This is either great news or terrible. We sucked *** from 3 last year. So this year we'll either suck more or the sucking won't matter as much.

Should spread the floor more. Don't know if it's good for NU, but should be good for the game.

I believe the sucking will not matter as much. When you move the line back as significantly as this, 3-point percentage will go down. This will hurt the good 3-point shooting teams more than NU, which will simply continue to suck.
Oh how I'd love to have a great long range shooter commit to the 'Cats.

Every shooter has that line where they are no longer reliable.....a foot out there makes a lot of difference. NU's distance shooters are bigger guys...AJ, Kopp, Beran, Nance...so it may not be horrible.

The argument to change it is b.s.: "will open the game up, reduce congestion to the hoop." Really? Go fork yourself.

The college game is amazing. They need to make officiating more consistent/better, make students take college classes, but that's about it.

Agree good for the game the college 3 has become too easy. Junior high kids can hit that shot nowadays. But not good for us because I think good shooters will adjust and mediocre shooters will struggle and we are more in the latter right now. Also I think we play by packing on the defensive side but that may be harder with more spacing hanging to guard out another 2 feet.

With the high school 3 now significantly shorter than the college 3, identifying truly good shooters will be more difficult. For the past few months I've been encouraging my son to take more "volleyball-line" shots instead of toeing the 19-9 line. The other good shooters his age in the area are doing the same thing.

My advice to your son would be to watch the Warriors games and study Curry. He's the best in the game and not a "volleyball line" guy

There was a thread about this some time back, but today it is official: the NCAA will adopt the International distance, moving from 20'9" to 22'1 3/4". Will be interesting to see how this affects the game, if at all.

It sounds like just the men's line is moving back. That means courts will have two three-point lines (men's and women's) like they did when the men's line first moved back to 20'9'' (maybe 6-7 years ago?). Occasionally you saw players get confused about which line to use.

Stephen who? It might surprise you to know that Curry takes plenty of shots from 28 feet and beyond (the NBA 3 line is just short of 24 feet). Time limitations prevent me from digging into more complete stats, but in 2015-2016 alone he was 50 of 104 from 28 feet and beyond.

My son's a freshy and currently is a little taller than Curry, and he certainly studies his shot, as well as that of Klay Thompson and others, frame by frame. At the high school line he can already accomplish the John Beilein 50-in-5 drill. "Volleyball line" is just shorthand for deeper 3s than the high school line.

I'm well aware of what Curry does from deep and have watched him many times. When you referenced the "volleyball line" I thought you meant a more flat line shot with little arc. Apparently what you really meant was that your son is practicing longer 3 point shots. As long as he continues to emulate Curry, he should be fine.

Curry practically invented the ‘volleyball line’ shot.

Weird.
And, as I now understand, the "volleyball line" shot is simply a long range "3" Many pro players, including some big guys like Kevin Durant, are very good at the shot, but Curry is clearly the best. Unfortunately, NU has nobody even remotely resembling the top 50 in the NBA, which was the point of the whole discussion in the first place.

I really enjoyed this article from a few months ago, on the acceleration of the three point shot in the NBA, and how that acceleration is seemingly increasing.

The most interesting chart is the one that shows how NBA players shoot effectively the same rate anywhere from 5 to 22 feet. Expected point value of a three pointer exceeds expected point value of any 2 point shot greater than 4 feet away up until 30 feet.

Find that volleyball line, gatito loquito.
