I am a wrestling guy ... 12 years wrestling, 30 years coaching and blessed to be chosen for the NWHOF and I love to talk wrestling, especially Penn State wrestling. Before I found this place a few months back, I tried a few martial arts boards that had wrestling content as well. They were a cesspool. Racism, misogyny, antisemitism, homophobia, etc. ran rampant. The language and profanity would "make a sailor blush." You guys conduct yourself as adults, have a sense of humor and tolerate different viewpoints. Just wanted to know you are appreciated and thank you for letting an old boomer join the discussion!

Thanks everyone, I really enjoy reading everything and am starting to "decode" some of the expressions here. I am 75 and not in the best of health so I spend probably more time than I should online. 😉
Welcome to our message board! Can you tell us a little bit about your background? Are you a PA native or do you hail from another state?

I am from western West Virginia. I wrestled a bit in high school. I was just average or maybe slightly above. I was going premed in college so I did not pursue wrestling in college. Passed my MCAT and was ready to start med school. Vietnam happened. The draft lottery was not kind to me and I got a low number (16) Enlisted so I could pick my MOS And they were taking me one way or another. Did 20 months in country as a combat medic, finished my tour stateside. Used the GI bill to get a chemistry and biology degree. Taught biology and chemistry for 30+ years. Coached middle school most of my career and later high school. Became a Penn State fan when Ken Chertow set up his wrestling school in our little town (he's from here) and my sons (now 48 and 46 LOL) started wrestling as little guys and trained with Ken. Of course, he talked up Penn State all the time. Every year they did Ken's camp, Penn State camp, Russ Houk at Camp Maple Lake outside Williamsport and Lock Haven Intensive. we basically spent most of the summer for several years in PA wrestling camps. So I became a Penn State fan before they really became dominant. My younger son was the better of the two (older one lost interest but became a scratch golfer.) My youngest was offered a D2 scholarship but he was headed to med school too. He's an anesthesiologist in TN and my older one is a research geologist for a very large Canadian oil company (tells them where to drill.) I retired from teaching in 2007 and coaching with the 2010-2011 season on three straight state championships. I was inducted into the state chapter of the NWHOF in 2012. I am happily married for 54 years and have three grandkids. That's about all there is to tell!

As an aside, the Draft Lottery always seemed bonkers but I guess it’s “fair”. Imagine being of draft age and watching this on TV - worst draft ever!

Sounds like they didn’t do a great job mixing the dates in the shoe box (!) which was then dumped into a plastic cylinder for picking, so November and December numbers were picked inordinately early. That said, my birthday was November 10 and that would have drawn 282 - well past the 195 and under cutoff estimated to be the guys caught up in the draft. But my date was bracketed by 80 for 11/9 and 46 for 11/11.

Like the coach, I also dodged the draft by enlisting so I could choose my MOS and initial posting. I was then put into the delayed enlistment program to get a waiver. It seemed that I was a half inch too short to be an MP, but with a degree in Law Enforcement and Corrections, I was told that I was more qualified to be an MP than 99% of the officers in the Military Police. I went in as an E-2 because OCS was closed due to the winding down of the Vietnam War. The war officially ended the day after my discharge.

You're welcome. ;)

Yep. Watching them draw your life on an essentially a ping pong ball was a sphincter puckering experience for sure.

Aside from the wrestling knowledge residing on this forum, the snarkiness is unmatched.

There are some really sharp, quick witted people posting on this board 👍
