6-7 record a recruiting tool?

While we all hated the 6-7 season, It seems to me that it could be used as a major recruiting tool. I can see the conversation play out something like "we were 6-7 but lost 4or 5 games in the last second. If we had one additional play maker like yourself we would have been in the running for the playoff". Am I wrong in believing last season can be turned into a recruiting asset?

You can use it to sell playing time for sure. "Hey, we really could have used you in this game at this point." It's plain to see there are chances for young guys to step in and play early.

Every organization needs a pitch. I think Riley's pitch about developing young men is a sound platform. Of course along the way, there is a value in using circumstances to bolster a platform and I think the "we were 6-7 and we need you" can accompany the developers pitch.

But ultimately Riley (nor anyone) wants to rely on "we were 6-7 so need you" as a core theme because that means you're out of work soon.

The 10-11 win teams seem to recruit pretty well..... Great coaches and staffs just recruit well, regardless of record.

We didn't seem to be able to sell the "success" pitch very well if at all (i.e. we just has Suh / Crick / you could be next) so maybe going the other way would bear some fruit :)

It seemed to work for Callahan after he went 5-7.

But overall, I think it's no surprise that our 2017 recruits so far play the positions coached by our best position coaches, while on the other hand we signed zero guys last year at the position of our worst coach. Like gw2kpro said, it was beyond disappointing that Bo and Carl couldn't sign any blue-chip DTs after Suh. Sounds like Riley is doing a much better job selling recruits on player development.

HEY! The Pelinguin brothers' phones are still blowing up with DT's telling them they want to play for them and be the next Suh!! Laughing That's why 3 years later Cameron Meredith at 260 pounds was playing D-Tackle! Biggest failure ever was them not getting a few stud DT's using Suh...

not sure about that. i think the #1 tool is opportunity to play. although, they dont seem to have let any of the 6-7 record get in the way of their efforts.

look forward to seeing the results after a +500 season. gbr.

Take a step back for a second and tell me if you've ever heard a recruit say something like this (when a new staff in): "I want to wait to see how they use players at my position..."

Two things a recruit wants to see is how they will be used (and you being able to show success with it) and a willingness to play younger players. You have to remember that most of these kids think that they are talented enough that as long as they are given a fair chance they will play. Telling a kid that if they just had one player (like you) they would have won more games runs the danger of coming off as we'll say anything we can to land you and we really aren't the best place to go if you want a program that maximizes the abilities of players at your position...and even if the kid doesn't think that initially some opposing coach will try to plant that in his head.

Now there is way to give a narrative that is similar to what you suggest but still a little different...we are installing a new culture and system...as you can tell, even with that we were right on the edge of truly breaking out...so the future is great here and as you can see from watching film of upperclassman X we are building our program around guys with skills like yours and need some young blood to take us to that next level....and oh...did we forget to mention that we had X number of freshman play last year? Yup, we are getting ready to win now so the best player sees the field period...
