The second day starts tonight at 11PM Central time.
61kg Jimmy Kennedy vs. Heorhi Kallyeu Belarus
65 kg Brent Metcalf vs. Park Seoungun, Korea
74kg Jordan Burroughs vs. Augusto Midana, Buinea Bisau
97kg Jake Varner vs. William Harth, Germany
I am calling it a 7-0 win for Varner in his first match. He was leading 7-0 with 19 seconds left when both mats went off the air. He had three takedowns and a penalty point and totally dominated his German opponent.
I hope they get the problems cleared up as ever since the feed went off in the Varner match they have had problems. The graphics say that 97 kg is still being completed but the wrestlers are clearly either 60 or 65 kg and the wrong names are up. They also buffer constantly so this could be a long night.
Kennedy scores a 10-0 tf over Hamka of INA in 1:49 of the first period. Looks like they have the technical problems fixed. Kennedy had two takedowns and three back exposures for the ten points.
Whew! Burroughs survived in his first round match with Midana from Guinea 4-3. Midana had the only takedown and Burroughs had a push out and a penalty point in the first to trail 2-2. He had two pushouts in the second period to win 4-3. He also was injured and his left leg was heavily wrapped although it did not appear to bother him much.
Metcalf had a 1st period 10-0 tf over Park of Korea. All four wrestlers win their first round matches. Burroughs is going to hae to look better than his first match to win again.
Metcalf loses 4-7 but much closer than the score. He was trailing 6-4 at 5:45. He shot in on a single, converted to a double and had his head in the lap of his opponent Kaya of Turkey but referee did not award the takedown and he lost the challenge so another point given to Kaya. This was Jordan Oliver/Logan Stieber all over again and I think Metcalf clear had the takedown. He had both legs locked up with head in the lap of Kaya who was sitting on his butt. I think Iowa has a right to gripe on this decision. This post was edited on 9/9 3:19 AM by oberebo
