At the 2:35 mark they introduce the Orange Bowl Queen.... Katrina Hampel

January 1, 1970: Orange Bowl Queen Katrina Hampel (far right) and her court watch from near the stands. A native of Ann Arbor, Michigan, Hampel was a senior at the University of Miami. Penn State defeated Missouri 10-3. For the second consecutive year, the Nittany Lions finished undefeated but were passed over for the national championship. Texas was named national champion in the AP and UPI polls. The Reverend Billy Graham gave a pregame prayer.

Past Orange Bowl queens and princesses include local television news anchorwoman Jackie Nespral and actresses Victoria Principal and Deidre Hall.

Thanks for posting. I watched that game as a freshman home for Christmas break. Seven interceptions b y PSU. You watch that game and say "My God, how football has changed in the last 55 years. From television coverage to players' athleticism, how offenses are run, punting, size of players, etc., etc. But it was sure great to watch a game played January 1, 1970. Thanks again.

And when Nixon suggested a trophy for Psu, JoePa said "take your trophy and shove it". Finest reply EVER. lol
Not the way I remember it. I believe he said he didn't want anything that didn't say national champion.

I was at that game as a Penn State junior. The stat I remember most is that the Mizzou QB completed more passes to Penn State than to his own receivers. The game against Kansas the year before was actually more fun.

Thanks for posting this. It is the first time I have seen the whole game since I watched from the bleachers.

Dan Devine, the Missouri coach was asked if Penn State could beat Texas. His response was something like, "I don't know but Texas wouldn't have scored a touchdown"

Defense wins championships!!!

When we played Auburn in Tampa(forget the year) at a pep rally JoePa repeated what he said "take your trophy and shove it".

Random comments about the game and team
I forget where , but I remember Augie Weibel(?) holding court, and about every comment began, 'when I was coaching Charlie Pitman at Edmondson........'

I remember meeting George Landis while he was drinking beer and smoking cigarettes at a feverish pace, he was HC at Bloomsburg college. It was not until years later that I realized he started for that great '69 defense. You seem to forget the DB's

I loved Missouri's facemasks

Joe had his open side DE turn their back so they couldnt get cracked back on by the WR. in those days , anybody could hit you in the side within 3 yrs of the LOS . So they could come from outside in and blind side you , and it was legal. you couldnt block in the back though

That was one of the first things I saw on the defense. Thanks for explaining why. I didn’t know that.
