Yes grunge may not happen without them
Black Hole Sun and Fell on Black Days are borderline rock classics. Halfway There and Keep It Off My Wave are not as well known but are also very good. If you are going to rank Seattle grunge bands, I would have them #3 behind Pearl Jam and Nirvana.Disagree. Alice In Chains predates Soundgarden who are maybe not even top ten for grunge bands. Cornell was charismatic and a wonderful singer, but their songs are forgettable - nearly everyone in Seattle did it better IMO.

I also prefer Audioslave, and I like Chris Cornell's solo work much more as well.If you’re gonna keep it to ‘Seattle Grunge Bands’, sure - maybe top three. But of the era? So many better bands. Outside of Superunknown, name another Soundgarden album of note - there just aren't any. I think to be in the RRHOF, you need to stand out - and they didn't to me. Black Hole Sun I think was popular because the video was so trippy. I will say I loved Audioslave and prefer them to Soundgarden. Not a hill I'll die on - if in, fine. Wish Cornell could have been there. But, so many other bands who should be in who aren't....including Joy Division/New Order....
I've seen both Audioslave and Soundgarden multiple times. Soundgarden is a band. Superunknown is one of the best albums of the 90's, and the records that came before and after are also incredible. Audioslave was like a dad-rock lovechild between the two great bands. IMO
Soundgarden and Outkast have both made completely genius albums and are more than worthy of inclusion, especially considering some of the trash that is already in. IMO
Bad Company? Bad Company is as dumb as dirt rock; just dumb. I could figure out their entire 1st album at 16yo after like 3 years of guitar playing. AC/DC can be kinda dumb too, but they brought the riffs.
Also, the Black Crowes are 1000 better than the White Stripes. IMO
That's right MDR. On my nerves with the anti-SG stuff.

I don't know any big time Soundgarden fans - Pumpkins, NIN, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, Nirvana (even Hole), STP, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, TOOL (how the f*ck are they not in - probably the most musically accomplished band of that era IMO), Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, REM, RHCP, RATM, Wilco, Foo Fighters, Faith No More - all better than Soundgarden IMO. I saw Cornell sing live solo and he was a massive talent. I just don't think the albums stand up to the level of their peers. I think Cornell tilts things a bunch since he's easily the best singer of that era.
Just my personal preference - I think musically, they were talented, but the songwriting just didn't do it for me. Spoon-Man!!![]()
All respected opinions from both of us. I was late to the SG game, after digging Nirvana and AIC and STP for a decade or so. Superunknown is a masterpiece and the only complaint I have is that the only really good vinyl version (Euro 320) is ***-expensive. The most recent reissue is too squashed. The CD is still king.
Badmotorfinger is also a stone-cold classic and Down on the Upside, while uneven, has a few of their best songs.
AIC was better
Nirvana, better but so much lost potential and so few great albums
STP are the kings and transcend the stupid ******** constantly spat at them for being multiplatinum geniuses who destroy crowds live
Rage - force of nature
RHCP - Blood Sugar is a masterpiece on par with SuperUnknown
Tool and radiohead are too intellectual for me, which is ironic
The rest not worth discussing
IMO!
Who today could/would qualify? I mean - there are some good rock bands out there, but they're so tough to find. The 90's were so fun because labels were so desperate to find the next Pearl Jam the f'ing Presidents of the United States got a record deal! And so many one hit wonders - Marcy Playground, Toadies, Sponge, Flys, and so many more.
I really do admire your high pop-culture IQ. I've purposely retreated from that for various reasons. So you're probably asking the wrong guy. The 90s was the last great music decade. In the last 20 years there's barely a decade worth of decent music to scrape up IMO. It's so sad and depressing to me, watching the lights go out.
In the last 20 years, bands that I dig
Queens of the Stone Age are the kings of the century and worthy of the crown
King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard - Grateful Dead ethos with useful OZ enthusiasm, love 'em
The Osees in all their (foul) forms - so innovative. So good at finding something simple and blowing it out. Although their last few albums have been a swoon compared to the few before those.
Mastodon made a few great records and fell off, and their genius ax-man just quit
The Sword was cool, they broke up
The guy from Maroon 5 is Darth Vader. He was supposed to save rock and roll, not destroy it. So horrible. MF can play, looked the part, could write. Panties may drop for him, but they drop for badass good music too. Rock and Roll is basically dead and we live in a post-rock society. This is evident in the pathetic **** we see on the news every day.
It's really Dave Grohl and Maybe Josh Homme keeping things going. Radiohead and Tool too but as noted, esoteric to many.
Anymore I struggle with contemporary male singers (unless rappers) - find them grating. Two current rock faves are Wet Leg and The Beaches and both have female leads. I'd add boygenius too noting they're more folksy/chill than hard rock.
Just my personal preference - I think musically, they were talented, but the songwriting just didn't do it for me. Spoon-Man!!![]()
I think we’ve had this discussion before, but I don’t like Cornell’s voice with Soundgarden. Too much screeching.I don't know any big time Soundgarden fans - Pumpkins, NIN, Jane's Addiction, Pearl Jam, Nirvana (even Hole), STP, Alice in Chains, Radiohead, TOOL (how the f*ck are they not in - probably the most musically accomplished band of that era IMO), Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, REM, RHCP, RATM, Wilco, Foo Fighters, Faith No More - all better than Soundgarden IMO.
