EVANSTON-Northwestern surged early and then pulled away late to grind out a tough 86-72 win over Eastern Washington.

On TV I heard the announcers say that EWU was picked (by conference coaches? reporters?) to be the number 7 team in the Big Sky Conference this year; if that is true, I would not want to be playing the other top 6 teams in the Big Sky. EWU looked pretty solid to me.

T-5th by the media, 7th by the coaches. And I agree with your assessment, but we'll know more when EW plays Texas, http://www.bigskyconf.com/news/2016/10/12/MBB_1012162614.aspx

Yeah, EW had a nice 1-2 punch at the forward spots w/ Bliznyuk and Wiley and frosh F Peatling wasn't bad either.

There were at least 4 times when an EW F was able to beat Pardon to the basket.

Bliznyuk is a player. He would be a legit scorer in the Big Ten. He was 3-5 from beyond the arc and could drive and get to the rim with an array of impressive spin moves. He was quicker than he looked, too.

As a voter in the Big Sky media poll, I can tell you that EWU always has talent (they won the conference and beat Indiana two years ago), they recruit foreign players heavily, and they are usually one of the best offensive teams in the league. I can also tell you they are almost always at the bottom of the conference in defense, typically live and die by the three, and will lose to lesser teams because they don't like to defend. I thought they looked pretty good Monday night, but I voted them fifth in the pre-season poll and I didn't see anything to change my opinion. (BTW, the Big Sky started the season 1-15 against D-1 opponents this year).
