Re-watched the game last night and wrote down every offensive play.

What I noticed is that there were only about 5 attempts to pass the ball down field and of those attempts, almost all of them were successful, with the exception of an obvious pass interference on the first series that wasn’t called, and one legit incompletion to Clifford.

I feel like both this year and last, everyone is writing Drew Allar excuses: “Everyone is covered.” “No separation.”

Were they, though? What, every single game, regardless of who the opponent is? I’m to believe that Penn State’s wide receivers are so awful, they’re incapable of getting open? Every opponent’s secondary is that good at pass coverage?

Let’s apply Occam’s Razor to this: is it easier to believe that every single game, the pass coverage is THAT good/wide receivers are that inept, OR… is Drew Allar too conservative with his release?

It seems to me that on the few occasions they threw the ball down field, they were able to get nice gains. Wallace had 2 catches that each went for about 24 yards. Warren had a big one on the final drive for 30.

You can’t wait for these guys to be standing alone no-man’s land. At a certain point, you have to throw the ball, and look for your guys to make a play, especially when the game is on the line.
That series where Drew ate those back to back sacks — I know some of you are going to say, ”Would you rather he throws a pick?” That’s fallacious thinking. You’re assuming a negative outcome. When he doesn’t throw the ball, there’s no chance for his teammates to make a play. You got a 5’11” corner on a 6’6” tight end— throw the ball!

Point being: I think a lot the offensive woes yesterday come down to Allar’s slow/reluctant decision making. Our WRs may not be great. We’re not sending Godwin, Dotson, Engram, and McDuffie out there. But you gotta put the ball in the air and trust your guys to make plays. You’re a 3.5 point underdog in your home stadium in front of the biggest crowd in history. Your head coach is 1-9 against this team and his only victory was due to a fluke play. No one expects you to win this game. You have nothing to lose! Throw the damn ball!
