Roy Williams on ESPN green room talk: The most ridiculous freakin' thing I've ever seen

BY ANDREW CARTER
[email protected]

CHAPEL HILL
North Carolina coach Roy Williams is unhappy with ESPN, to put it mildly. In fact, his displeasure with the network that calls itself “the worldwide leader” inspired a quite the rant on Friday.

Here's the background: For a while now ESPN has hyped the best of the best college basketball players and promoted their NBA potential. The network did it when Andrew Wiggins was at Kansas and Jahlil Okafor at Duke, and certainly it's happening now with LSU's Ben Simmons.

More recently, though, during college games ESPN has broadcast the network has began describing various' players' “green room” potential – as in the NBA draft green room. The network has even promoted games referencing the green room. In case you were unaware, the green room is where the top prospects gather on draft night to wait to hear their names called.

The mere mention of “green room” in the context of a college game was enough to set Williams over the edge, and it inspired something of a diatribe on Friday. Take it away, Roy:

“I think ESPN is (an ACC) partner, and I've got to watch on TV where somebody's college basketball game and they're talking about the freaking green room? That's the most ridiculous thing. And that's one of my partners? That's half the damn broadcast: 'Well, so-and-so's in the green room.'

“And this is a great time for me to be saying something about it. Because they ain't mentioning any of my guys, OK. But God almighty, you're sitting there, you're trying to win championships, and here it is, January, and ESPN's talking about some green room and some Chad Ford or who it is and his (draft projections) – that's the most ridiculous thing we're having to put up with in college basketball.

“TV drives everything and again, hey, to all those other guys – get 'em, take 'em, go. They're not talking about any of my guys. But that's the reason why I feel more comfortable in saying something about it. But I mean, seriously, we're trying to win conference championships, we're saying college basketball means something.

“And here ESPN, one of our partners, and the only channel that works on my television – I'm going to guarantee you, guys, I don't know, y'all can tell me your favorite program. I don't know one program you're going to list. If it's not on ESPN, I don't watch it. And then I'm thinking – God almighty, I'm watching games last night.

“Green room? Damn, I was looking around, I saw Michigan State wearing some ugly green uniforms the other day and I thought, 'I thought Tom (Izzo) had a great deal of power.' He's got a whole green room now and then I realized they were talking about college players in the pro draft. We haven't even had the dadgum – ah, that's enough.

“That's the most ridiculous freaking thing I've ever seen. And put it in capital letters and send it to ESPN. And tell them if they want me to tell them privately what the crap I think of them, I'll do that. How'd we get on that?”

Steve Kirschner, the team spokesman who was sitting next to Williams, answered that one.

“Somebody asked a question about schedule,” Kirschner said.

That would have been me. And that question inspired another rant from Williams – one that devolved into his long take on the green room.

Imagine, if you will, Williams sitting at home, stretched out in the recliner, casually watching a college basketball broadcast on ESPN, the only channel that works on his TV.

All is well. And then all of a sudden they start talking about the green room.

Williams springs from his relaxed state. He squints his eyes at the TV and shakes his head. Did he just hear what he thought he heard?

The green room? THE GREEN ROOM?

Williams' “green room” rant on Friday sounded a bit similar to Jim Mora's famous “Playoffs!?” rant from way back when. Sub out “playoffs” for “green room” and you'll get the picture. Meanwhile, Williams just might crafting a note written entirely in capital letters to send to ESPN.

I heard all the millions piled up to fight the scandal in Chapel Hill is stacked in piles quite fittingly in a "GREEN" room!!! Hey Roy you're biting John Skipper's hand buddy! They are the network who gave Jason Capel (I know he's Jeff's little brother, but come on guys he's way below par on-air!) a job in-studio.

The thing thats so funny to me about Roy is his very much noting the point "they don't mention my guys." What a way of patting himself on the back for coaching like he has a group of overachievers....Oh he will get away w/it despite the ACC/ESPN connection just like Sylvia bumping an official when Coach P clocked her squad in Cameron Sunday....More Carolina Way garbage...I am HarttoChesson and yes Datt, " it was cathartic for me!" lol!

Hate to say this, but I agree with Roy. ESPN shows the games so I appreciate them for that, but this new "Green Room Guys" promotion is awful and needs to go. Roy killed me with "ESPN's talking about some green room and some Chad Ford or who it is and his (draft projections)..." College BBall commentary is turning into (1) bracketology and (2) NBA draft.

I didn't read it all but I don't disagree with him. I think it's kinda dumb the way they pump up not just a few but ALL of these guys now and continually talk about the draft and crap. College ball doesn't need to be geared completely toward that. To me college basketball isn't the NBA's mill or a big NBA tryout like it's becoming which scares me cuz I love the game

This would be a classic for the THR quote thread if we could figure out which one of the THR posters is HOF Coach Roy Williams. OFC

I actually agree with him that they shouldn't be talking about the draft during games but at the same time it almost sounds like the main reason that he's complaining about it is because they aren't talking about any UNC players

I think that's the biggest reason. Just wait until Sophmore Luke and Senior Meeks break out next year. Roy will be excited!!!

No one...and I mean no one!...holds on to highly-rated recruits longer than Roy. Duke only has 2 seniors on their entire team...scrubs included. unx? SIX! Heck , Roy has 4 juniors. FOUR! Duke only has 1. K has 4 freshmen compared to Roy's 2. OF COURSE , unx is a favorite to win it all. Gotta be one of the few ( if not the ONLY! ) team(s) with that many upper-classmen. The numbers become really damning when ya factor in player ratings outta high school. I'll try and find the stats again but suffice to say Roy has MORE highly-ranked recruits staying LONGER than anyone else. When unx fans ( and Roy ) say , "the scandal is hurting our recruiting" , well , they're partially correct. Sure , it hasn't helped. But what's really damaging is the reputation Roy's developed for hoarding talent. Why go to unx and play for a guy who places HIS interests above yours? Look , I'm not crazy about this "one-and-done world" but it is what it is. Roy's recruiting the exact same kids K and Cal are...he's just missing. It ain't all the scandal. It's Roy. Anyway , I could buy into his rant if it sounded more like a complaint and less like a defense.

The age restriction rule sucks. It's unconstitutional (kidding- sort of). A high school degree should be the only requirement to play pro ball. Forcing kids who aren't college material to pretend to be students just to get an extra year of exposure serves no purpose. The NBDL needs to offer special semi-lucrative 1 year contracts to worthy 18 year olds who don't want to go to college. Also, they should air those games, calling it the Rising Stars league.

This is a great idea in theory. It would definitely make the college game more genuine and in my opinion enjoyable. I'm just afraid that ESPN and other networks would lessen their coverage on the college game and all of a sudden start carrying NBDL games instead to showcase the next NBA stars.

Disagree here. I mostly could care less about the NBA. But, the NBA doesn't owe anything to any 18 year old kid or the NCAA. Nobody is forcing any kid to play college basketball. They could go to Europe or elsewhere. They could hire their own personal trainer and work out 24 hrs a day. Why would the NBDL offer them any kind of money if it wasn't reflected in ratings/admissions? If kids who don't want to go to college were so marketable, they would already be doing something else. Maybe they could hook up with Sonny Vacarro? I think the NBA is being smart and they have every right to do so. If I were the NBA, I would push for a min of 2 yrs.

Devil you can't justify your theory with this current crop of UNC players because there was only one, Marcus Page who was league ready last year or the year before and he has damaged himself by staying. Roy's fortunes have just worked themselves out with this current roster, especially Johnson. I agree with you on the last few teams before this current crop though.

IDK...I thought Jackson showed great NBA potential LAST YEAR. Lets face it, other freshman have shown less and made the jump-

Exactly. AND , we can't just cherry-pick. The fact is: Roy holds on to HIGHER rated recruits LONGER. If it was just one class ( or even two! ) maybe this could be viewed as an anomaly. It ain't. This is a pattern and it's the main reason Roy's missing on recruits. Is what it is.

I agree, it is smart for the NBA's bottom line to have the age rule, thus they will do it. I never said they owed it to anyone. I still think it puts top 50 kids in an awkward place, namely at the mercy of the NCAA somewhat. That's why the NBA should offer a stateside alternative to 1 and done, where the pay is OK, and the kids get some exposure. They should be looking out for their future employees. I'm not saying the current system is all bad, but it will inevitably lead to the kind of crap UNC was pulling. As it stands, cbb is an amateur athlete/nba rookie hybrid enterprise. The blurred lines are diluting the product.
