Please use the thread for all pre-session, in-session, and post-session discussion for the Session V of the 2026 NCAA Championships.

When:
March 21, 11:00 am EDT

Where:
Rocket Arena, Cleveland, OH

TV:
ESPNU

Video Streaming:
ESPN+. Please note that this is the only way to get access to multiple mats (They call it MatCast). As a heads up, MatCast will be available for each session (not all that necessary for Session VI on Saturday evening, as there is only one mat being used in that session. However, the Trophy Presentation at the end of Session VI will be on ESPN+, and not ESPN. You can subscribe to ESPN+ for $12.99 a month, and cancel your subscription in a week, and only pay for 1 month. To do so, go to:

https://support.espn.com/hc/en-us/articles/40375475974036-ESPN-Select-or-Unlimited-Plans-and-Prices

Audio Streaming:
The radio PBP, with Jeff Byers at the mic, will be streamed for free. The pre-Session portion of the broadcast will begin at 10:40 am EDT, with the actual PBP of the matches taking place at 11:00 pm EDT. You can access the audio stream at:

Team Scoring:
The best place to track the team scoring is the Penn State Wrestling Club web site. It appears that they have reverted back to prior practice, and are making the team race info available to all during the NCAAs. You can find their site at:

PBP:
@SlipperyPete will be available for PBP. I thought I might have a conflict, but I think I worked it out so that I'll be around for PBP if there are any PSU wrestlers competing at the same time. @GregPickel will be in the Rocket Arena, and providing his thoughts, observations, information, interviews, etc. from there. We always encourage others to provide their insight, analysis, reactions, and PBP if they so desire. As always, I remind you to please include the score for the match, or provide some context (wrestler, school, and weight class) beyond just "that's not a takedown."

Mat Assignments:
It also helps to give folks a heads up as to what mat a PSU wrestler will be wrestling on. You can usually get that info from Ironhead's audio PBP, from Penn State Wrestling's twitter account, or from TrackWrestling/FloArena. Anybody is welcome to post such info as it becomes available, as it will benefit all of us that are trying to watch the action on TV or via a video stream.

Penn State only has two wrestlers in Session V. And while we thought or were hoping that both of them would be in the finals, let's enjoy the wrestling, and have fun discussing their matches. Plus, PSU might lock up the team title during Session V, so that's something we can track.

PSU Scheduled Matches in Session V

133 Consolation Semi: #3 seed Marcus Blaze vs. #15 seed Tyler Knox (Stanford)

157 Consolation Semi: #1 seed P.J. Duke vs. #7 seed Kannon Webster (Illinois)

Blaze and Duke will have two matches. If they win their Consolation Semis, then they'll wrestle in the Consolation Final for 3rd place. If either of them lose, then they'll wrestle in the 5th Place match.

At this point, PSU and Oklahoma St. are the only teams still in the running for the team title.

PSU's max potential is 206
OSU's max potential is 159.5

Max potential assumes that every one of your wrestlers still alive win all their remaining matches, and pin their opponents -- something that is not happening (especially for teams with multiple wrestlers still alive).

Chasing the record breakdown

Penn state needs 24.5 pts to break their record of 177 tomorrow.

Consis: consi semis are the big ones. A win is worth 3.5 each +bonus for blaze and Duke first match tomorrow. Win or lose, their second match is worth 1 + bonus.

Finals are worth 4. If they both take third, no bonus, that gets us to 162, which means 4 of 6 champions with no bonus beats out the record at 178 team points

Bonus potential for both of these freshman, as well as Liledahl, Messenbrink and Barr. Maybe even SVN but Valencia is a tricky mofo.

Silver lining in Hawks likely surprise 4th-place finish: Renewed support for Brands in Iowa.
To paraphrase Colonel Jessup in A Few Good Men, “we want him on that wall, we need him on that wall!”
Jab aside, undercard respect to Arnold and Block, squeezing AA’s out of low seeds.
Anyone else get the feeling Duke may commit aggravated assault today?

I’m interested to see how Duke bounces back. I know it’s not normally an issue for Penn State guys recently but still.
Absolutely. As hard as it is at times to see these youngsters get so close to their goals only to hit a bunch in the road, it's a blast to watch them overcome that adversity and go back out there and let it rip...We will learn a lot about them in an hour. Duke has a tricky matchup he should win, but I'd never count kannon Webster out ( ask SVN). I expect to see blaze and duke wrestle much more free and dominate.

McGowan is pretty tough to score on; would not expect a high scoring bout with bonus.

I don't know what was up with McGowan in the PSU-Princeton dual meet a month ago (other than McGowan barely had any exposed skin due to the sheer number of bandages on), but I'm guessing the current version isn't the same guy who refused to engage and was DQ'd for stalling.
