race was a Jr., and didn't even count in the team score
- the guy that finished 12th (pre-adjusted) in the race was a Fr., and didn't even count in the team score

Isaac Oppermann was PSU's top racer in the event. He had 9 guys from Syracuse, and 2 guys running unattached buy with Syracuse, (as well as 2 guys from Pitt) finish in front of him, on his home course.

Chris Fox (Martinsburg WV) is back as an assistant apparently. He is a pretty spectacular coach (or recruiter/recognizer of talent) so a lot of young folks tracks.

It’s early in the season so some coaches don’t want their runners going full out yet but some do. My son runs d1 and they were held back in the first race for half of the race then allowed to run harder in last mile. With that said Syracuse times were fast.

One thing to point out when looking at Oppermann versus the other Freshman Syracuse runners that finished ahead of him (Gabelman 3rd, Alford 6th, Danielson 12th) is those Syracuse runners are all redshirt Freshman. They all have had an extra year of college level training which is huge. In the case of the unattached runner, Ackley, who finished 4th he is 2 years removed from high school (graduated in 2023). Opperman is a true Freshman straight out of high school (graduated in 2025). In high school the races are no longer than 5,000 meters. This race was 8,400 meters. Yes, those Syracuse RS Freshman times are fast but those guys are not straight out of high school and have benefitted from a year in college.

Where does your son run D1?

Was watching the World championship women’s marathon yesterday and there was a big surprise third place finisher from Uruguay who was raised in Britain. When I did some background she ran for Psu in 2018/2019 before transferring to Arkansas. Don’t remember that at all, but I’ll take a small piece of that medal!
